Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Possible Large Directory Opus Discount
« on: December 15, 2005, 08:59 PM »
Wow, Thanks mrainey!

I finially decided to actually try xplorer2 and DO yesterday. I must say, the $65 price tag really put me off, but $33 I think I could manage. $25 for xplorer2 seems fare too.

On the other hand, I like xplorer2 better so far (but I've barely given DO a chance).
I really like the idea of getting an FTP client at the same time. I guess I'll have to give the DO options a serious look...

Thanks Carol and elpresi! I'll check out SVCD2DVD, DVDStyler and DVDAuthor GUI ASAP!

I think I can do everything I need to do menu wise with DVD ReMake Pro except link a background image with a sub image. I hope one of the 3 programs above can do it.

I've considered encore, but I hate Adobe so much I don't want another of their viruses programs on my computer.

[edit]Dangit, DVD Author looks like what I need, but I can only find the source (which I can't do anything with). Could someone here compile it for me? I have Windows 2000 and 32bit AMD Athalon...[/edit]

[edit2]Oh wait, I think the GUIs include the binaries... never mind   :)[/edit2]

Oh, something I wish I would have mentioned earlier...

If you're going to get MP3s, get them using "alt preset standard" encoding if you can (best quality to size ratio). I hate using things that are "standard" but this one is worth it. I think it's an option with allofmp3 and I know it's what emusic uses...

BTW, the album "Now That's What I Call Christmas" is a good Christmas double CD set if anyone's looking...

504
I've been looking for a program that can make a DVD menu out of a couple BMPs/PNGs/JPGs/WHATEVERs for hours.......... I don't know anything about DVD menus, but I know I hate them! They should be like html, instead they're more like... bad furnature assembly instructions.

Do any of y'all know of a halfway decient (I'll take a quarter decient) program that can create a DVD menu? All I ask is that it takes less than 50 steps, involves less than 4 programs, and produces files I can import into DVD ReMake Pro (VOBs, IFOs, BUPs... standard DVD files).

This should be easy. They seem to be a grand total of 2 images (or if you're really fancy; a video clip and an image) and a few rectangle areas designated as buttons.

Super mini review of DVD ReMake Pro: Hollywood DVDs have the most convoluted file structures I've ever seen. DRMP seems to work well for what it has to work with, but it isn't exactly mature yet. Example: some components can be deleted by hitting the del key, other components you have to right click and choose delete.

Hmmm... I'm not sure...

I hadn't used a download manager since GetRight in like '99. I visited pretty much every site for every (free) compatible program on the FlashGot website. I downloaded quite a few, but I was also only trying them long enough to move on to the next.

Oh, here's something: there aren't any ads. Kinda nice...

PayPal is easy, you can pay $10, $15, $25, or $50 at a time.

I haven't had any problems with them. Well, one problem, they doubled their prices (they used to charge 1¢ per megabyte).

tsaint, have you used mp3search?

507
I've been using flashgot for a while now too. I like it (but I've barely started using the automated features). I have been using Star Downloader. I think I tried Free Download Manager too but opted for SD for one reason or another though.

508
My sister uses Netflix, she seems to like it. A couple buddies of mine have used Blockbuster Online, they seemed to like it too. I think they're both pretty much the same. I get the impression Netflix's shipping is faster (but I'm not sure). With Blockbuster Online you also get 2 free movie or game rentals at a local blockbuster (if you have a membership).

If you do decide to sign up for blockbuster online, could you consider signing up through the following website? If you do you get the first month for $10 (instead of $15) and I would get a referal credit towards a free Xbox 360.

If you like the program you may benefit from creating the graphics with vectors (svg, swf), then export them as rasters (png, jpg, gif). That way you get the compatibility with browsers and you can scale it if you see fit in the future. Say you think your link bar is just a little too big: just reduce the size to 90%, re-export it to raster, and upload it to your page...

Don't get me started on this.

The record companies are fucking assholes. I hope they dig their grave even deeper with this one. I probably wont ever buy a CD again. Aquiring music online is pretty damn easy, they need to make their service more appealing, maybe by gasp! not trying to rip us off!?!

e-music is the only legitimate site I'll use. They charge 22¢ - 25¢ per download (with subscription) and 30¢ - 50¢ per song after that. They also give you 50 free songs for signing up.
If you would like to give them a try (and you can wait ~12 hours for me to reply) let me "refer" you to e-music. This way we both get 50 free songs (if you decide to stay with them). Send me an e-mail with "e-music" in the subject and I'll send you a referal link to whatever address you give me. My e-mail address is:
my_screenname@earthlink.net .
That address again is
hir....@earthlink.net

Another place to look for cheap music (the might be legitimate) is AllOfMP3.
They charge 2¢ per megabyte. It's not hard getting whole albums for about $2, they let you choose the format and quality too! Prepay with PayPal for maximum "they're not going to scam me" warm-and-fuzzy feeling.

I can't even seem to download a whole book now...

I got about 80%-90% done last night like 3 times (and the resume seemed to just add the whole file to the end of the original).

I've got a Sandisk Sansa mp3 player; will iTunes really work with it?

512
It's been a day and I've now moved "Unlocker" into my keeper list.

Tried to download an audible book, but the audible manager is a POS so even though I'd closed it the partial downloads (that I had just canceled) were "being used." Unlocker made quick work of that and I was back downloading within seconds.

Google customizer is cool, I think I'll keep it, but I'm not sure I'd even notice it if it was gone (not yet anyway).

513
Windows has detected that you have moved your mouse...

Man!

I laughed for a good 2 minutes after reading that!!

When seeing "Windows has detected..." messages (usually after opening a folder and highlighting the exact file it's looking for) I always think ...yeah well, I'm glad somebody's watching.

514
Cool website... pointed me at many programs that sound interesting, will have to give it another look later

So far Google Customizer looks pretty cool, Unlocker might be usefull too... (I'd put links, but I'm too lazy right now)

perhaps donators inside the US who want to receive a postcard from someone outside the US could also send me their mailing postal address and I could include one in each postcard we send overseas, so the recipient can mail back a postcard to someone in the US.  does that make sense?
-mouser

I got ya... You're saying that if you have a database of address (of people who would like an international postcard) than you could write one address from the database on each postcard you send to another country. Then the person in the other country would send a postcard (from their country) to the address from the database.

I seem to be a sucker for writing implements  :-))

Me too... weird...

There's something about a new sharpie that just exudes quality (notice my avatar).
Full size version:

I write constantly at work, it's just notes on what I've done to various computers, but it's constant.
I've been using these Staedtler "Liquid Point 7"s. I haven't tried very many pens, but for what it's worth I'm impressed with these. (I pretty much shopped pens for a good 10 minutes at Staples. I ended up buying these because they had a .3mm tip and "looked fancy." They were about $6 for 4.)

First of all, they're super black, they seem to really lay some ink down. They're not like the Bics that I used to love where the "black" comes out pretty much grey. Every now and then I'll photocopy something I've written; it's actually pretty hard to tell which is the original and which is the copy.

The ink lasts till the end. The reservoir has to be pretty much barren before the writing looks bad.

Lastly the clip is very good. I keep the pen in my shirt pocket, and remove it and replace it constantly. I know it's nerdy, but I can just slide the pen in and out of my pocket without looking. It stays put too, the marker that I keep there slides all over the place, and is pretty annoying, I'm constantly restraightening it. I also have a habbit of sticking the clip onto my finger and taking it off constantly just to hear it snap back into place, the clip doesn't bend or break or loose grip.

On a side note, I ended up washing one of these (and a black Bic sharpie knock-off) in a load of whites. When I took the cap off the Bic marker a little watered down ink came out, but when I took the cap off the pen what looked like pure ink poored out and stained the floor. I think this says something good about the cap.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mp3 Bitrate At A Glance...MP3ext
« on: December 08, 2005, 09:44 PM »
This used to be one of my first installs after a format (whew, back on Win98...). Very cool program, the MP3 tab in the properties is a very usefull add on also.

I haven't installed it in a while though, I'm not sure why. Maybe because I've started getting full albums instead of individual files, and the importance of the bitrate has been replaced with having every track.

519
One thing that's cool with BSPlayer is that the captured images can be output in 2 formats "Original size" and "What you see." Original size (hotkey: P) will take the picture at the video's original resolution (no matter how big it is on the screen). What you see (hotkey: Shift + P) will take the pic at the current resolution/size.

520
I've been using CCleaner for about a week now, I must say I like it a lot. One of the features that brotherS mentioned, the "Cookies to keep" is awesome! I've tried several of the "cookie manager" extensions for firefox, none of them worked 100% of the time for some reason (or I'd have to live without them after a firefox update or something). With CCleaner I've sorted out the 6 cookies I actually want to keep and am content in knowing that I can easily clear the rest with 2 clicks of the mouse.

Another feature I really like (which hasn't been mentioned yet) is that it adds commands to the Recycle Bin context (right click) menu. This makes the program very easily accessible without being super annoying. Now to compulsively empty my recycle bin 25 times a day I choose "Run CCleaner" instead of "Empty Recycle Bin."

521
It is possible to modify the accessed/modified dates + times.

Check this page out. (Enter, then click Software Download, then DOS Utilities)

[edit]oh yeah, look for "stamp")[/edit]

The GodFather is more than your standard audio file tagger. Sure, it can tag your files, but so can 50 other programs, and I bet you already have one that you like. Without making a brag list, TGF will probably handle any file format / tag format combo you can throw at it (except APE tags in MP3 files, the author is against APEs in MP3s). Read on to find out why you should give The GodFather (TGF) a try.

tgf.png

What sets TGF apart from the crowd is that it can use scripts. A basic script could truncate all your tags down to 8 characters. An advanced script could take your tags, correct the case, run 'find and replace' on them, check if they are the same bitrate, output a playlist, and run them all through an external application. Other scripts can be written to parse info from webpages (track names, album art, etc.) into your audio files, or re-organize your whole music collection in one step.

script.png

The GodFather has it's own script editor, I'm sure it's not as good as UltraEdit or SciTE, but it's certainly better than Notepad, it does highlight important words and lets you compile and run the script without saving it or having to switch programs.

colors.png

The GodFather has tons of options, and in the latest betas (currently v 0.71 beta 2) they're finially organized into a nice, neat, central location.

case.png

In the screenshot above you can see the various case options. Worth noting is the 3 lists of words/phrases "Always lowercase," "Always UPPERCASE," and "Exceptions." Always lowercase is all the words that shouldn't ever be capitalized (you may notice that "is" isn't in my list, as contrary to popular beleif "is" is usually capitalized in titles). Always UPPERCASE is the same (but opposite). Exceptions is where you really gain control of your tagging, this list is where you put the words that various recording artists like to mess the case up on. Words like "ATLiens," (which is from an OutKast album I think) "B00MER," and "GooRoo."

replace.png

I think the Replacement Matrix is also worth mentioning. With these you can correct many common annoyances (like using "ft." instead of the word "featuring" or "rmx" instead of "remix"). The replacement matrix and the case rules can be called up in a script by doing something like the following:
tg_setField('Artist',sys_ApplyCase(tg_getField('Artist'),0));
(which applies the case rules to the "Artist" field).

An interesting quirk of TGF is it doesn't apply the changes you make until you hit the "Update" button. The idea is, you can make all the changes you want to the grid, then when you're satisfied with the changes you update the actual files. Some people don't like this, they say "where's the undo?" The answer is: there isn't one. You don't need an Undo with TGF, just don't update 'til you're ready.

log.png

TGF has a built in logger, though it's seldom used. The good thing is: is that you can make your script place stuff into the log. Above is a pic of the log generated by my "Everything" script that lets me know that (based on my case settings) the word "to" has been changed. Now if this was a change I didn't want, I would have caught it simply by reviewing the log. Since the files haven't been updated yet, I can fix the problem in my script or settings that caused the incorrect change, rescan the files (to reset the grid) and run the script again.

library.png

Another feature of The GodFather that needs to be mentioned is that it has a powerful library. Some people use the program only for the library functions. I, on the other hand, haven't ever used the library. But I figured the pic might tell people enough to help them choose to try it or not...
One thing that I'm pretty sure you can do with TGF's library is add files from CDs/DVDs that aren't always going to be in your drives. From some posts on the TGF Forum I get the impression that this isn't a feature of other library programs...

523
Thanks!

Alright, you talked me into it... I was thinking of doing one for a while now, so now I will...

524
It does have a pretty powerful medial library, so I've heard. I don't use it though, so I can't say for certain. The only library I've used is Winamp's...

The GodFather can grab tag info from www.allmusic.com, not only are their tags more accurate (spellings and what not) they also have reviews (which many people like to copy to the comment portion of their tags) and "styles." The styles seperate the music into categories that may work better than generic genres. And thanks to a script made by a few TGF users, all the info on www.allmusic.com can be parsed into your music files. BTW, the music download service "emusic.com" uses reviews from allmusic.com all the time.

TGF also has scripting, something I'd expect the people on this site would jump on. You can do pretty much anything the program can do (and more) in a script. You can even make the script run DOS programs on your music. I made a script that runs mp3gain (in "album" mode) on all your songs at once (something that would have to be done album by album manually). Another script I made finds artist tags where the word "The" is after their name (like "Doors, The") and corrects them ("Doors, The" becomes "The Doors").

TGF has powerful case and replacement settings. The case options has 3 areas "always lower," "always upper," and "exceptions." Exceptions is where you put words like: LeAnn, MacGyver, MxPx, and OutKast (names that don't fit normal capitalization conventions).

I made a script that applies the replacement and case settings, makes sure the album tag is uniform, moves the word "The" back to the beginning of artist names, and makes sure all brackets have a left and a right (I made the brackets it checks user configureable too). The script does all that, plus it logs everything it changes in the program and in a text file. (I hated not knowing what was being changed when I "fixed" my tags.) By the way, TGF has it's own script editor, with highlighting and whatnot (not the best in the world, but beets notepad).

It also has organization capibilities (with scripting too). I haven't used this much (because I want more than what the program will do by default, but am too lazy to write the script myself). But if you have a directory full of random songs, it'll go through and sort them all into folders, you can make it do multiple subfolders if you want. So if you want it to be something like this:
<First letter of artist's name>
  ->Artist Name
    ->Year
      ->Album Name
        ->Songs
it's easily done with TGF...

Here's another thing, that's very useful, that I bet you can't do with other programs: say you have a playlist of all your favorite songs, you can open that playlist in TGF and have it copy all the songs to another folder. Then you could move those songs onto your portable player, or create a mix CD, or whatever, much more easily.

525
"Oh heissa is large the joy" doesn't mean anything to me...

I don't know if the December 3rd page is going to change later or something, but I can't make any sense out of the translation I got...

I *think* it might be some kind of Santa game or something...

PS I downloaded some Ashampoo mp3 program a few months ago, now I get an e-mail from them pretty much every day with a new "special offer" that I can't refuse. Also, the program sucked...
