CHS: Links to Review and Comments - Add yours
« on: June 25, 2006, 07:18 PM »
I want to start a thread for all of our application sections with pointers to review and software listing sites that accept reviews.

So users can visit to read more opinions about our programs, and most importantly so that our users can easily go and leave their comments for others to read.  If you like our programs, it's one of the best ways you can help - it let's people know the software is actually being used by real people who like it.

Some places where you can leave comments about CHS:

FileForum -> http://fileforum.bet...lpSpell/1132089051/1
Softpedia -> http://www.softpedia...ard-Help-Spell.shtml
Snapfiles -> http://www.snapfiles...l/clipboardhelp.html

Cnet/Download.com -> http://download.cnet...0432_4-10461541.html
"Clipboard Help and Spell is easily the most sophisticated and flexible tool we've yet seen for saving, searching, and storing Clipboard text entries. It serves well as a note-keeping application, too."

and if you know of other places please post.

Here's the link: http://www.download....2094_4-10461542.html

Is it (will it be) possible to rename, or nickname, a clipboard item?

If so, could you give consideration to providing a mechanism to print out the nickname and the contents of that item as a linked pair?

So, if #443267 went to the clipboad from, say, my editor
and its title became
'25/06/2006 (KEDIT for Windows)'

It's title could be changed to, say, 'Wine cellar entry code'

And a subsequent request to print (in special form) that entry would result in
Wine cellar entry code #443267

In a perfect world there would be a mechanism to print out the contents of an entire virtual folder in this format, in one operation.

Thanks for your attention.

you can absolutely change the titles of your clips, just select it and type in a new name in the title field.
you can also customize how clips get automatically named in the options.

as for printing a bunch of clips - very good idea, i will try to add it.

don't forget to check clips as your favorites if you want to keep them permanently, or move them into a permanent group or else they will autoamtically be moved to old clips and then recycled over time.

hmm we seem to be getting off topic here, but that's ok..
i see one other person has had this trouble when i do a google search.. i will try to search the code and see what could cause it - it sounds like it's trying to add a database item without setting a date for it.  that really shouldn't be possible but i'll see what can be found and hopefully have answer before monday.
in the meantime you could try deleting the files in the database directory and see if that fixes it.

I am constantly amazed at the abilities of Clipboard Help and Spell (Love Fest not intended, just my take).

There is one ability that should be "promoted" much more, and that is Character Count. At first there seems many utilities for this, however that's somewhat deceptive in that many are web page based methods (and others) require some scripting in the "not for novice" style.

Anyway; traffic in computer to mobile messaging is increasing (no citation); 160 characters is the usual max count; Ipod and some other '"smart" phones don't always have character counters: etc. Seems that some information targeted at these demographics would be in order.  As an aside, "GrandMa, Mom and Dad" text-ing their family's phones may be a growing source of users.

There are other utilities, but to propel Clipboard Help and Spell faster, possibly a focused view of this aspect of CHS is worth a try.

Lastly: The window showing character count results. Can it be sized smaller?  The reason I ask is that on this machine the "pop-in" that nearly fills the frame is unexpectedly large and to me distracting.

Hope this helps.  Cheers!
Nick

In truth, most Clipboard Help+Spell users probably won't scratch the surface of this complex and powerful beast. But even if you only use 10% of what it has to offer, you'll still end up with a more powerful and flexible, clipboard. Try it out.

Except they call SSC Snapshot Captor, though they get it right in the main review.

  I came across this in a PCWorld newsletter yesterday:

Free Clipboard Help+Spell adds a lot of power to your clipboard

On their own, X, C, and V are just three random letters. But combine them
with the Ctrl key, and you get one of the most iconic keystroke trios in the
history of computing. Cutting, copying, and pasting data is something we all
do on a daily basis, so doing it more efficiently can translate into major
time savings. Clipboard Help+Spell is a donationware utility by Mouser that
does just that. Note: The "Download Now" button below the full review and on
the Product Information page will download the software to your system.

Can you put the link in for us? Did PCWorld smash it into one of those infested installer packages or is it a direct link to here?

I've read good stuff about this program, but I can't seem to get it to work well.  It doesn't retain clips beyond a couple days, so of course any attempt to search passed clips is largely fruitless.  Disappointing.

Perhaps the free version is severely disabled. I don't know.

Surely the program works better than that, but I won't take the time to try to figure it out.  I'm using Ditto as my clipboard, which is also clunky in this area, but it works better "out of the box" than this highly touted Clipboard Help+Spell.

Hi RRider, thank you for taking the time to post.

Everyone has different desires from a clipboard tool and there are a lot of them out there -- so no reason you shouldn't keep searching until you find the perfect one for you.

Just a few quick comments:

First, the free version of CHS (like all of our apps) is not limited in any way -- there are no features disabled or restricted.

However, by default CHS is configured to "archive" clips after a certain number of days.  By this I mean that CHS originally puts new clips into the "New" group, but then moves them after a few days from the New to Old group, and then eventually from Old to Trash, and then eventually deleting from Trash).  The purpose here is to make it easier to locate more recent stuff.  NOTE: You can search ALL clips by selected the top "ALL" node.

In addition, CHS by default only show RECENT clips (from the last day or so by default) on the quick paste popup menu.

You can change both of these things.

You can change how often clips are moved from the "New" to the "Old" group in the "Backup/Maintenance" tab.  You can disable this feature completely if you like.

To change the default behavior that only shows recent clips on the quick paste pop-up menu, it's a bit trickier -- unnecessarily complex i would agree: On the menu window right click on the "Quick Paste" group, and choose "Edit this Group", then in the box next to SQL, you can DELETE the phrase "AND CreationDateTime > DateTimeMinusOneDay" or perhaps change it to "AND CreationDateTime > DateTimeMinusThirtyDays"

if you are going to use Clipboard Help+Spell,
it is best to go though the options and see what is possible (a lot). Different people are going to want different settings, so if you want a worthwhile app...

You mention ditto:
Ethervane Echo is based on & inspired by Ditto - I like it a lot, but it clashes with an ancient app I need for work, so I gave up on it. Not sure if it's being actively developed any more though.
