General Software Discussion / Re: Nasty NTFS issue ?
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:56 PM »
does the chkdsk at boot seem to do anything .... usually it write some messages to the screen while running.

Perhaps a windows repair from CD might correct whatever chkdsk changed.

Two more things I recommend if u have the time.

1) go thru the OPTIONS/various SETTINGS thoroughly and you will get a better idea of what you can do.  I had to go thru a minimum of 3 times to start grasping it all.

2) read thru the HELP including the commands section. This too can be intensive. Again I had to go thru 3 or 4 times to start comprehending it all.

28
well, you can get many good ideas on the dopus forum itself ... it is a busy forum with about 2 people (admin) answering questions regularly .. I highly recommend taking a peek at it from time to time particularly for new users.

It offers excellent support.

Opera's extensions are much like chromes'... whcih in my view aren't significantly better and neither will proably ever be able to do what Firefox extensions do.

Opera is however higthly customizable with the INI interfaces although you need to learn how to use this feature. I also like opera because it supports email and IRC all together in one program.

Opera has recently started work on a 64 bit browser which I have tried and from my experience is very fast.

30
Ifyou're saying that 32bit drivers exist for some of your device for win 7 but not 64 bit, then I would go with win7 32 bit or wait to get a newer PC.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ccleaner settings Windows
« on: November 17, 2011, 08:00 AM »
I would only bother if you have some indication is has been corrupted ... You can delete it; but it will just be recreated. This will actually slow down your machine while that takes place.

There are defaults set. I would only override those that I was pretty sure what they do. particularly windows/system settings.

I use JSHOT and like it ... several plugins for upload to various servers inclding minus and dropbox and picassa.

Uses java and works on mac and linux too in addition to windows

General Software Discussion / Re: Mac OS Lion opinions
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:20 AM »
The link mentions the fact that the install APP self-deletes after install with no prior mention AFAIK that this is what would happen.  I should add that to my disappointments too.

Luckily I cloned my drive after the download but before the install so I had a backup.  :D

I found a post on how to burn it to DVD, which I did using one of the files within the APP install "file". I also copied it back to my primary boot drive so that the next time I clone, I will have it on my hard drive too.

General Software Discussion / Mac OS Lion opinions
« on: July 24, 2011, 08:00 AM »
I installed Lion the first day available and am still waiting for articles on it thru my RSS feeds ... surprisingly, I have gotten just 1 so far.

I am giving the natural scroll gesture feature a try, at least for the moment , where scroll-down = gesture-up.

I do not like the fact that scroll bars are missing until u start a gesture to begin with.

The new ability to change the window size from the sides as in windows seems a good feature, but in max mode it can sometimes interfere with the scrollbar use.. in windows, you are not able to easily change the window size when maximized.

Other than those three things... I guess I am basically satisfied so far .

36
I haven't tried the acronin online backup since it originally came out as a free intro for my True Image.

But I found it very slow.

37
I selected the editor's pick to replace dopdf ... but I was surprised it was not listed too

I use a program called PickBrowser which seems to work ok http://www.xintercept.com/pb/pb.html

It woprks basically by makingitself the default browser triggering it to execute at which point u can choose among available browsers u have configured.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 10

I recommend people toggle on the MENU, OPERATIONS, and LOCATION toolbars (the new ones) and review the menus commands..... I copied some of the buttons/command to my defau;t confgig I'm using from version 9.

Some are new and others improved.

lol, quite a few additions in this release .... upgraded earlier today .... one of the few programs I have that is really worth the extra cost.

44
try the addon capatabilty manager if you haven't already ... I have one of my "wanted extensions" working ... also I recommend u check the site forum pages for beta devolopments.

Opera 11.10 snapshot windows is what I am using ,,,but opera 11 should have it... at least for windows ... I am not sure about linux but I would GUESS it works there too.

Try a standalone install in a new folder (see install options) and test ,,,,, iif it works there u many need to do a clean install of opera and import your current settings.

Rename your profile directory first (see opera:about opera directory folder) if you decide to do a clean install into a new folder.

Files of interest: http://www.opera.com...support/kb/view/313/

After the install you can move your files ...bookmarks, wand etc back.

Here's an example of how to add menu entries to the right click for links http://my.opera.com/...ox-internet-explorer

46
Opera is able to open firefox from a loaded page or via a customized menu entry for links.

As for widgets, I don't know.

So because the patents protect things you consider innovative, you consider MS bad ... If they were protecting what you considered useless patents, then that's OK with you.
Basically this article is merely an emotional piece by someone who doesn't like who or what microsft is taking legal action against,

There seem to be few arguments of real merit.

"Doesn't overwrite original images, although it can be forced to do that if desired."  ... this works as far as I know only if you purchase the product and is disabled on the free version.

But this is definitely a very useful utility .. should save u about 50% of your storage in my experience.

49
Mine says Administrators group too

50
They may have been useful at one time (purchased ones) but there are enough good free utilities out there that I question paying for these anymore
