[Free VPN] VPN Steel
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:25 PM »
I have just recently come across a free VPN service called VPN Steel. You may find more info and get an account by going to http://www.vpnsteel.com. There's also a forum for it at http://www.vpnsteel.com/forum/index.php.

I stopped after signing up was a requirement. :( Dunno. It might be fantastic stuff, but the site looks a bit dodgy and confusing. Not sure what the free 1 Mbps is. Service? Sounds like a proxy.

1. Signing up is the only way to get an account for the VPN server and the forum.
2. The "free 1 Mbps (Megabytes per second)" is the speed that the VPN server goes at. So, if you're connection can normally go to 10-12 mb/s (Megabits per second) then it'll go that fast when connected to the VPN.
3. Its dodgy looking because English isn't the admin's native language.

Ok. I get it now. I originally thought it was a VPN that you installed on your server and your client (PC).

1Mbps is megabit/s, not megabyte/sec... so pretty slow (impressive for a free service, though).

But would I run through a free VPN with a website that looks a bit dodgy? Ummm... no. Single point of data sniffing, ohwauw.

1. Its going at 10-12 Mbps for me when I download a file using a download manager (such as IDM).

2. The admin of the site responded to me when asked about the website on the forum. He wrote that he'll change the template of the site and write some instructions on how to connect to the service.

My question is...why? Why a VPN service like this?

Try making an account for the website itself and ask him that question in the forums.

My question is...why? Why a VPN service like this?

I'm not sure either. I use Hamachi sometimes to play old (and some new) games via "LAN" and that works so well for me (and it's free) that I'm not sure how this one could be any better.

But then again, just because I don't have a use for it doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

Why would I make an account for a product forum I have no intent, or idea for an intent, of using? Can't you answer why? You recommended the product/service.

Well, you don't have to then. I'll make a post on its forum asking why its free.

What purpose does this service serve? Why would I want to use a VPN service?

For security.

My question is why would anyone use a free one?

Security? From what? So you can browse the web "anonymously"? Sorry, but in the digital age there is no such thing as being "anonymous".

Not entirely, no, but a VPN does offer a lot of concealing. You just have to be sure it's located somewhere that doesn't care about subpoenas, and that the service is run by people who aren't going to snoop on you. And then you have to be careful wrt. cookies, headers and whatnot.

Traffic is encrypted between you and the VPN, so all your ISP and routes on the way can see is that you're connecting to the VPN... from there on, your IP address doesn't leak.

Then the guy is either using the wrong abbreviation, or hasn't configured rate-limiting properly :)

Seriously.  I'll sign up for forums, I'll sign up for reservations, but I HATE signing up just to try a software or something.

A VPN connection isn't just "a piece of software" - you generally need an associated account, with username/password.

Well, since more than 300 users have joined the service, Its no longer free. At least he's allowing the people that already have an account to still be able to use it for free :).

Actually, its still free. The user just has to renew the 30 days after they're up.
