The Ultimate Rescue CD

Hi there,

I would like to introduce you to something that I have been working on for quite some time. I call this the "Ultimate Rescue CD". I originally intended to keep this private for my own use but some of my friends wanted me to release the ISO. What's your opinion on this?

The background story: Why I created this? We already have a few boot CDs but none of them (in my own opinion) are really complete. So I decided to invest more time into linux and create my own boot CD with all the tools I will ever need. Have a look at the screenshots.

Will you be interested in having something like this and will you intend to test it? This is a critical decision as I am trying to find out whether people are interested or not. I am a bit reluctant to release it due to its size but if interest is shown I will go ahead with it. I am asking because the ISO is 595MB and uploading 595MB on my server might take some time. If this project goes ahead, I will need some servers to host the ISO. The project is consisted of open source software.

These are all included on the CD/ISO. What do you think?

Also, each of the big ones such as System Rescue CD etc, when you select the entry, another menu is shown with most of the options available to that CD.

As you can see most (in this case *all*) of the options of the original Live CD are available. I can either use VESA graphics for the menu or just the way it is.

I will label each entry as 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. so numbers can be used for shortcuts.

I am sure you would get a much better response from a wider audience. I suggest hosting this project on SourceForge.net and submitting your info to sites like DistroWatch.com and The LiveCD List.

I would also hope that you don't get discouraged by what will surely be a slow uptake of your distribution. Things take time to get noticed and for word to spread. It may take months for your distro to get moving. It is just part of the huge world of the intertubes. I think the best way to get people interested is to do a mini public relations/marketing campaign to get the word out and then be very helpful on the SourceForge message forums for your distro.

Let us know if/when you get it uploaded to SourceForge and I will take a look at it.

Also looking into the use of Bittorrent should help you with distribution. You can have a server hosting it but as more people download it there would be less slug on your server.

I'd certainly be interested in something like this for rescue, so keep us updated!

Hey thanks for those responses. I don't know if I can call my self a distribution but a live CD, yes. I like both of your suggestions. I will have to write a little shell script that fixes a small error in relation with Trinity otherwise all other sections seem to work perfectly.

P.S. My bandwidth is 20000MB on my server so by the time only a few people download this, my site will be down for a month. Sourceforge.net is a good idea.
