General Software Discussion / Re: At last: MP3 Lossless!!!
« on: November 14, 2009, 07:54 AM »
If I wanted to hear a new CD, I would go into a shop in an actual building and put on a giant pair of headphones, or take a seat in their "listening room", and listen to that music in high fidelity sound. At high volumes!

That reminded me of the distinctly unpleasant experiences of going to preview a cd, like you, but so very often, some heavy-techno-metallic-crap would be blaring from speakers in the store so the sound permeated the earphones. So trying to listen to sensitive, subtle piano solos would be hideously interfered with by "musicians" substituting enthusiastic frenzy for skill. I am GLAD those days are past and my music can be a private affair. I'll settle for being able to hear a low quality sample with no background noise.

On another note, one of the positives of my descent into old age is that I have no need to pay a premium to buy frequencies I can't hear anymore. Nature has now blessed me with mp3 ears.

(Profuse apologies to all the techno-metallic-??? fans I've offended.  ;D)

Hi Nathan,
thanks for that! My (final year) high school students have just finished their final exams so this information is very topical at the moment here.

Renegade,
I think you are sadly astray in your perceptions of your new (temporary) home.
If we exclude Sydney, and perhaps melbourne, you'll immediately begin feeling better due to clean, fresh air, the feeling of spaciousness, the proximity to nature.
We admittedly do have creatures that we don't want to keep as pets (poisonous spiders and snakes, sharks, crocodiles) but these are much better than bears (and a lot of people I can think of)

Another good thing you may not have considered is that you'll be able to head straight for the beach if you hurry up and get here. Summer's started, temperatures up to round 108F this week where I am, so that makes the water feel GREAT. Also, its BARBIE WEATHER!!!! Great steak, great local wine - you can't go wrong.

With the plethora of outdoors, healthy stuff to do, you won't care whether you've got an adsl modem or a 300 bps acoustic coupler. Only thing you'll want to use the net for anyway is checking the weather forecast (is the weather going to be good or great) and for finding out what's on next weekend (what's the venue for the next international cricket match)
I hope I've reassured you and allayed some of your fears. If not, ask and I'll address your concerns.
tony
