Hey mouser i've been using chs for years without issue until yesterday I got a dsaim or something error i dont recall exact error and all clip board entries in chs read:
__INITALSTATE__

so i reinstalled and the list returns but now when i run formatting presets i get :

Id   Application   Favorite?   Modified   Excerpt   Notes
7135      False   7/25/2015 10:27:39 Pm   Id\Tapplication\Tfavorite?\Tmodified\Texcerpt\Tnotes\N

i utterly rely on chs so any advice is appreciated, even if it's "sorry cant help try program $X"

To replace a dvd drive would be as much work as checking the connections.

Here's an external dvd burner to consider.

With our xchange rate that's almost my monthly pension! ;D
i only paid 25 usd for it

Has anyone had any experience with any of these lately? I am still using TVersity but am looking for something with better transcoding support and built-in codec support. Right now, Tversity can't play certain files so I am beginning to look elsewhere. Has anyone messed with Weezo or orb or playon lately? How about any others?

unless you have a netflix accnt w/ instant view playon is a waste a t 40$ pms does hulu just as good i think...

well I've researched the hell outta that drive and found out it is actually a good drive and the added plexutils are reliable and will work for my needs, I've also found better bang for my buck with other drives. however one of the associates I have done business in the past actually has this model and has offered it to me for $25, new still in the box with warranties intact. So I think at that price I'm gonna give plex a try.

What makes you think it's a software problem?

Use ImgBurn and check tools->Filter Driver Load Order. That will let you see filter drivers attached to the CDROM class... if there's nothing suspicious there, it's most likely not a software issue.

well i thought it may be a s/w issue because a) the drive still reads b) i updated the chipset drivers in between the last working burn and this problem.  c) hope.
I am starting to believe that the drive is just dead though... I can't find my live CD to test it under there. and  after flashing the drive ImgBurn gave me this:

ImgBurn
---------------------------
DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) Failed!
Device: [0:0:0] Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A 1.04 (G:) (ATA)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access.
Reason: Access is denied.
Hint: You've got another program running that's using the drive, close it and then click 'Try Again'.
though nothing else was running nor should have been using the drive, so i told imgburn to ignore exclusive access in the settings and it gave me :

I think its definately a software issue.. just a feeling I have. Looking for a disc with my live linux on it, hopefully it should let me try and burn a DVD, if it works there I know its a s/w prob and can do more to try and defeat it! I'm afraid of buying a new drive and STILL having to find the problem.

Living Room / dvd burner crisis
« on: March 18, 2009, 09:03 AM »
hello DC
This morning i decided to catch up on my DVD Archiving.. and got a huge surprise, Nero erred out on me.. so i switched to CDBurnerXP.
erred out again..

the burner still reads fine, and it was burning fine the last time i used it.. couple of months ago.

unfortunately I've installed/removed tons of software lately including intel chipset driver updates. which i tried downgrading.
I've wasted 20 DVDs trying to find the solution.
Is there a better way to test if i fixed the problem without wasting DVDs and hence cash?
I tried googling the error and found a similar problem that was related to the chipset drivers, but couldn't find much else....
anyway attached is my sys info and a cap of the error from CDBurnerXP, please please help me get this up and going.. i can't afford a new burner, and really want to avoid a format/reinstall. as my backup is corrupted, drives are near full. i tried the one restore point i had and that was corrupt to... :(

i am willing to pay if need be, also i have crossloop fyi.

I love graphic novels and Mangas also Drama CD's. Drama cd's are like comics on cd... audio comics.. they are usually independant stories.. or extra info beyond the books etc.. grteat great stuff

there has to be a way to accomplish this, mayhaps autohotkey? let me have a few days to dig into this....

There used to be a tool called: "Campaign Cartographer". It's intended use was for tabletop game campaigns, like Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, etc.

This one was rather costly the last time I looked at it (which is easily 8 years ago) but it was a CAD program with a lot of libraries for terrain, their associated vegetation and also habitation. All to be used at your own discretion.

It is good to see that the software survived all this time, it has expanded quite a lot(!)...the mapmaker alone is 45 USD but if you want "the whole shebang" it will cost 537 USD. The package deal is way overkill for your intends and purposes.

Actually I should thank you for a trip to memory lane when researching this piece of software  :)
I own CC3 Pro and I can tell you it is AWESOMENESS incarnate.you can make any maptype you want from topographical to star maps, floor plans to zone planning to street level. you can even make your own "symbols". the rub: has a steep steep learning curve to get good results.

How ever the company is FANTASTIC about communicating and helping the users. The dev's are all over the mailing lists asking for improvements that we need or helping us figure out how to reach a goal. Its a commercial version of DC almost hehehe

though I would definitely recommend C# over VB

As would I. Older VB has problems with consistency -- retrofitting the idea of "default property" made things complicated. And the fact that the "&" operator can change meaning depending whether there are spaces around it or not is just evil. But that's fixed in VB.Net.

However, once we get to the .Net 1.1 platform, C# and VB are almost equivalent. I'm pretty sure that you could port from one to the other just using some clever regular expression substitutions. So there's no reason you can't get on board with C# as easily as with VB.Net.

But moving on from there (.Net2 and forward), C# has really grown as a language, and VB not so much. So if you take the C# branch, you'll find that the language is better able to progress with your abilities and demands.

ahh see i haven't coded in over 8 years, C# was just coming out and I have no real knowledge of it. I really should pick it up an have a peek. I've been hankering to hack code lately...

Yeah, remember when a phone RANG? Like with a real BELL and everything?
 (see attachment in previous post)
The next time I hear someone's phone go "Doop Dippity Doop Doop" or blast the latest pop hit as the startled owner frantically fumbles in their purse or pocket to quiet the vile wireless beastie will be WAAAY too soon...

my "ring tone" is a voice saying: FOLLOW THE SOUND OF MY VOICE AND KILL WHOEVER HAS THIS CELL PHONE". i  hate having one and i truly mean it. but it is a neccisity as i have medical conditions and have family with same, I had a cell phoe when they where big ol' bricks litterally and had to be installed in the car.
and a pager that was almost as large.

josephus:since no one else has said this, you might also want to look at visual basic to get you started. It does have its flaws, but it is object oriented and I have found that some people are able to understand "basics" better when they were presented thru VB. There are many people who will say that it is a terible language, but really which ever language helps you "get it" the easiest is the one to start with. You'll only know that from fooling around with them a little.
As for the making your own os binary or assembly is probably the language you want there but they aren't the easiest to start wit. that being said I started with assembly...

every language has strengths and weaknesses, find the one that speaks to you.
