Living Room / Re: Opera 9.5
« Last post by yksyks on June 28, 2008, 05:42 AM »
Thanks for your replies. So it's just me. I tried to delete wand.dat file, but to no avail. Strange is that other forums work okay. Also, this problem appeared a couple of betas ago and then disappeared. I'll wait for the final release and give Opera one more chance with a clean install.

In the meantime I'm using IE7pro, which is approaching Opera's feature set and I'm coming closer to a conclusion that all those unique Opera's features are not worth the effort put in its maintenance and always updating and reinstalling.

PS: opera 9.51 RC2 is out!!

Thanks, but after installing this build I cannot log in to DC forum anymore. Time has come to leave Opera, I suppose...

Is it just me or do some of you have the same experience: since build 9.5 10071 and still in 10074 I sometimes cannot log in DC forum (it say the password is incorrect and works only on second or third attempt) and cannot post a reply (with time out error). I have to post this via IE7.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I've never been able to figure out how to change directories in ZTWin  :-[ :o :-\

Just press the Shift key as you type and you are immediately and incrementally put in the proper directory. The same works for files in the File View. Or, you can use the Spell search function (just enter the "|" character). I agree that not all those extremely powerful options are obvious at first, but generally it pays off to browse throughout the help file and learn some of those. You'll reach an extraordinary productivity!

General Software Discussion / Re: Install updates and shut down
« Last post by yksyks on June 25, 2008, 08:15 PM »
Lanux128 supplied probably the best link regarding this topic, thanks. Anyway, I didn't get it fully. There's an option described how to switch his feature off, but what happens then? Do I miss all similar updates? Or are they processed as others, i.e. requiring simple restart?

Stoic Joker: For people who never switch theirs PCs off it's not safer. In contrary, if you don't intentionally open the shutdown dialog, you'll never know such an update is waiting to be performed!

General Software Discussion / Install updates and shut down
« Last post by yksyks on June 23, 2008, 01:20 PM »
This started to appear some time ago among the listbox items on the Shutdown dialog. At first I thought it’s something pertaining to Vista, but appears on XP Pro as well now.

I’ve read some articles about this new “feature”, but does anyone know what the reason behind this is? Is it really necessary to physically turn off the PC instead of rebooting? I know it’s safer and sometimes necessary because of some peripherals that cannot be reset by software, but I absolutely hate three things:

  • I don’t know what’s this update and how do I get rid of it eventually.
  • It’s not installed and not even offered along other updates that require reboot.
  • It’s never notified anywhere, unlike other “regular” updates. Just now I realized that this appeared a week ago and as I didn’t have time to perform the operation, I forgot it completely. In the meantime I rebooted my PC twice, but this item silently resides in the Shutdown dialog. If it’s really so important, how do I know about it, when I never switch my PC off?

In fact I'm more upset by adults who are not using uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences or writing "I" as "i"... Sounds familiar?  :P

Robocopy can exclude files based on theirs size (and much more):

Thanks! So far so good. I should have added though that my cell phone place on the desktop took a wireless baby monitor...

I apologize for reviving this thread, but this morning made me laugh how my desktop changed during the past couple of weeks:

PowerDVD can do this up to 3x speed. Not a cheap one, though. (Using version 5, not sure about its successors.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Mikogo: share screen or access remote PC
« Last post by yksyks on May 10, 2008, 07:24 AM »
Thanks, Steffen. In the meantime I installed the same on my laptop with Vista and here it seems to be running well (but so far I didn't have a chance to test it on a real connection). On the XP machine (from where the screenshot was taken) I uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled, but the problem is always the same. If you need some more details, just let me know. (Skype 3.8.0.115 on both machines.)

No, it has nothing to do with calls. Look at the screenshot, it says Skype Extras Manager. Besides, I have a SkypeOut account, but no SkypeIn.

(Curt, by the way, congratulation to your 1800th post!)

General Software Discussion / Re: Equivalent to Foldershare?

You're right, it is expensive, but I'm going to give a free version of PowerFolder a try. It should be quite sufficient for my needs.

Any experiences with some of those equivalents? I'm asking because I'm just through with FolderShare--it missed some file changes and synchronized data the opposite direction, destroying some recent changes. (Fortunately FileHamster had a copy, but this was enough to mistrust and stop using FolderShare.)

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by yksyks on May 06, 2008, 11:03 AM »
Wow! I was getting afraid that I'm the only ZTreeWin user here! Good to hear I'm not alone. I can't imagine better and faster file manager, that's why I mentioned it throughout this forum every now and then.

For me ZTreeWin is not a memory, but a daily reality--you could hardly find my PC without at least one instance of it running, and I'm carrying it with me everywhere, otherwise I'd feel lost.

In fact I'm using LogMeIn for exactly the same purpose (helping my friends and relatives), which is an absolutely perfect and rock stable application and also for free, but this is more appropriate for people you're helping regularly, as they don't have to move a finger. I'm looking forward to this Skype Mikogo Extra for "one-shot cases", because it seems to be simpler to install on the remote side.

Thanks, Steffen. That was what I expected. For technical reasons I'm not going to downgrade my Skype installation, I'll wait for your solution instead. Fortunately, someone already posted the mentioned link on the Skype Extras site.

Just the Mikogo Skype Extra. According to the user guide it should be sufficient:
Before you start your first Mikogo Skype online meeting, please ensure that both the organizer and participants have already installed the Mikogo Skype Extra.
