I just thought I'd post to let you know that I updated the initial post. There is now a playable version available for download. If for some reason you cannot unzip the file, it might be useful to know that I used 7-Zip to zip it. I think I used a compression algorithm that other zip programs (including Windows default zip app) would be compatible with.

MOUSER: ScreenShot Captor would only capture a blank screen. So I used Windows 7's Snipping Tool and saved it as a gif, which made the screenshot look like carp because of the dithering.

I just thought I'd mention that the current graphics are all temporary/programmer's art and will likely be replaced by other things. After all, it makes no sense for a tree to be jumping around. But I thought I'd explain that in the top left part of the screenshot is a block with a yellow circle in the middle. That's the goal you're trying to reach.

HELP NEEDED: I could use some graphics. I basically only need 4 or 5 images and they can be pretty simple, probably 64x64 at the largest for all except the background image:

  • Ground Tile: Right now this is the grass you stand on at the start (bottom) of the level.
  • Platform Tile: Right now these are the green blocks with brown outlines/cracks in them. There are 3 now for variation, but I really only need 1.
  • Player Image: Right now this is a tree. I'd like it to be a person or creature that would make sense to have jumping/hopping around.
  • Goal Tile: Right now this is the green block with a yellow circle in the middle. I'd like it to be something that signifies an exit or goal. Something that stands out from the platform blocks.
  • Background Image: This may be the hardest image to make, because I would like it to be very tall so that as the player climbs, the image will progress from sky and clouds etc., to maybe darkness and space and stars and galaxies, etc.

Maybe it should be Cody who is jumping around?

I'm not sure if you are looking for suggestions, but what if instead of blocks completely dissapearing or appearing after each move, blocks crumbled over the course of a few stages.. so that you had to plan your route to use blocks before they dissapeared.. with new ones appearing only at top of the screen as you move upward.

Those are both really good ideas! And if it's Cody jumping around, then the goal should be a pot of coins or something similar.

yeah put coins on every block for him to gather.. scatter $1 $5 $10 coins to dare him to try to get to places that might be risky.  some times he might even have to go high up and fall down to get them.

one thing -- it might be nice to use not random but predefined simple level data files, that way people can make actually tricky puzzles out of the levels.  just an idea.

I'm really not into video games but this thing is fun! I love the jump blind and hope there is something there other than a ceiling ... I've been laughing & swearing for last half hour. :)

maybe it's a zen commentary.. after all, only a creature who can't jump would dream of a world where every time you jump the universe rearranges itself.

You could be on to something there ... may when the tree makes it to the top it could land in some soil and finally be allowed to take root and bear fruit.

On the other hand I had been thinking it was a one legged snail with no head.

NANY Final Release is now up.

Changes:
  • Something special happens when you reach the goal.
  • Changed randomization to make it easier to jump. No more blocks appearing directly above your head.
  • Other various tweaks/fixes

I'd also like to say thanks for making the screencast for me. However the title of the game is spelled incorrectly on the YouTube page. Whoever is in charge of the YouTube account, will you please correct that for me? Thanks!

If I extract the zip file with the resulting folder living on my Desktop (non-English system), I get a dialog box w/ title:

  "Game Startup Error"

and content:

'initializeProject' function could not be found
This could indicate a bad or corrupt common directory for your game.

The Game will now shutdown because it cannot properly function

From elsewhere (say the root of some drive), it seems to be ok.

Somehow I found this most recent version harder...may be I just got lucky on earlier attempts :)

The game runs fine from me when putting the folder on my Desktop.

Could you attach your console.log file when you get this error? Just rename it to console.log.txt and you can attach it to your post.

I hope you don't mind that I doctored the file paths.  Sorry for the paranoia.

I don't mind.

It makes me wonder if it's the non-ascii directory names that are messing it up. Would you please try creating a non-ascii directory somewhere you have tried Leap of Faith that worked and test to see if it still works or not?

And I take it by the path tree that you're running Windows XP?

I haven't played Assassin's Creed, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Sure thing.

When I put the Leap of Faith folder at the top level of a drive it was fine.  When I created a folder with a non-ASCII name at the top of the same drive and put the Leap of Faith folder inside -- this setup led to the  dialog box indicating a problem.

And I take it by the path tree that you're running Windows XP?

That is correct.

Win7, 64bit: non-ascii is a problem here as well. Other than that, it works fine (it's not supposed to have sound, is it? :))

Assassin's Creed is very pretty, but the PC version is unbearably unstable - I had to give up playing it. Also, I suspect that it would have gotten rather repetitive... the fighting wasn't all that interesting, and some review I stumbled by a while ago mentioned that the game ended up feeling like a bit of a tech-demo with the main premise of "it's gotta have cool jumping and climbing!" :)

@Deozaan

It also creates a "Craven Entertainment" folder in \Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data. Please update uninstall instructions.

Thanks ewemoa and f0dder for testing the non-ASCII problem. Unfortunately I think that's a problem with the game engine I used and I have no idea how I'd fix that. But at least we know the problem and the workaround.

It also creates a "Craven Entertainment" folder in \Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data. Please update uninstall instructions.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I've updated the uninstall instructions.

Can anyone who is running Vista confirm that the directory I listed is correct? That's where the directory is created in Windows 7 but I'm not sure if Vista differs.
