What's your mouse of choice?

Oh wait. Apologies app. When you were talking about scroll wheel feeling, I thought you were referring to a different model than the ergonomic one. Unless I'm mistaken, the reason it doesn't have bumps is because it's like a smaller scroll ball on the mouse right?

Something feeling like this if the size of the wheel was bigger and more exposed?

I really can't tell you if it does or doesn't feel like that as I have never used something like that.

Mine is most definitely a wheel and not a ball, though, and a normal sized wheel at that.

Oh, one more thing I should mention about the scrolling behavior of my mouse, because some may find it quite annoying...

Without the drivers installed in Windows, or with the software closed, this issue does not occur, and with the software loaded it only occurs in applications where the mouse wheel serves a different function than scrolling, mainly software like Paintshop Pro, Photoshop, and maybe some games, where scrolling is used for zooming. I can't say if the same thing happens with the Mac drivers, but it's definitely an issue in Windows.

I noticed the problem in Paintshop Pro, since that's what I have and use. Normal scroll mouse behavior allows you to zoom in/out on an image when you hover your mouse over it and hit your scroll wheel. It allows you to zoom in on specific areas of the image by shifting mouse position & zooming. This is great for working on very large, highly detailed images or pixel-by-pixel work.

But with my ergo mouse's software loaded, it won't zoom if you are hovering over the image...it tries to scroll up/down the image instead. The only way you can zoom is to place your mouse over the titlebar of the image when you turn your wheel, and that is not the same kind of zoom at all.

When working on very large images, I usually close the mouse software from the tray and restart it when I am finished. It's the only way to be able to use the zoom features properly, in Paintshop Pro.

So, this ergo mouse might not be the best choice for artists & gamers.

Edit: I updated the drivers and this fixes the zoom issue.

Microsoft Sidewinder X5. I got it for cheap with a cashback offer, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it. Also having a Sidewinder X6 Keyboard to go along with it.

As far as comfort goes, its quite decent. Its feels large initially, but once you get used to it, its alright.

I have a VX Nano and an MX Revolution; on both I have mapped the small button just behind the scroll wheel to the "middle click" function, which works fine for me. Yes, you can set the wheel to send a middle-click when pressed instead of the default clutch behavior (toggle from clicky to free-spinning), but as was pointed out, the button is just too hard to use that way... to me it feels like the click is too "deep"

Also, I wanted to point out to users of the MX Revolution (and a lot of other Logitech products), check out the so-called "uberOptions" which allow many additional functions to be assigned to each button.

In fact, I can't remember now, but maybe that software is required to get the middle-click function.

Paul Keith:
Thanks ayryq. I forgot about that app for Logitech mouses.

@app103

Hmm... I also haven't tried that mouse. I just assumed since it's a vertical mouse that the wheel would be much closer to a smaller ball so I used that image.

Oh well. Still thanks for all the details. I'm inching closer and closer to trying that mouse out but I don't think we have a local distributor here of that model so I can't request for a test copy but I'll try it as soon as it becames cheap enough. Any idea where to look for discounts on these kinds of mouses?

As I said, the newer model (v3 released in 2007) has detents on the wheel, so if you are looking for one without, you may have troubles as that model is discontinued (v2 released in 2004), except for the left-handed model is still available in v2 (there is no v3 for lefties yet).

It is an expensive mouse, and I received mine as a gift from a friend right before the v3 was released (he paid $65), otherwise I would probably never have owned one to be able to tell you about it.

If you want the left-handed model, Amazon.com has it available (only 1 left), and I suppose you can return it for a refund if you don't like it. Since it does take some getting used to, I would make sure wherever you get it from will allow you to use it for at least a week and still allow you to return it if you don't like it.

These are the 2 cheapest retailers I could find online, for both the right & left-handed v2 model:

Right-handed ($39.99) http://www.activeforever.com/p-2070-evoluent-vertical-ergonomic-mouse-2.aspx
Left-handed ($49.95) http://www.etech4sale.com/311007/evoluent-mouse-verticalmouse2-left-hand.html

I just updated the driver software for mine (just found out about the new drivers)

It's got some new tricks!

This might be of interest to you (accelerated scrolling - I am not sure I like it):

And it seems to now come with it's own built in Instant Boss:

And you can now set not only a general default button configuration, but also application specific configurations. This could be a real productivity booster if you set the extra buttons to perform commonly used actions in specific applications.

I set my general defaults to use them for copy & paste, so I don't have to take my hand off the mouse for ctrl+c/ctrl+v or right click & select from menu...much faster and easier to use the programmed buttons for this.

Edit: New drivers corrects the zoom issue I reported previously! Yay!  ;D
