Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: ITSD Organizer keeps your notes at hand
« on: October 12, 2005, 03:33 AM »
For notes, recipes, game codes/faqs, whatever,  I stick with Keynote:

Keynote's never quite "clicked" with me, and I noticed that the person who collects the Yahoo! group on PowerPro as a Keynote file remarked that it "struggled" with large files.  Any comments on that?

General Software Discussion / Controlling hotkeys
« on: October 11, 2005, 06:00 AM »
I installed Folder View, found it tended to hang/crash my system, so uninstalled it again.  But it's left a hotkey behind, and it's one I sometimes press in Total Commander's file finder.  Windows then says Can't find the folder, blah-blah.

How do I remove the hotkey when the application itself isn't there any more?  I can't click on the .EXE in Windows Explorer or whatever and (obviously) can't get to the Properties dialog of a file that no longer exists.

How about an image (don't ask me to draw it) of a machine with a handle (could be like a meat mincer) - coins in one end, software out of the other ?

Weird Al Walker used to use an inverse of that, bits in, tools and product out
http://webappwarehou...om/weirdal/utils.htm

Stefan mentioned SED and AWK, which are both command-line text manipulation tools.  SED is the simplest, and is best used for regular expression search and replace.  AWK is its own little programming language, and is a more powerful than SED, but much

Uh, I ended up feeling that SED was a bit like trying to use an early programmable calculator, and that AWK was actually easier simply because it's more like a recognisable language.  Eric Pement has a good Web site for both and also for the kind of command line tools Stefan mentioned (go to his SED page and keep paging down);

Eric Pement's  Web site; SED, Awk, Perl, search-and-replace utilities including useful supplementary information, help and workarounds for Minitrue / MT / MTR / Ministry of Truth under Windows 2000 / Win2K.

One set of Unix utils ported to Windows and including CAT is at
http://unxutils.sourceforge.net

Mouser, here's the online help for the Berkley utils version of cat, more informative than the GNU equivalent;

=== begin quote ===
usage: berkcat file(s)
Concatenates the file(s) to the standard output.
If one of the files is `-', the standard input is used.
No options.
Example:
       C:>cat - file1 >newfile
       this is the new first line
       and this is the second.
       ^Z
       C:>mv newfile file1

This is a way to add 2 lines to the beginning of file1 without using
an editor.

To append file1 at the end of file2, type
        cat file1 >> file2
=== end quote ===

Oh, and RJ, yes, I started out with AutoIt 2 and 3 early this year, but switched to AutoHotkey to suit my own uses for it. I use AutoHotkey mainly as an autocorrect and hotkey application. I have other scripts, some thanks to skrommel, but mainly for those two uses, which AutoHotkey makes easy and fast. If I'm correct, AutoHotkey is based on AutoIt.

Thanks, zridling...  I've steered clear of AutoHotkey partly because its autocorrect feature doesn't work in Win98, IIRC, and I still use some Win98 computers.

1-4a Renamer looks mighty fine, but I love BULK RENAME UTILITY!

The requirements are resolution at least 800 x 600.  Currently I'm stuck in 640 x 480.  Talk about  "Worst.  Interface.  Ever."  :(

Probably you've a proxy server configured. If yes, configure the same proxy server in Firefox.

That was the one!  Many thanks!

Flexible Renamer

zridling,

Have you looked at AutoIt *3* vs. AutoHotkey?  (not grinding an axe here, just curious).

Also, did you look at 1-4a Renamer  http://www.1-4a.com

I particularly noticed your comments about the "reliability" of freeware renamers...

General Software Discussion / Re: Word AutoCompleter
« on: September 30, 2005, 06:11 AM »
Hi

I just to check if you guys know any word auto completer like IntelliComplete

 http://www.flashpeak.com/icomp/

I don't know if these are quite the same, but FWIW there's a thing called AllChars mentioned in PricelessWare   http://allchars.zwolnet.com
=== begin quote ===
AllChars also supports macros functionallity: expanding abbreviations into
longer text strings.
Macros support includes secret macros for logins etc. and date/time functions.
=== end quote ===

Also, Two Pilots  http://www.colorpilot.com/index.html  has a freeware called Speed Typing which does shorthand expansion; go to their freeware page to find it.  They offer a more advanced payware version called Type Pilot.

Total Commander is so ugly I could never use it the way it is.

Total Commander's interface is like a Land Rover, or for Americans, an owner-driver Peterbilt or Kenwood.  What you get is ruthless muscularity.  You don't expect it dressed in a pink frilly tutu.

I suppose, for me, the "Worst.  Interface.  Ever."  has to be...  Windows.  Total Commander was the first program I found that made it almost semi-tolerable.

This is IE 5.  On this computer I'm in a corporate environment and can't change it.

you might mention to your corporate person in charge of not letting you change it,
that running IE 5 is probably an excellent way to open your company to some security issues - i'm not sure but somehow i doubt that IE5 is very secure.

You know that, I know that - but IT are infamous for non-cooperation   :(

m_s, wr975 - many thanks, will check.

No, Ctrl-N doesn't work either.  <sigh>

Thanks anyway...

Eh... select File / New Window?

I'd recommend a IE frontend browser, like Slimbrowser (my favorite), Maxthon, etc... 100% IE compatibility and many new features. All of them with tabbed browsing...

There isn't a New Window entry under the File menu...  This is IE 5.  On this computer I'm in a corporate environment and can't change it.  I installed Firefox, and that can't even find an Internet connection because it all goes through the heavily "security" conscious corporate network...

Living Room / Stupid IE question
« on: September 29, 2005, 11:16 AM »
OK, OK.  Enough banging head against keyboard.

If I'm at a Web page, how do I make IE open up another window so I can go and check something on some completely unrelated Web page?  If there's a link I can right-click, I can do that then edit the address, but if there isn't?

I must be missing something obvious  <grump>

nikkho i'm with you about total commander,
though in fairness its one of the most beloved programs by a large number of people,
so i think it's one of those programs you either totally love, or totally can't bear to use.

I love it - mainly because I started with DOS programs (hello, you newbies), command lines, XTree Pro, TSRs, the wonderful DESQview, and eventually a series of twin-pane file managers.  Norton Commander clones are probably a bit like WordStar editing commands: once you've learnt how, everything else looks cackhanded, cumbersome and slow.  This could be a form of kinaesthetic memory, like walking downstairs at home without needing to watch your feet.  Your muscles know how to do it without conscious intervention.

Worst interface?  Worst to look at, worst for newbies, or worst for for long-term heavy users?

General Software Discussion / Re: Macro programs - advice sought...
« on: September 27, 2005, 09:42 AM »
Yeah AutoIt and AutoHotKey are two amazing utilities.  I tend to use AutoHotKey more for "shell tweaks" (hotkeys, always-running windows enhancements) and AutoIt for scripting.  AutoHotKey has a very simple and

What do you define as a "script?"  What I'm thinking of is that in PowerPro - *IF* I remember correctly - you can't mix mouse operations with keyboard commands without putting them in a script, albeit you can create operations directly that use only one or the other.

General Software Discussion / PCW anti-spyware review
« on: September 23, 2005, 09:14 AM »
The latest (November 2005) edition of the UK magazine Personal Computer World
  http://www.pcw.co.uk  has a review of anti-spyware.  Very briefly:

Two main recommendations -

  Microsoft Antispyware Beta  http://www.microsoft.com/uk
Still a beta, but ore successful than most, and worth the free download

  PCTools Spyware Doctor  http://www.pctools.com
Good performance, informative results, free: PCW said there was little reason to upgrade from the free version (to paid-for support).  You need free registration for real time monitoring.

-----------

  Spybot Search and Destroy  http://www.spybot.info
Free, quick, useful information but doesn't fix everything

-----------

They thought Lavasoft Adaware disappointing for a well-known package.  8 others included in the review.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: NirCmd Setup, a guide of sorts
« on: September 21, 2005, 09:45 AM »
Would people who like nircmd also like Steve Gibson's Wizmo?

=== begin quote ===
Wizmo is a multipurpose miscellaneous Windows utility that provides an array of single-click functions that are missing from Windows. Triggered by a single mouse click, it can do things like power down your system's displays, activate your screen saver, change or mute the audio volume, restart, reboot, or shutdown your system, and much more. It even includes a rather cool built-in "Graviton" screen saver that simulates the motion of any number of mutually gravitationally attracted celestial objects.

I Love opera but since I cant get support of RoboForm I just stopped using it.
I've never even looked at RoboForm, but, could you get the same functionality from macro programs that you might run anyway?

So how are Opera going to make any money?  Surely few people will pay for premium support?

Presumably by premium email accounts (why would anyone use this?) and advertising

How about a utility that would allow a specified command line or application to be run when a process exits, or drops to 0% CPU usage for more than x minutes?

Have you ever looked at PowerPro, freeware macro program for Windows?
http://powerpro.webeddie.com/index.html

Beginners user group / mailing list:
http://groups.yahoo..../powerpro-beginners/

Main mailing list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/power-pro/

PC Rangers third-party PowerPro support
http://powerpro.pcrei.com
Contains archives of the user groups, the "Wink" based Flash demos, etc.

I'm moderately sure there was a question similar to yours in a recent post in the beginners group recently.  With PowerPro, the answer seems to be "Yes: now how much time do you want to put into making it work?"
