Check the jumpers on hard drive(If any)...Try Scandisk, that should give you some indication on the condition of the drive...If you have Scandisk on CD, boot up from CD if you have Stiffy boot up from removable or Stiffy...

Baseman, scandisk won't help much if the drive isn't even visible in BIOS  :-\

So I tried everything ... switching from cable select to master/slave configuration...

It might be worthwhile to buy an external HDD adapter. That way you could plug the drive in after windows boots. As long as windows recognizes something is plugged in you should be able to do data recovery on it.

FWIW: A friend of mine is using FileScavenger to get data back from corrupted hard disks (even ones Windows is not recognizing anymore).

Acronis isn't too great for file-based backups... but it's great for imaging. Genie Backup seems to be the best I've found for files.

Don't forget Iomega Automatic Backup Pro which you can download for free.

Direct download link here

It does imaging and file backups and has an ISO recovery disc image.

File backup is quite good and can run in th background. It includes file versioning too !

There is a Flash video tutorial at http://download.iome...tutorials/index.html

So here's an update on my problem, I hope someone can help me with it:

I got an identical IBM 80GB hard drive from ebay (however, different P/N and different MLC, but everything else is the same).  I switched the circuit boards and I plugged my old dead hard drive back in the machine.  It spins now!  However, the BIOS can't detect the drive.  So I tried everything, different IDE cables, switching from cable select to master/slave configuration, but the BIOS can't detect the drive.

could be the different firmware, see this:
My Dead Hard Drive story
If you find a good solution and become attached to it, the solution may become your next problem.

A Friend Just Recovered Lost Files With "Recover My Files"
« Reply #35 on: August 07, 2007, 09:47 AM »
I just wanted to post that a friend of mine did a quick format of a hard drive and then found out he needed to recover all of the documents that were on that drive. He tried a few programs and ended up purchasing "Recover My Files". He was able to successfully recover almost all of the lost files.

Thanks for that post Tinny. That's good information. I decided on that program a while ago too and it has served me well also.

Yup, add me to the list of RecoverMyfiles admirers. This has saved my bacon a number of times, and does a nice job of recovering photos from digital media in addition to the harddrive. It's not so good for CD's and DVD's, though, I rely on isobuster and CDRoller for those...

OK, my semi-profesional (or not :P) opinion...

If I am reading this right (I am somewhat in a hurry, I will re-read later to make sure I don't sound like an idiot ;D)
Your initial 80GB drive, although risky, MAY be recoverable via freezing it about 24-36 hours, then taking it out and quickly trying to get as much data off as possible. As soon as the drive warms up, it will die (for good), so get it FAST.

As far as switching circut boards, make sure the drives are 100% exactly the same, and try it again. Trying it in another computer may help also, make sure its the slave though (so you can boot & recover).

Just try to freeeze it, it HAS worked for people; either that, or try DriveSavers (the bill ranges from $200 for a failed recovery to, for 80 GB i think like $2000 max for a 100% full recovery, depending on the type of service (ex economy is the cheapest)).

Hope I was some help! :)
