I look at it all the time, and think to myself,
"gesh, i have so much work to be doing, but lets just look at a few of the 1200 news items i have yet to read"

on a more serious note, im sure im not the first to say, add blocker plus. it wouldnt be firefox without it!

Like in Opera, we can set up keyboard shortcuts in Firefox using keyconfig add-on. I wrote a small tutorial on the same at my blog. If interested, check it out by clicking on the screenshot below:
