fSekrit / Re: Is the application part of the file encrypted also?
« on: March 25, 2006, 09:18 AM »
Thank you for the replys!

Actually I did what I should have just done in the first place: opened fSekrit -> wrote a line -> saved it as a new file -> renamed the file from modified.exe to modified.txt -> renamed the original file to original.txt... then compared the 2 files. Of-course they were identical, except the bottom of the modified file had some extra encrypted data.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm going get all my serials off my PDA and put them into fSekrit .exes in my various downloaded program folders...

I've been using Scite, I don't know if I tried any of the others though. Scite is free, uses tabs, highlights parenthesis, and does column selection.

Living Room / Re: hard drive resurrection [I'm desperate!]
« on: March 23, 2006, 07:08 AM »
I did the PCB swap once successfully. It was with 2 40gb Deathstars that I bought at the same time. Both drives broke within a couple months of each other. I think the frankenstien drive is still working in my old TiVo! As far as getting IBM (now Hitachi I think) to give you a PCB, good luck. When my drive first broke I called them and inquired about swapping the PCBs, they told me there was no chance of it working. That was a couple years ago though.

Do the 2 PCBs look the same? Compare each chip if you have time. Here's an idea, scan each one and lay the 2 images on top of each other.
Seems like if every chip is the same it should work. If they are the exact same, and it doesn't work, it may not be worth-it to keep trying to make it work.

Even though it doesn't sound like you'll need the freezer trick, I'll throw this idea out anyway... When you take the drive out of the freezer, plug the IDE cable in, stick it into a zip-lock, and stick the drive between 2 blocks of dry ice. I bet something like has been tried before, so search around before trying it. Another thing that might be worth trying is to somehow seal the drive in a ziplock or something with the IDE cable sticking out (maybe cover the whole thing in clay/grease/rubber cement). Submerge the drive in a large container of water and freeze the whole thing (I wonder if there would be a danger of crushing the drive from the pressure of the ice?). Then hook the block of ice + HDD to your comp and copy until *something* breaks.
If you wanna get really crazy; maybe you could get some mineral oil (which is supposidly non-conductive), submerge the drive in that, freeze it (does oil freeze easily?) then copy to your heart's content.

... later ...

Actually come to think of it, the mineral oil wouldn't have to be frozen to keep the HDD cool, it would still be <32º, that should keep it cool enough until you get your data off. Make sure to plug the air hole before dunking it though.

Hi, as many of you probably remember I used to (late '05) have a signature line that said something like "Get a free Xbox 360!" which was a referral link to the freepay website. At the time, I had already received a free iPod from them (before they changed their name from "Gratis Internet"). I'm confident I will get a free Xbox 360 from them, but I would advise against attempting it from now on because of a couple recient changes they've made to their policies.

Here are the reasons:
1. They reciently changed their policy so that you have to complete all their requirements within 90 days. I've seen from experience that this would be nearly imposible if your friends are half as caucious with what they think is their personal information as mine are.

2. My sister was my last referral, and neither I nor my sister got credit for the offer she completed. I had this happen once when I was doing the iPod stuff. What used to have to be done is: wait 15 days (WAY too frigging long!), e-mail/send them a copy of your confirmation e-mail, then wait while they "confirmed" your order. NOW it's pretty much the same (you still have to wait 15 days, which is BS if you ask me) but there is no longer a way to e-mail them your confirmation e-mail, now you have to fax it to them!

They are actively trying to rip people off, and it REALLY pisses me off!

So, let this be a warning to anyone who may have been thinking about signing up for one of these sites: Don't start, or if you do, get all your referrals lined up before you join. Dealing with their fucking bullshit very may well take the 3 months they allow for everything. Let me re-itterate that I'm not saying that you wont get your product if you jump through their hoops, I'm only saying that they have now made it extremely difficault to complete the requirements in the time they allot. Also, if you do decide to join one of these sites, find someone deserving online and let them "refer" you, it wont change your elegibility/requirements/status, and will get them one step closer. With that said, here's my referral link... just kidding.

Sorry, but I'm going to put a few keywords below for people who may find this post whilst searching the net for information like this.

fSekrit / Is the application part of the file encrypted also?
« on: March 20, 2006, 02:47 AM »
I think I will start using this program, it sounds very cool!

I do have one question:

The application and the text are stored in one file, does that mean the application is also encrypted? The reason I ask is that I've heard it's easier to crack encryption if you already know what is encrypted.

To say it another way: If I encrypt the sentence "My password is GOD" would it be easier to decrypt if I told you the beginning of the encrypted data is "My password is "? So if some hacker person knows what the application data is when it's decrypted does that make it easier to decrypt the application + text?

Cool video! If I see anyone using one of those locks I'd like to try that (merely in the interest of science of course)!

Favorite quote from the video: ...so actually you're militarizing the roll of toilet paper.

He's actually saying miniturizing...

Just after that misquote does he call the duct tape "ghetto" tape?

Both those sites are awesome!

Mac Man is such a great game!

I've now taken a look at PC Inspector File Recovery. It actually seems pretty cool! I didn't do a whole lot with it (having not actually "lost" any data) but it did find all the files I deleted from my flash drive...

Living Room / Re: 10 most annoying clocks
« on: March 16, 2006, 04:13 AM »
On a serious note, what I do is set 4 alarms (on my PDA). The first is very quiet (a soft beep that repeats every 2 minutes for 14 minutes), then a little louder (at the same interval), then music (the same song every morning :( ), then a very loud, very annoying beep that repeats every 20 seconds. I haven't been able to sleep through the last one yet, and sometimes I get woken up by the much more pleasent first 3 alarms.

Here's an idea for an alarm clock: make you play a game of simon before it stops beeping. You could program a set number you have to repeat.

Woop, 11 down!

[much later]
Welp, I got 13 of them.

If you don't recognize the sequence: "6, 28, 496, 8128," don't waste your time trying to figure this one out! (There's at least an hour of my life I'll never get back...)

"14, 23, 28, 33, 42" - _NOT_ outside the box!
The author of the site thought he was being clever with this one, but I beat him!
The +2 / -2 is the key...

14 = 7x2
23 = 7x3 + 2
28 = 7x4
33 = 7x5 - 2
42 = 7x6
51 = 7x7 + 2

Here's the best color blindness test I could find: Right Heah

Click "Begin" to start the test, and click the "Next" links to continue. There are 24 plates.

Personally, I can easily make out plates 1 and 24 only.... I can make out the lines/numbers (red is easier) in plates 16, 17, and 18.

I haven't used any of these programs, yet, but they are free, and could be a life saver if needed.

I've downloaded "File Recovery," "E-Maxx" (iso), and "Clone-Maxx" (iso).

Has anyone used these pieces of software? Heard anything about the company?

I like the idea of free software, but this company reminds me of Ashampoo(sp?) software, I downloaded a program or 2 from them like a year ago, and still get daily e-mail updates of the new "deals" they're offering...

[edit]Oh yeah, here's the link:
PC Inspector

Here's another company (Lexun) who has some similar software, again I haven't tried it...

It looks like their normal website doesn't work or something, so here's the page I used to download their stuff:

MAN! I just finished going through the awesome list on the forum, only to notice that it was copied from the website posted by brotherS above (http://www.neowin.ne...php?showtopic=320017)...

Looks like the neowin list is even better!

If I could make a request Deozaan; please put the link to the original in your first post.

I've found it now... The e-mail address I used to register The Bat! wasn't set up in my installation of The Bat!. Luckly I haven't deleted my Pocomail folder yet!

Best E-mail Client / I lost my The Bat! license...
« on: March 12, 2006, 09:44 PM »
So, I reciently formatted and reinstalled Windows, now I can't find my license for The Bat!... I'm not even sure what I'm looking for (a file, an e-mail, serial number, etc.).

To anyone out there who owns The Bat! could you check your registration e-mail/file/other for keywords that I can search for?
(Example: if the registration info is in a file, and the file is named "thebatreg.key" I can search my comp for that file.)

I was hoping to see more pictures here, oh darn.

I don't have any pets myself, but my neighbor does, all he's gotta do is put an open box on the floor and his cats are happy.

That reminds me, I gotta send that in!

Tactics like these really piss me off! However, had known earlier: I probably would still have bought my NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800GTX!

Not only because it is actually CHEAPER than the competition, but because it delivers blazing frame rates and today’s most advanced features—including support for Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Shader Model 3.0, high dynamic-range (HDR) lighting, and NVIDIA® SLI™ multi-GPU technology. NVIDIA GeForce GPUs deliver the ultimate performance and ultra-realistic effects on today’s hottest games.
