@2muchacid, @TUTRider: Welcome to DonationCoder.   :D

The author of this program, scancode, hasn't been very active lately so I'm not sure if you're going to see a timely response from him.  We're going to try to contact him off-forum.  However, if he doesn't reply, and based on this app's popularity, I can see about rewriting the application myself.

No problem,it is not a huge deal because I can keep using other programs to do what I want but to get this one working would be rad. Let me know if you need any more info and I can definitely get it for you.

Thanks!

That would be great!! Can you do it, please?

The error I get only happens when I select a folder with many sub folders and files, like 30.000+ files.
That's the only fix I need.

Thanks!

I contacted scancode and he said he's in the process of rewriting this application in C#.

Hi all.  Registered just to say thank you for this program.  I thought I was the only one in the world that would want something like this.  I did find a couple things, and I am hoping I am just not smart enough to figure out how to work the program properly.  Can I choose more than one location?  I have three different hard drives with movies on them, and I would like to truly randomize my choice.  Also, when I do a pick, it will only pick a file that is within a folder.  For example, on the root of my D Drive, I have 500 movies, I also have 500 movies in various folders on the same drive.  If I do a pick, it will only give me results within folders, none of the files on the root of the drive are ever selected.  Outside of those two, this program is great, and does a great job of letting me not have to make a choice what movie to put on at work...

Thank You!

Dude, thank you to the developer of this little program.  It was exactly what I was looking for...

And to answer the question as to WHAT on earth this could be used for:  I have a ton of emulator files for various gaming consoles (Sega, Nintendo, Playstation, etc) all in one folder with various subfolders for each corresponding system and the HUGE selection can be a bit overwhelming when just wanting to select a random game out of the lot.

So, I use the extensions "gb;n64;nes;bin;gg;sfc;smc" to randomly select a game from all consoles... or I can even narrow it down to a specific console.

Thank you for this.  This is extremely useful.

I just registered to say I was looking for a program like this to do something similar. I'm surprised that there is no demand for this purpose. My only real problem now is... unfortunately I have uncompressed all of my, let's say, games -for the sake of the above argument- to separate folders. Which means that I was looking for a program that picks random FOLDERS instead of files and my guess is that "pickme" cannot be used for folders as it is? Shame.

Nevertheless, I registered just to say thanks for this. I am not aware of similar programs (but if there are, please feel free to indicate them).

EDIT: As a workaround since I can't pick folders, I tried "exe;swf;msi;unity3d" in the file associations. I set a source directory of 1103 subfolders. The program keeps crashing with an error "5". I tried setting another folder to search (its parent directory) and got an error "6" (overflow), after it attempted to ignore the settings and instead scanned all of my drives!

First time in this forum so if I post this in the wrong plcae or anything, let me know.
I started using the program "PickMe" and it is great, only problem is I get an error message when it is going through my music. It goes through all the artists A-E just fine, and picks from them, but then throws this error. (A picture is attached to this post)
Can anyone tell me how to fix this error?
I am running W8 Pro, 64bit.
I loved this program on my Windows 7 computer, but once I got a Windows 8 computer I started having this problem - problem also continued when I upgraded to Windows 10.

Just leaving this here. I just need to implement drag-and-drop and globbing.

This'll run as-is on Windows, OSX and Linux.

Hey, I'm sorry to necro this thread, but I downloaded this program a few years back, sadly due to moving computers I have lost the program files. I would like to redownload it, however the download link has been overtaken by spam so I cannot redownload the program

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any solutions as I really enjoyed using this program

Thanks for posting, Gurg.  I tried the download link and agree it's now popping up lots of spam if you try to download it.  Scancode, the original author, comes around fairly regularly -- hopefully he'll see this and give us a fixed download asap.

In the meantime if anyone has their own copy of the program files I'd appreciate it if you could privately contact me about downloading them

Since there is an error -- "Run time error '6: Overflow" on Windows 10.
Its the VB's Shortcoming when it attempts to store/search too much data.

scancode post an demo video of v2 on Nov 2015, So I'm wondering the version 2 is really exist? :)

Or should we just try skwire's Scud? :-\

Downloadlink seems to be down, does anyone still have the zip? My harddrive containing pickme stopped working.
This really is a gem, still no alternatives that do it quite as well as this.

While this may not be quite as well polished as the original version. I wrote a small console utility that does the same thing.

It is purely commandline based.
Setting the root directory is done using the option "-d" followed by the root directory to search from (example -d "c:/familyphotos")
Extension filtering is done by "-e" followed by the extensions you want to include (for example -e "wav,ogg,mp3")
The amount of files for you to choose from is set with the "-t" option followed by an integer.
This changes the behavior slightly if higher than 10, as 10 cannot be input in a single character. So when selecting you have to hit enter as well.

This gif should illustrate: bac.gifDONE: Random (real random) file from folder and subfolders
