I assumed the same thing as you did, mouser.  Anyway, I think it's better because in Directory Opus, you have the option of having it scan the size of each folder all the time, or by hovering your mouse over a folder for a moment.  In Xplorer2, you just hit a hotkey and it does it for you.  I like that more because this isn't a feature I tend to use very often, but when I do, I usually want to see the size of all the subfolders, and I don't want to hover my mouse over each item until it shows up, nor do I want to hunt through the huge options panel for it.

Living Room / Re: Review Day: Saturday -> Monday
« on: May 15, 2005, 02:33 AM »
I couldn't agree more.  It was tough to do so much of the work Friday evening and Saturday.  An extra day should be most helpful.

But I bet you're secretly running behind this week... =p

53
Yeah, Directory Opus has this, but to be honest, it's one of the things that Xplorer2 does better.

Slick shadow feature.  You may want to consider breaking up the preferences panel--it has a ton of options.  Maybe you could group them into two sections of related options?

Yes, but saving to JPG and then converting it to PNG is kind of pointless.   It would be like compressing a WAV into an MP3 and then decompressing the MP3 and compressing it to FLAC--the damage is already done.

It would have been great to have this for the review last week (if it would have had PNG support, that is).  At this point, I only have two suggestions.  1) Make the camera exposure sound optional and 2) stop teasing me with the option to save different formats and implement it. =p

ShellCity sent me to that.  Works very nicely for my large IP access database.

Well, I guess I was kind of derailing the topic.  Sorry about that.  Even if it doesn't solve the problem, it would be a neat addition.

Best Virtual Machine Tool / Re: A Gift from VMWare

Yeah, I know it has other uses, but I'm just too haphazard to think to use it first.  Besides, if I don't make some registry boo-boos and generate a couple stop errors every so often... I won't larn nuthin'.

I'll let you decide what to do with it.  If there was a 'next in line' for being active/supportive, then by all means.  I would also be cool with your giving it away as a coding snacks prize--the more encouragement to participate, the better.  I've wasted a number of hours with one of those little programs already, so I hope it'll be even more successful next time around.

I know that there are 3rd party ways to do this (srvany.exe), but maybe in an upcoming version, you could have an option in the installation to have it run as a service.  Might make it easier for everyone.

General Software Discussion / Re: Good video conversion app?

Yeah, getting VDub configured can be a pain.  It just takes some getting used to--I never went to any classes on it. :p  There are plenty of sites (two mentioned already) out there with a ton of info (tutorials, etc.) on using programs like VDub.  To be honest, I mostly use it to compress .vob files to XviD, and AutoGK does most of that for me.  Still, it's great for chopping/reassembling AVIs, producing screengrabs, dumping audio, and so on.

That's unbelievably generous.  Problem is, I'm not much of a coder and don't really have any use for this type of software, so I'd like my copy to go to someone else.  Mouser, would you mind just adding it into the remainder that you haven't decided upon yet.  I don't want something like this to go to waste, and it surely would on me.

To and from what formats?  VirtualDub(Mod) is pretty good...

Thunderbird has been my favorite for quite some time now.  If nothing else, I think it should definitely earn the open-source award.

Thunderbird should pretty much own outlook express.  Matter of fact, I switched to thunderbird after getting irritated with OE.

66
I'm not particularly impressed with this guide.  They didn't mention WinRAR at all and their review of Directory Opus was for version 6.2, but the current version is 8.1.

I have an in-depth how-to for BPFTP Server with some images I made.  I'd be happy for you to mirror it here if you like.

68
I have very little interest in programs that offer no GUI, and I have a feeling the average user will feel the same.  If someone else wants to muck through text config files and offer their opinion, feel free.  If nothing else, we could always link to the post from the review.

mouser: That makes me wonder about Blackmoon.  I'll keep my notes about it thus far to myself, but suffice it to say, it's not a front-runner.  I'll look into Titan--the screenshot reminds me of Gene6, though.

vegas: I'll look into Typsoft's offering.  FileZilla was okay for freeware, and may be all that some people really need.

70
Well, if you want me to list my system tray stuff...

Cacheman, M-Audio Revolution toolkit, Outpost Firewall, Gmail Notifier, Minimizer-XP, Feedreader, BRS WebWeaver, Directory Opus, BPFTP Server, CLCL, Ghost It, Process Tamer, DoubleClickQuote, Gaim, Azureus, Samurize, CPUIdle, AntiVir, AllSnap, AudioSliders, SpeedFan, and Netlimiter.

71
Hmm... I tend to close programs that aren't performing a task in the background when I'm not actively using them.  Still, I'd have to say that Firefox and Foobar2000 stay open the most on this machine.

72
FileZilla Server is officially out of the running as far as I'm concerned.  It's a good freeware alternative, but it doesn't hold a candle to BPFTP Server as far as options go.  I'll start looking into the others ASAP.

Edit: GlobalScape wants me to talk to a sales rep about features and crap before allowing me to download a trial.    To be honest, I don't want to do that and I really doubt our audience is going to want to deal with that.  So, unless I hear differently from someone here about finding a trial version of GlobalScape Secure FTP Server, it's out of the running.  Next up is BlackMoon.

Best FTP Server / Re: 5/7/05 - ftp servers?
« on: May 03, 2005, 07:38 PM »
Sure.  Let's see if we can nominate, say, a top 5 for me to pay particular attention to.  Unless I see anything better, BPFTP Server will win, so pick some good ones.  I'd like to start working with them as soon as possible, and I won't have to work again until Friday.  The first one I'm going to look at is FileZilla Server.

Ah, very nice plugin.  Takes a while, but the compression ratio is worth it.  Thanks for the heads-up mouser.

General Software Discussion / Re: RSS Reader?
« on: May 01, 2005, 12:26 AM »
I also use Feedreader, and I'm reasonably happy with it.  An RSS reader isn't something I'm willing to pay for though, so FeedDemon is out of the question for me.  SharpReader looks better anyway, to be honest...
