can any explorer alternative do this?

Look at Agent Ransack.  It does not continually index files, it searches on request, so if you would rather have something that eats cpu cycles and memory and disk space continuously then this may not be for you.

it looks impressive

but a search text field in every windows explorer (or other explorer) window is a must :/

Amazingly powerful explorer tool. It does all that you seem to require, and a lot more.

XYplorer has a very fast search - a bit more advanced than a box in the corner though!
But can also be used fairly simply...
