spell checker in any text

(1/2) > >>

kalos:
hello

do you know any software that spell checks non-editable areas of text on screen (via OCR maybe?) ?

thanks!

MilesAhead:
Not a spell checker, but you can use my Selector program to conveniently paste text in an editor with a spell checker.  Yes, you can do the same thing "by hand" but Selector sits in the tray providing several types of interface between regular apps and the clipboard or selected text.

You may download Selector from this page:

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html#Selector

As example, I select a few lines from my hotkey page, hit the hotkey for Selector window to pop up, choose PsPad from the list of apps whose shortcuts I have added to the list via drag and drop, then hit the Paste button.

The clipboard text is saved as a temp file and opened in PsPad.  Press F7 to spell check.

I'm sure you can find dedicated clipboard based spelling tools.  Selector is for various tasks that kind of fall through the cracks.  Such as opening the url in the address bar of a browser in a different browser without using a plugin.  Launching any app with selected text as command line param etc..

The $30 Spell Check Anywhere can do it via hotkey or button on (almost?) all text areas, if the text first is marked (as text). Simple, but fine and easy to operate.

They also have a $60 Grammar Check Anywhere via http://www.spellcheckanywhere.com/grammar_check/grammar_check.asp

Not sure if this is what you want, but on the odd occasion when I want to do what you seem to want to be doing, I can use one of two methods:

1. OneNote's "Clip to OneNote": which can capture the area of the screen you select in its crosshairs, and copies it into a Note in OneNote, as an image/"picture".
If you have already set OneNote to scan all images for text, you then:

* Right-click the image to "Copy text from Picture" - that puts the OCR text into the clipboard.
* Paste (Ctrl-V) the text into OneNote or any other proggy which has a spellchecker
* Select spellcheck and run it on the text you've just pasted.

2. Use ABBY Screenshot Reader: which can capture the area of the screen you select in its crosshairs, scan it using OCR, and put any text it finds into the Clipboard.
You then:

* Paste (Ctrl-V) the text into any proggy which has a spellchecker
* Select spellcheck and run it on the text you've just pasted.

spellcheckanywhere.com does not seem to spell check the text that appears in the title of the window of your browser for example (that is not editable/selectable text)

onenote and abbyy are not convenient, because they are not instant (having to take screenshot and perfom ocr, is far from my need for on-the-fly spell check)

any other solution?
