DC Cool Sites List
« on: December 21, 2010, 10:28 AM »
I was just thinking that it would be cool if we could compile a list of sites (or things on the Internet) that are cool, educational, or simply "must sees". (No porn please.)

I think a few categories would be useful:

  • Entertainment
  • Educational
  • Useful
  • Political/Environmental/Social/Other

I'd probably rate sites only with a "MUST SEE" rating for exceptional sites.

Hopefully every few posts someone can collate them into 1 list for easy reference.

I'll start with a few I think are really good/great.

Educational
The Code Project
http://www.codeproject.com/

Educational *** MUST SEE
Wikipedia
http://www.wikipedia.com/

Entertainment
I Can Has Cheezburger
http://icanhascheezburger.com/

Entertainment
The Oatmeal
http://theoatmeal.com/

Entertainment
xkcd
http://xkcd.com/

Educational
Wikileaks
http://www.wikileaks.org/

Educational
Sugar: The Bitter Truth
http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Educational/Entertainment
George Carlin
http://tinyurl.com/27kwdp4

(He's simply too smart and too funny for anyone to miss.)

Educational/Entertainment
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
http://www.venganza.org/

(If you don't love pirates, you're going to Hell.)

Educational/Political/Social
Food Inc.
http://www.foodincmovie.com/

Anyways, that's a short list of a few sites and things that I would recommend to people.

I've obviously missed a lot there, but hopefully some people can help fill in some blanks with more top notch sites.

@Eóin
+100 --- Exactly the kind of recommendations I was hoping for!

I've never seen the first 2. The 3rd is an excellent site that I know well.

The Quiet Earth - early warning system for some of the
more thought provoking sci-fi, mystery, and post-apocalypse (mostly indie) films - whether in production, or out in limited release.

If your tastes run to non-mainstream, here's one good place to look.

About 70% of what they cover will primarily appeal to fans of the gore and splatter genres. Not exactly my cup of tea. But the remaining 30% is pure gold for those of us who don't live in cities with a big 'art' scene. (Thank goodness for Amazon's DVD store!)

Especially refreshing is their coverage of some of the 'new' directing talent from South and Central America. Northern and Eastern European and Australian studios also get their fair share of coverage

There's some truly amazing work coming out of places you never dreamt about if all you get on the screen where you live is Hollywood, Bollywood, and the predictable Cannes Festival art film.

This list is going to snowball, I imagine. Is there some standard way we could roll these bookmarks into downloadable files to be imported into browsers, to save a ton of paging and clicking?

For my 2 cents:

* News
newsmap.jp - the best at-a-glance news site I've found

Agreed, that thing is good. I was amazed to even see a listing for my country, which really surprised me. The results could do with better categorization (had some traffic breakdown stuff in the sports section) and better filtering (some items had times/dates in them somehow), but all in all it is awesome. Thanks! :)

If you need an explanation of why that is dumb, you could work in government.
