Outlook/firefox url problem

<< < (2/2)

MilesAhead:
You're welcome.  I don't use Outlook, but in my newsreaders they have a link to their respective support forums and I would get that "file not found" Windows dialog. Every time I reinstall Firefox it comes back.  I use this .reg script to get rid of it:

--- ---Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\shell\open\ddeexec]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTPS\shell\open\ddeexec]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxHTML\shell\open\ddeexec]

All it does is delete those ddeexec keys.  I wasn't sure if it was the same fix because there's another mozillazine article that I found originally, but it seems related.  Anyway, if you reinstall FF and stuff happens, that reg script might fix it.

FWIW, I felt spunky after fixing the problem so I installed Firefox 3.5 (was on 3.0.xx) and it did not cause the problem to reappear (so far!)

Some details:

* My problem occurred even when Firefox was already running
* I disabled all my toolbars, -that didn't fix it
* I disabled all my addons, -that didn't fix it
* I started it in safe mode - no joy
* What fixed it was following the instructions, from the Mozilla mag web page, to uncheck the DDE box for certain URL file types

I'd guess that your script does the same "unchecking" as the gui actions I performed...

MilesAhead:
Yeah, there was another Mozillazine article that had that script. I googled and couldn't find it, but got the link I posted instead. I've made a subfolder of my download folder just for those little registry fixes.  Got some for when explorer "forgets" folder settings in Vista, that type of stuff.  If you're on Vista or W7 there's a lot of good reg scripts in the Tutorials section on these sites:

http://www.sevenforums.com/

Also it's good to use ERUNT or make a restore point in case the registry gets a glitch.  I've yet to find a really cool registry editor that's free. :)
