[request] Hide Show desktop icons
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:22 PM »
I know you already have an app that kind of does this, but I want one that hides/shows on mouse over a little box on the desktop, not when my mouse is not on the desktop, like your current app.

Truth be told, I would love to take some time out and write it myself, but i have so little time coz of all my college coursework and my blog, plus im a tad lazy when it comes to learning new prog langs.

Are you still developing?
If not I may beat you to creating it. You never know

Anyone else like this idea?

I don't think I get it. Seems like clicking a tray icon would be just as much of an effort.

Try Iconoid. 0 effort!  :Thmbsup:

OK, mayb i failed to mention the fact that i have tried this and various other similar apps. After all, reviewing Freeware is what i do!
I found that the one you suggested, actually hid my desktop widgets along with the desktop icons. This is obviously not the effect i was going for. I contacted the author on this issue, but have not heard a reply.
I tried using the icon hide show app on here, and it worked, but just not when and where i wanted it to.
Maybe I should just take a few hours out to look and extract and edit the code to do what i want.

you could post in the Skrommels software board although he'd probably see it here..

Autohide Icons

Haven't tried it myself yet but it looks like it can hide desktop icons on mouse over.

I found that the one you suggested, actually hid my desktop widgets along with the desktop icons. This is obviously not the effect i was going for.

I've used Iconoid with AveDesk and Rainmeter. I've never seen this behaviour.

I use yahoo widgets.
How bizzar. maybe its because i set the widgets to "pin to desktop" but even so, I don't see why it does that.
If i right click on my desktop and then select hide icons, it works fine. I really just want a mouse over tray icon that does that.

I've got a tool that I wrote to handle this for me, you can download a copy here:
http://richie5um.fre...ads/DesktopTools.zip

Let me know if you like it.  You can find my email in the about box ( from the tray icon ).

You can show/hide the desktop icons by:
* LeftClicking on the TrayIcon
* RightClicking on the TrayIcon and selecting the Hide/Show Desktop Icons menu item
* Pressing CTRL+1

Errm, weird.  I tried the link from my previous post and it went straight to the freehostia main page.  Browsed to "http://richie5um.fre...hostia.com/Downloads", and it worked, and from there I could download the ZIP.  I then tried the link in my previous post and it worked fine.  Odd.

I've uploaded it to SkyDrive as well:
http://cid-4521d7dc0...ads/DesktopTools.zip

Hope it works this time.  If not, give me your email and I can send it that way.
