Looking for a portable document and info management tool

(1/3) > >>

AbteriX:
Hi Folks,

i am still searching for an tool to collect infos and documents.

It should be fully portable.
I don't like the all-in-one-databasefile thing anymore.
I like something like Scribble Papers => one file for each side (node?), but i don't like the proprietary name scheme of ScrbblePapers (Page0000163.scp)
Instead i would prefer that "Folders" inside the app refer to an real folder at the disk (in the app data folder)
and that the nodes in the app refer to real files on the disk (in the app data folder)
And if i add files to the app data folder i like to see them in the app later too, without importing them first.
I like to insert an link to DOC or XLS to the tree of the app too, so i have entries as plain text or RTF and links to other docs which open in the related app.

In other words:
- i like to have an folder at my disk with sub-folders and files
- i like an app which show me that structure like WinEx would do.
- as far as the app can do the app should show me documents (txt and rtf?) inside the app... or open the related default app for an doc

Right now i do this in TotalCommander by using Ctrl+Q and test several outliners... but i am still at the search.

Any ideas?  ;)  Then please share, thanks.

'Tabbles' looks interesting.
Watched some of the videos and downloaded this promo from Ashraf.

Free home version. no limits except you have 48 hours to get it.

Not sure if you can make the freebie portable, (NOTE: Only the installer version will work - the portable version is not part of this giveaway). But there is a portable version on Tabbles' site.
The trial 1000 file limited version.

Extract the downloaded setup executable with UniExtract, then extract the Tabbles.msi with UniExtract.

Run the Tabbles.exe program, select your language, click OK, enter the dotTech serial and Bob's your uncle.

I didn't take any notice of where it put the serial, (eg. %appdata%, .\ - doesn't appear to be in registry), but it ran without installing so it shouldn't be too hard to make it fully portable.  I'll have a look later today since it's now 0020.

I'd hardly call it portable though since it requires .NET v4.

tomos:
About the portable version they say

"can run from a USB stick/disk, tags files only on the support it runs from."
and
"Can tag only on the disk it runs from, no tabble sharing."

not 100% sure what that means - "Can tag only on the disk it runs from" -
is it that it can only tag on files the disc where the exe is?

I can't find an answer to that tomos.
Perhaps one could create a database and sync it.

Or using 4wd's method, sharing and tagging could be done with the usb stick and the desktop.

Any database, anywhere can be opened, but tagging seems restricted, perhaps for sharing security.

I'm really not sure if Tabbles is an answer anyway.
It's more of a find your file operation.
