Coding Snacks / Re: Global Hotkey Management
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:33 PM »
What I mean is that when a key is pressed a processes memory usage might shoot up or a window open... maybe these could be watched by supremely talented programs...
Those heuristics would be too uncertain to go by...

I know, but if you have to know the answer you might be tempted to try watching a process viewer like prcview or process-tamer (I haven't tried this one) and GUESS an answer. So the computer could make a more educated guess (I'm guessing).

Well I didn't need this, but I tried it; it works and it works well. A zero-byte download (for AHK users) that is transparently safe as opposed to the exe Coeluh plumped for. Leave the file on your desktop and you don't even need to make a shortcut! Go ahead Coeluh, try it. The AutoHotkey download is extremely reusable and flexible; I guarantee you'll need it for another purpose sooner or later.

Doesn't the Skrommel meister have a "gone in 60 seconds" type program with roughly this functionality?

Indeed -- and cleverly hidden away using invisible digital ink in one of my earlier posts in this thread the master's work is subtly alluded to ;)

That stuff works every-time doesn't it! Back to wearing my blind-man shades for me I think... 8)

Also check-out FileBox eXtender by Hyperionics.

Would it be possible as a programmer to "try a given hotkey" and see which programs/ processes "respond" to it? Something like FileMon but more like KeyMon?

I haven't tried it but there are two GUIs for the excellent JKDefrag one of which is ScanDefrag which also enables scheduling of ChkDisk among other things... but I'll try yours soonish...

Do you know of a free-source C++ compiler?

Check out the C++ Programming School section on this very website for freebies... C++ recommendations

I can't promise this will work for you, but I use Wizmo by Steve Gibson software at  http://grc.com. It is command-line but I wrote up a Qsel (Horst Schaefer program) menu for the most useful Wizmo commands and have a hotkey (Ctrl + Alt + W) on a windows shortcut for it.

The menu shortcut uses the wizmo parameters "quiet monoff"...

Ie you could use "path\wizmo.exe quiet monoff"

look at what i posted before you give me 3 paragraphs, please.
I'm sorry silekonn, but I too was puzzled by your first post (your flavour of English may not match ours) and I don't think app103 was out-of-line. He was after all trying to help you and went to the trouble of posting links which (as he hinted) was more than anyone else did, so you should go out of your way not to irritate him (or indeed anyone else!)

However, having checked the MSDN link out, it doesn't really seem to have any direct relevance, so I can see where you're coming from. app103 was that really the link you intended to post?

I know this is an OLD post but I'm interested to know if things have moved on since then. Are there other (maybe better programs) out there now? I think I'm after pretty much the same thing, and I can't believe there aren't many others (especially dial-up users) who save web pages en-masse for later off-line attention.

Stupid Question alert!!! Would a game demo do? It sounds like you're looking for a first-person shooter-type game demo. Maybe a games designer application/ SDK could be co-opted for this if you're not just looking for a good screensaver. Out of my league though.

It makes a ton of sense to me to be able to jump to the directory of a shortcut.
I didn't notice this bit before. We're discussing right clicking a windows' title-bar system-menu to access an option to open the folder containing the program to which the window belongs. Are you with me now...

89
Not sure what you mean. Start a program when A GIVEN folder is eventually opened? Or EVERY folder!!?

What about when you casually browse that folder (passing through from a subfolder even)? Or when you right-click a short-cut and select open or explore? What about if other file-managers are used?

I'm not saying I'll be able to help you, but by helping you to be more specific you might be more likely to get expert help from someone else here...

As for Vista, I don't have it and haven't played with it but I'm glad to know MS do occasionally come up with logical ideas and give us what we want!

Kamel, lanux128 posted a solution called CopyCap+LocateFolder.ahk about 3/4 of the way down Page 1 of this post. No changes are made to the "system menu" but the program uses another menu of it's own. I highly recommend it and shall donate to him shortly.
As you can tell from the above, my paltry but hotkey-enhanced version will take a few weeks (I guess) before I feel confident to post.

I'm going to try adjusting the scripts so that pressing CNTL and C -or double tapping C maybe -when the pointer is on the title-bar will copy the path of the app and pressing HOME will run the file-manager associated with folders.

Having now tried the script I am pleased how well it works and will post my customized version when it is ready.

:huh:Well, inevitably, I now have a few other jobs to do and it will be a while before I post this. I do hope nobody is holding his/her breath.

In case anyone still gives a hoot on this ol' (but good) post; I love DC (of course) which has stolen most of my attention from lurking on http://portablefreeware.com/forums/ and in particular the program entries and the comments on portability.

So am I now. Perhaps we can compare notes after I've posted my customizations...

Thanks guys: I haven't tried the scripts and downloads yet, but I'm going to try adjusting the scripts so that pressing CNTL and C -or double tapping C maybe -when the pointer is on the title-bar will copy the path of the app and pressing HOME will run the file-manager associated with folders.

The issue of middle-clicking and Ipoint can probably be solved by appending within  the MButton::{    } hotkey code block the command send {MButton} or words to that effect. This is working off the back of my head and I haven't read the code yet so it may need adjusting...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Having now tried the script I am pleased how well it works and will post my customized version when it is ready. Thanks all concerned especially of course lanux128 and the original authors of copycap. I should add though that lanux128 has provided an excellent script that does not really need too  much customizing, it's just that a) I'm sharpening my coding fangs and b) I prefer to use keyboard hotkeys.

this is one of those great simple ideas.

Yes, Mouser, that's why I thinkthat someone will have solved it before.

Macro Express might do what you want.

Thanks, AndyM. Unfortunately, Macro express seems to be an expensive equivalent of AutoHotkey. Sure it may be able to do it, but then so might AHK and so might Macro Scheduler that I was trying before -so why pay for the possibility of a solution when it may be AHK-solvable with the advantage of using less tools with less of a syntax learning curve? Unless you have experience of a greater (and more relevant) command set...?

No, I think AHK COULD be made to do the trick. I'm also sure that it will take me a while and that maybe someone here would relish the challenge -and may even have solved a similar problem before -hence my reasons for posting.

A simple question here: why the title? Do you mean touch as in toggle -untoggle?

Would using "Window Spy" or "Active Window Info" give you info on controls that you can use to script AutoHotkey to do what you want?
