Developer's Corner / Re: Microsoft's "Rich Signature"
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:18 PM »
That was indeed the link i had previously come across, I apologize for not linking to in my previous post. I had found information on another site that i cannot directly link to, but just in case someone comes across it and thinks it would be good to post, you will find this website as the first result in a google search on "disable rich signature".

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Portable Registry Tool(s)
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:09 PM »
Registry Workshop is both the most popular registry explorer application (in my experience) and is portable. It is also well priced at $30US for a single user license.

Developer's Corner / Microsoft's "Rich Signature"
« on: January 22, 2008, 03:02 AM »
Hi all.
I recently stumbled across some rather disturbing information recently; it seems Microsoft has taken it upon themselves to insert personally identifiable information into every executable linked with their link.exe. This information is refered to as the "rich signature", and is located between the DOS stub and PE header (example below). Apparently thus far they've used it as evidence against several high-profile virus writers.
Thus far the only information i have found on this signature is information on how to prevent it being created by link.exe, and a passing reference to it on the archived SysInternals forums. Out of sheer morbid curiosity, I'd like to ask if anyone else has any further information on the rich signature. If your information is available from an objectionable location, please PM me about it, otherwise feel free to add it to this thread.

Thanks, Ehtyar.

I imagine ring0 is the only place we're going to get any glory here. If i have some extra spare time in the next few days I'll do some poking around, but I'm no driver guru, so if anyone has any hits I'd appreciate them.

Found some interesting info here at OSROnline (surprise surprise). It would seem you can send an IOCTL to your monitor to get it to turn off, and windows will not interfere. Of course for the average user this may be a problem if the application were to crash or whatever, but in this case i believe it would be the perfect solution. Unfortunately i am not even close to the level of experience required for something like this so perhaps someone else *prods f0dder?* is up to the task.

One thing I'd like between these utilities is a list of useful registry keys that don't have a GUI tool to manipulate.

1) not if it caches the IP of the tracker, and the tracker doesn't change IP.

2) it shouldn't. Iirc trackers just give a list of IPs, not hostnames... many clients do perform a reverse-DNS lookup of those IPs, so connect speed can be affected - download speed isn't, though.
100% agreed.

Strange, I got an email saying I was billed but didn't think twice because I was due to be billed anyday now, so it didn't really affect me.
Ditto, but might i mention how disgraceful i find it the way everyone seems primed and ready to bash the he** out of these people. The problem was theirs; they admitted it, they fixed it, they apologized. What more can one ask for? I can imagine far worse results have afflicted the customers of lesser hosting services.

General Software Discussion / Re: .NET Application Startup Times
« on: November 26, 2007, 06:21 PM »
Given the lack of context, i did indeed skip over that comment. I actually assumed he meant JIT debugging as in perhaps the .net framework did some setup for JIT debugging of itself. Thank you for the explanation.

You also need to take into account run-time compiling by dotnet assemblies. I am unsure of the circumstances under which this takes place, but i do know it is only required the first time a .net application is run and compilation takes a LOT of resources, particularly .net. This does not afflict all .net applications.

Honestly, since the first one i was of these i saw, I've been furious at apple (specifically, that one where mac claims he can't get viruses, and vista is getting slaughtered with them, i yelled at the TV and my mother nearly fell off the couch). But i've reached a point where i've realized i can change nothing about the way apple chooses to portray itself in the media, and i now find them to be rather comical. Although they do occasionally speak the truth, mostly they're just funny. This one, ironically, seems to mostly speak the truth.....

Given that you're using IE, you probably don't want to hear this, but firefox saves form data by default every minute or two.....

Living Room / Re: Top 10 Signs You're Coding Too Much
« on: November 11, 2007, 06:56 PM »
Well I'm obviously coding a bit too much, despite the fact that i haven't had a coding project going for like a month... I'm guilty of 1, 2, 5, 7 in various contexts, 8 and 9 in various contexts as a joke and jgp's suggestion.

If you're a coder, you can use StartService and ControlServiceEx. Each blocks until the requested operation times out or is completed.
