add launcher "keywords" to farr?

(1/2) > >>

ottenm:
Apologies if this is spelled out somewhere and I missed it, but is there a way to create launcher-style keywords in FARR?  (like in keybreeze, launchy, slickrun, etc.).  I discovered FARR looking for a way to add folder searching to either Slickrun or Keybreeze, without creating a "keyword" for every file.  But FARR simply kicks ass, and just gets better with each time I pick up a new trick.  I'd like to ditch SlickRun and just use FARR for both searching and launching if there's a way to do it.

Thanks for any suggestions.  And for this awesome app.

Hi and welcome to DC!

I'm not sure if I understand your question...

FARR IS a launcher and will also search wherever you ask it too : options --> search folders.

There are also many many plugins for farr, and you can create special aliases -- keywords that will trigger special "features" or options, like searching the net with many search engines at once, etc.

There is also a help file with farr. Just click on the question mark.

Start with the BASIC USAGE page, and go on from there.

If there's anything else, don't hesitate to ask more questions. (Don't forget that there are tons of info in the forum too!)

The help file is definitely a good place to start, but I also think the basic answer to your question is YES, you can make "launcher-style keywords" if by that you mean alias. I suppose you're thinking something like: type 'np' will launch notepad? You can do that in FARR, but for simple launching of single executables I don't think it would be any faster, since after all often launched apps will be in the result list before you type anything and can be launched with a number key.

Hope that made sense... It did in my head :p

you absolutely can do this.
here's the easiest way:

first search for the file normally by typing its name, like: notepad.

now if you launch it once, it will get a high score and appear right away in your default list or as soon as you type anything like it.

BUT, if you want to create a special keyword for it, just right click on it and select "Add to Group Alias -> New Alias" and then type the name of the keyword you want to use as the group name, for example: np.

now when you type np up comes your notepad result.

You can also then:

* put more than one file under the NP keyword -- now you get a menu when you type np of your items to choose from
* customize the text that gets displayed for your item
FARR alias groups do everything that you can do with keywords for files, while also providing group menus, regular expression matches, etc.

How do you do this?
