How the Web Was Won: An Oral History of the Internet

(1/1)

mouser:
This is a long magazine article about the origin of the internet..

Fifty years ago, in response to the surprise Soviet launch of Sputnik, the U.S. military set up the Advanced Research Projects Agency. It would become the cradle of connectivity, spawning the era of Google and YouTube, of Amazon and Facebook, of the Drudge Report and the Obama campaign. Each breakthrough—network protocols, hypertext, the World Wide Web, the browser—inspired another as narrow-tied engineers, long-haired hackers, and other visionaries built the foundations for a world-changing technology. Keenan Mayo and Peter Newcomb let the people who made it happen tell the story.

jpfx:
seems like how USA won the web (though tim berners-lee does get a mention).

city_zen:
I've just finished reading this article (yeah, I know, talk about "I'll read it later"  ;D) and I found it very, very interesting. Thanks, mouser, that was an excellent read.
It is somewhat centered around the USA, but it can be forgiven since it was written by a couple of (I think) American journalists whose public is mostly American.
Anyway, in case you missed it when mouser posted it (and considering that before I made this post this it was buried in page 14 of the Living Room forum), I do recommend this article for anyone who wants to really learn how the Internet was created and how it developed

Stoic Joker:
Very interesting reading, thank you.
