is there any file manager that doesn't enforce sort order? I mean, if I reorder files by hand, it remember that config the next time I open it. preferrably for linux also :)

rjbull:
Total Commander has an unsorted mode, Ctrl-F7, if that's what you mean?

nope... doesn't let me rearrange items, AND remember their positions next time I open that folder. But thanks!

urlwolf - I don't think this works under linux and it no longer seems to be in development but Accelman does what you want.
(See also other previous posts here about Accelman.)

I use a workaround for this in Xplorer² by setting digits as comments and then using comments as the primary sort field and name as secondary. I mostly use this method to reorder folders and shortcuts (both of which accept comments) so it works.

Of course, not all file types will let you store comments, or you may just have too many files to make a manual approach feasible. Not exactly a universal solution... :)
