I havent tried Essential PIM but can recommend Agenda At Once -
very user friendly,
todo list, schedule/calender and notes can all be clearly visible at one time

You also may want to look at Axosoft OnTime 2008.

It's not always obvious from the website but they give a free one developer license. I've used it since version 2005 and (for my needs) cannot find anything better. It stores its data in MSSQL 2005 (the express version is a free separate download and works great). You get the choice of a standalone Windows app, a web app or integrated into Visual Studio. I use the standalone version.
