trying to combine antiviruses and firewalls
« on: February 16, 2014, 05:55 AM »
ps. For those looking for fine-granularity control, this combination firewall+antivirus looks very promising and is in the same class as Eset, Outpost, and Comodo: http://www.emsisoft.com/

I am not sure if can coexist with avast.
so trying the free version.
I will comment

I split this off into its own thread.. you are asking for trouble if you combine multiple resident firewalls and antiviruses.  You can combine NON-resident antivirus engines.

@Contro - +1 w/mouser! You can give yourself some major headaches doing that. :o  Most good antimalware utilities will check to see if another realtime scanner is active - and warn you about it. Pay close attention to any warnings, messages, or dialog boxes whenever setting up an AV or similar utility. This is not the sort of app you want to just "click-through" when installing. Especially since a screwed up installation of a security product can be difficult to disable or easily uninstall.

Some firewall programs can be combined with some AV programs, but you can't run two AVs along-side each other or two firewalls along-side each other. Also, one or both cannot be security suites.

However, even if you have a firewall-only program and an AV-only program, sometimes they will co-exist peacefully, but a lot of times they won't. Unless you have a really good reason for trying something like this you're best off just not messing with it. There's a lot of configuring & experimenting to get everything working properly.

Even if it appears everything is working fine something could be conflicting that's leaving your system unprotected.

Ejem. I tried deactivate avast, but i can't .
Now i don't have internet connection.....
i am trying to recover the properties of the area local connection.
only Microsoft net client appear.
so i click install
and as a miracle appear all the rest of the options. ....
So i have recovered internet connection.

The problem identified with outpost is that the service is not ready.
So i can't run

What can i do now ?

I have uninstall Outpost and seems all is back to normality.

So I would like antivirus compatible with Avast, and even with the firewall in team.

Do you know any explicit link ?

You already have an anti-virus program, how many do you actually want?

Just get a firewall, eg. the free version of Windows 8 Firewall Control.

It would be much easier, and less time consuming for everyone, if you just loaded a suite where all the components are coded to work with each other.

Otherwise, even if you find a combination of products that works together now, there's no guarantee they will continue to do so after the next upgrade. I ran into that myself a few years ago with Comodo and Avira. That combination always worked well for me - until one day it suddenly didn't.

Mixing realtime security apps is more trouble than it's worth - unless you're doing it for a school project. Or to satisfy your own curiosity.

Otherwise, install a decent all-in-one suite and be done with it.  8)

I have Avast free, but sometimes don't detect the virus like the last time.
I usually apply a weekly scan with malwarebytes antimalware.
And Spybot s&d and superantispyware.
Until the moment works.

I will take a look. But really i would like antivirus in coexistance only. I haven't a problem with windows firewall for years as long i remember.

Amen to that!

Sudden security software conflicts can cause catastrophic failures just as unpleasant as the malware you're trying to avoid.

Yeapssss.
But i insist in the partial point of view of Mouser - like i see of course- that the really dangerous situation is two residents antivirus suites. Or incompatibles in any case like i have lived a few days ago with avast and outpost security suite agnitum.....
