Open source vector graphics software?
« on: November 07, 2006, 05:52 PM »
What's the de facto open source vector graphics software?  Fill in the following analogy:

The Gimp : Photoshop

(blank) : Illustrator

Just thought I'd make it fun.
I came across something called Inkscape:
http://www.inkscape....php?css=css/base.css

Is that what I'm looking for or is there something better/more popular?

Thanks.

Well, since you've already found Inkscape, half the battle is already over. Let me help you with a few more...

XFig (just call him "Grandpa")
http://www-epb.lbl.gov/xfig/

SodiPodi (Inkscape's very nice Czechoslovakian cousin, who hasn't updated since '04 )
http://www.sodipodi.com/index.php3

Karbon14 (if you're using KDE, that is...)
http://www.koffice.org/karbon/

XaraXtreme (Xara's open source offspring)
http://www.xaraxtreme.org/

that oughta do it.

I've tried XaraXtreme and was very happy with it. I was able to use it for my needs, and i know absolutelly nothing about image editing. Very good software indeed.

this stuff is well talked about.. just google "gimp vs photoshop" and/or "x vs x vs x"

and yeah, the gimp owns. :]

popularity? lol.

you might want to check out paint.NET, which is not a bad free graphics editing app for Windoze.

I think InkScape is the best for SVG really, but that may be personal taste  :P
