IDEA: BruteKill hotkey
« on: November 11, 2007, 02:32 AM »
My XP is getting more and more unstable, and The End is near, I am afraid. But meanwhile I would like to be able to still use it to some degree... Right now I am in the need of a hotkey version for the force / brutekill feature one can have in, say, jgpaiva's Shutdown, so I will be able to shutdown my computer even when the taskbar is unreachable and CPU usage is heavy. The hotkey must be editable.

Alt+F4 brings up the shut down menu. Then by pressing U you tell the machine to "Turn Off". R is for "Restart.

You could also create a shortcut on your desktop. E.g. Shutdown = shutdown -s -t 0 and Restart = shutdown -r -t 0
You could give it icons and/or assign hotkeys (right click ---> Properties)

That's easy!

F12::
Shutdown,13
That'll force shutdown your computer when you press F12 ;)

Alt+F4 brings up the shut down menu. Then ...

Thats one of the reasons I asked for the hotkey to be editable. Alt+F4 brute-kills the active window. I don't remember which program gave me this feature.

That's easy!

Well, jgpaiva, it was easy... to read!   ;D

What an earth are you talking about?  :-[  Where and how do I change settings for a F button? Or were you referring to Shutdown.exe ?? or..??? Forgive me for being such an ignorrant on IT.

BTW: Shouldn't it be 24 instead of 13 ? Its for emergency 100% CPU-usage situations.

Um... CTRL-ALT-DEL?  Why wouldn't that work for you?

It's not an editable hot-key, but if you want to fire up task manager or shut things down, there you go.

Thanks for trying, Ralf. Ctrl+Alt+Delete will of course eventual bring up Process Explorer, BUT I will then have to click "File" and wait forever for the what-do-you-call-it to roll down and give access to Shutdown, and THEN I will have to click Shutdown AND THEN wait forever and ever for some stupid box to appear and ask if I really want to shutdown. It is not posible when the CPU usage is 100% and everything is a mess. It is 100% imposible. So there I don't go.

Edit: I've found a brandnew emergency task manager: AntiFreeze, I will try out.

Hmmm... CTRL-ALT-DEL on my XP system brings up a dialog with a big shiny "Shutdown" button.  Yours doesn't do that?

Press the Win key + M to minimize all windows first and then Alt+F4. That should bring up the "Turn Off" dialog.

If that does not work for you, you may want to try 2 other methods:

- Win key + R key to open the run window. Type shutdown -s -t 00. (append a -f switch if some applications / processes won't let you shutdown).

- Ctrl+Esc key

The combination Win+M/Ctrl+M/Ctrl+Shift+M (etcetera) followed by Alt+F4 is suspended / elegal. But it doesn't really matter, because I have found ClickZap. [/IDEA]

LoL Curt.. I thought you knew about ahk.

Ok, i've compiled that script i posted before. Just run ShutdownNow.exe when your computer starts, and then when you press F12, the computer will auto-shutdown.
Careful, there is NO message, it just forces the shutdown.

[edit] i'm tremendously sorry for being an idiot [/edit]

Hmm... 1) There was no installation, so when I run the ShutdownNow.exe from Start, there is the usual security warning box asking if I want to execute this unknown program. It would be nice not to have to answer this question at every startup.

2) I guess the hotkey was taken, or something, because there is no action at all when I run the program or when I press the F12 hotkey - and there is no response to see in the task manager.

I don't know what to do with the ahk script, and of course >ShutdownNow: press hotkey< must be different from >Shutdown: db'click icon<, but you made Shutdown.exe work so nice and easy (and with an installer and all [Edit: No, "installer" cannot be the right word, but I don't have to understand anything to make it work])  so maybe you can make this one work just as smooth?

A very simple solution is to use Shutdown from http://www.rjlsoftwa...re/utility/shutdown/ which is a simpler command line than the one built into Windows.

All you need to do is copy the exe file you downloaded to a folder somewhere (say C:\SHUTDOWN)

Create a file using Notepad called MYSHUTDOWN.bat with a single line in it, something like:

C:\SHUTDOWN\SHUTDOWN.EXE 4 FORCE

and save the file in your C:\SHUTDOWN folder

In the command line 4 forces a system restart and the option FORCE parameter makes Windows shutdown and running tasks/processes that don't shutdown properly.

Now create a shortcut to your MYSHUTDOWN.BAT folder (it can be in the C:\SHUTDOWN folder if you like) and in the shortcut properties choose the shortcut key you want to use to execute the shortcut.

The file is easily editable and you can use any shortcut you like.

I have attached a zip file that has all this setup as described. Just unpack it to C:\SHUTDOWN

I have setup CTRL + ALT + END as the force restart key - the MYSHUTDOWN and the shorcut properties are easily editable.

On my XP box, Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up the win2k-style "Windows Security" box, that lets me lock computer, log off, shut down, change password, task manager, cancel.

<3 windows UI in classic mode... and there's a reason I haven't let process explorer "Options->Replace Task Manager" :)

Windows has an internal shut-down command.. Put a shortcut on the desktop and assign a shortcut key..

Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]
No argsDisplay this message (same as -?)
-iDisplay GUI interface, must be the first option
-lLog off (cannot be used with -m option)
        -sShutdown the computer
        -rShutdown and restart the computer
        -aAbort a system shutdown
        -m \\computernameRemote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xxSet timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
        -c "comment"Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-fForces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yyThe reason code for the shutdown
• u is the user code
• p is a planned shutdown code
• xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
• yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

some examples:
shutdown -s -f -t 10 -> shutdown forcefully in ten seconds
shutdown -a -> abort shutdown
