What is Twitter: A Funny Sarcastic Cartoon

If you've been resisting using twitter or are sick to death about every newscaster and politician on tv talking about it, this may bring a smile to your face:

from SuperNews! and http://www.neatorama.com/

there's lots of cool stuff about the idea of twitter.. it's just getting a little out of control in the press.. nice to see something like this to put things in perspective.

this link might work?
http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=b5Ff2X_3P_4

I was generally avoiding it - I mean even references to it
came across this intro somewhere (may have been somewhere here even) which helped me understand it - well, a little
Twitter is what you make it

I like Twitter because I can follow interesting people and celebs such as Darth Vader, Stephen Fry, and Christopher Walken. No spam. No ads. Not enough character rope to allow verbosity. And the tech people I follow can tip me toward stories I would never have thought to read because I don't have access to their knowledge, their inside contacts, etc.

If someone starts twittering about their breakfast, their medication, their cat phlegm, their anal temperature and crap, I just stop following them. No time for such nonsense. Thus the people I'm "following" are a small group, not minions.

I always wondered what happened to all those homeless people I used to see wandering around New York City - the ones that were always gesticulating and laughing and mumbling non sequiturs to invisible friends...

Now I know. :P

I can - sort of - understand why some music videos and such are blocked in individual countries (even though I don not agree with the idea). But blocking a thing like this? Bigtime weird :-s

Thanks mouser. The only downside is that the video really doesn't go in-depth with the flaws enough but yeah... BIG BIG smile over here.

So, umm... is twitter basically just facebook status messages on amphetamine and with even less content?

The reverse actually. More content, more linkbait, more rss-type messages, more memes, more noise, more everything. In fact the really popular ones don't use it for status messages. It's just the next generation of Digg minus the easy to understand commenting system but since Digg users rarely bother talking about something worth discussing anyways, it caught on.

Me? I'm more of a Plurk user. Problem is, there's too many flaws with these mediums and they won't scale. It's going to be like Digg probably. You're missing a lot of internet culture if you don't get in, especially with blog topic diversity dying down but at the same time, you're really just participating in an early culture. Kinda like the reverse-printing press. Lots of stupidity until someone actually uses the design and get it right and than maybe...*crosses fingers*...maybe there's hope for society just yet.

Fail whale is specific to Twitter. At least when I used to follow Twitter news. No idea if it went elsewhere already though. http://www.readwrite...f_the_fail_whale.php

Looked a heck of a lot like Moby Dick to me Cap'n.

thanks for the link, Paul. there was more to the whale than i thought.

Mody Dick does look related - adds another dimension to the failure part.

I think all the servers are US based so it'll be no good for watching say BBC vids from outside the UK though I'm sure there are other workarounds
