and just to get back to the original subject, I've always known this pocket as a 'fob' pocket which would lend credence to the watch theory...
Most times these days it's become somewhat vestigal and you would be lucky to fit some small change, let alone a watch

I use it to keep three or four quarters in, with which I sometimes treat myself to a drink from the softdrink machine in the lobby of the clinic where I work. So for me, it's a coin pocket.

These days, I mostly use it for coins too. Or small screws, keys or anything else that may fit in the "coin pocket". In my area of the USA, it does get some reference as a coin pocket.
