SizeMe seems the closest to what I want so far, because I can use an external burning software (Nero).  But it's just the start of the evaluation...  Thanks !

Update on 2009-04-10 : I will definitely go with SizeMe, because of the possibility of drag'n'dropping the optimized structure to any DVD burning program.  Ignition, which I finally saw how to use, requires VSO's copy2DVD, not free.

Thanks all !

Here's a list of few more programs to sort a directory before burning to a cd/dvd:

Directory Splitter - http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Directory-Splitter.shtml

File Sift - http://www.charlesbrandt.com/filesift.html

CD Creator - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/cdcreator.cfm

HardLink - http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00Etbl

Mikessplitdir - http://www.cogit.net/apps/mikessplitdir.exe

Thanks for sharing this. The first 4 have a way of doing this that I like less than SizeMe : they move files or create hardlinks (a lesser problem). SizeMe doesn't change the structure to be burned.  I have yet to try the last one.

Xitsa:
Original hardlink hasn't been UNICODE-aware (and it is strange, because it was one little step to), so I slightly adjust it and put here.
It needs other VC's dlls than original: mfc71u.dll and msvcr71.dll.
