Found Deals and Discounts / FREE Affinity Publisher BETA available
« on: August 30, 2018, 04:32 PM »
email from Serif, received 30th August 2018:

** Download the FREE Affinity Publisher beta!
------------------------------------------------------------

From the earliest days of visualising the Affinity range, we planned an unrivalled trio of sleek, super-modern apps created to work with the latest technology – ultra-fast, with stunning power and completely stripped of bloat.

Today that vision comes a step closer to completion, with the launch of our desktop publishing app Affinity Publisher in a free public beta.

We are still a few months away from the polished retail release, but we’d love for you to try it out and let us know what you think.
Download the FREE beta (https://affinity.ser...;mc=PUBBETALAUNCHE01)

The public beta is free and open to absolutely anyone – you just need a Mac or PC that meets the minimum system requirements (https://affinity.ser...;mc=PUBBETALAUNCHE01) .

What does Affinity Publisher do?

Affinity Publisher is an all-new app which we believe will revolutionise desktop publishing in the same way Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer have shaken up professional photo editing and vector graphic design.

It will have everything you would expect from a pro-end desktop publishing app including advanced typography controls, linked text frames, master pages, facing page spreads, dynamic photo frames, tables, baseline grids, linked resources and end-to-end CMYK.

And uniquely, Affinity Publisher will boast full integration with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. You will see buttons to switch to Photo and Designer within the app, though these won’t be activated until later in the beta period.

We’ve also produced some handy tutorial videos to get you started – you’ll find these on our website here (https://affinity.ser...;mc=PUBBETALAUNCHE01) .

What if I spot an issue?

An important thing to remember is this is a beta, so there will still be bugs and areas of the app which are not yet fully polished. We definitely don’t recommend you use it for any important production work just yet.

We’re relying on beta users to let us know what works and what doesn’t, so we’d really appreciate you reporting any issues that you find. Also if there are any features you would like adding, please let us know. Even if we don’t get them in before we release version 1, you can expect plenty of free updates to come, just like with our other apps.

We have set up a dedicated forum for beta users to report issues, give feedback and make suggestions which can be found here (https://affin.co/publisherbetaforum) .
Download the FREE beta (https://affinity.ser...;mc=PUBBETALAUNCHE01)

We totally understand that not everyone wants to take part in a beta, and many more of you are excited for the full app.

Rest assured we’ll bring you more information about the launch of Affinity Publisher as we get closer. We’re making good progress on the iPad version too, which is set to follow at a later date.

You can keep up to date with our progress, plus everything else we are working on by following us on our socials - Twitter (https://affin.co/TW) , Facebook (https://affin.co/FB) and Instagram (https://affin.co/inst) .

** It’s been an incredible couple of weeks at Serif HQ!
------------------------------------------------------------

Months of planning, development and collaboration all came together last week as we announced the launch of Affinity Designer for iPad at our very first Affinity Live event, held at our headquarters in Nottingham.

The app was developed with input from a team of over 40 leading professional graphic designers including David Sossella, Ian Barnard, Bob Byrne, Paolo Limoncelli, Tom Ludd and Man-Tsun Tsang and it was a real privilege that some of them travelled a huge distance (from as far away as Hong Kong) to attend our event in person.

If you would like to see how Affinity Live was done (you’ll be amazed by the dramatic transformation of Serif HQ) and watch the keynote presentation made by our Managing Director Ashley Hewson, check out our behind the scenes article (https://affinityspot...amp;mc=AFFNL201807_L) on Affinity Spotlight.

And if you haven’t already taken advantage of our launch offer you can still save 30% on the full cost of Affinity Designer for iPad (https://affinity.ser...amp;mc=AFFNL201807_L) in the App Store until 25 July.

Here’s some more exciting news we would like to share…

Other momentous news is that we’ve reached one million app sales! It’s incredible to think how far we’ve come since the launch of Affinity Designer on macOS back in 2014.

In just four years we’ve delivered six incredible products (Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo on macOS, Windows and iOS), two stunning workbooks and amassed a plethora of prestigious awards including two coveted Apple Design Awards, a TIPA Best Imaging Software Award and twice we’ve been crowned Apple App of the Year. We’re also incredibly proud to have been voted Application Creator of the Year at the annual Microsoft Developer Awards in May.

It’s been an incredible journey for all of us here and there’s still so much more to come, so stay tuned - our future plans are just as exciting!

Another exciting announcement made at our live event, is that we are starting a free public beta of Affinity Publisher before the end of August.

All the best,

General Software Discussion / PTFB Pro Version 5 released
« on: September 28, 2016, 04:28 PM »
As reported in its author's blog and e-mail, a rare major update of PTFB Pro:

PTFB Pro Version 5

PTFB Pro Version 5 Adds Visual Triggers and Command Line Control
Posted on September 4, 2016 by Paul Roberts

PTFB Pro has just received a major update and its brought a lot of new features that our customers have been asking for, including:

1) Visual Triggers

Your macros can now fire automatically when a change is seen in a portion of the target window or the screen. It’s a huge new addition for PTFB, allowing it to react to things that we as humans can readily see (such as changes to text, graphics and color) but which previously it was unable to detect. This new trigger can be fine-tuned in a number of ways, so you can have your macros fire exactly when you need them to.

2) Greatly improved command line control for better integration with Powershell and other script shells

Ever since version 3 it’s been possible to trigger macros via the command line, but version 5 has expanded on this considerably. From the command line you can now:

Enable/Disable PTFB Pro as a whole, enable/disable a list of macros
Trigger any number of macros AND pass named parameters through to be used by v5’s newly extended macro actions
Properly synchronise command line actions thanks to the new /WAIT command line directive

3) Control the clipboard

A new “Set Clipboard” macro action has been added which lets you load literal text, the contents of text files, and even files themselves into the Windows clipboard, for use in subsequent paste operations. This action can take a command line parameter, so you can pass in clipboard content from a script or command shell such as Powershell.

4) Track when a macro was last used, and easily archive little-used macros

I’m not afraid to admit that I have mild hoarding tendencies; when I create a macro or single press for a specific job I rarely delete it. The result is that over time my copies of PTFB Pro have filled up with lots of items that were used heavily for a short time, but have layed dormant ever since. PTFB Pro dutifully loads them into memory and checks them multiple times each second to see if they’re ready to fire automatically; remove them, and PTFB Pro becomes just a little leaner and faster to respond. Version 5 now tracks the most recent usage date/time, and can use this information to disable unused items and/or move them to a specific tab.

5) Instantly test your settings on the “Identifying the Target” page

There can be a learning curve for people who are tailoring a single-press or window-based macro so that it keeps firing even when the target window changes. Version 5 takes the guesswork out of this process by adding a “View Matches” button to the target identification page; press that button, and PTFB Pro will show you exactly which windows match your settings.

I’ll take a closer look at these new features in later posts, but you can try them out yourself right now by getting your copy of v5 from our download page: http://www.ptfbpro.com/download.shtml

Note that because this is a major upgrade it’s only free to people who bought v4 on or after June 1st 2016 (about 90 days prior to the release of v5). Anyone who bought before this date can purchase an upgrade license at a 50% discount. Please visit our upgrades page for more details or just send an email to [email protected] and we’ll send you a free license / discount purchase link  – whichever is appropriate.

Screenshot Captor / Ctrl+Z Undo doesn't work?
« on: July 28, 2016, 03:36 PM »
I only occasionally need screenshots, so I find SSC overwhelming.  But I didn't abandon it because of its complexity, but because Ctrl+Z Undo doesn't seem to work, at least not as I expected.

SSC makes screen captures perfectly well.  My problem is in editing a screenshot.  I start to annotate, then decide I should (e.g.) have put an arrow in a slightly different place.  I press Ctrl+Z Undo to remove the arrow - and just get an angry beep, with no change on screen.  At this point, Hypersnap and PicPick both obediently revert to the previous version of the on-screen image, and that's what I expect to happen with SSC.

Have I misunderstood how Undo is supposed to work, or do I need to configure something?  I have the latest portable SSC, 4.16.1, installed on Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, UAC On, user account.

Thanks.

In this post, 4wd kindly corrected a munged Wikipedia link I'd put in.

If you use the reply box and click the button to enter an ordinary URL, the forum software pops up a little dialog so you can put it in in correct form, which is:

[url=http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=42726.msg399785#msg399785]Re: Suggestion: A new GUI for ExifTools [/url]

But if you want to enter a Wikipedia link, the relevant button just gives:

[wiki][/wiki]

with no indication of exactly what is wanted, which is similar to a plain URL:

[wiki=Comparison_of_metadata_editors]Comparison of metadata editors[/wiki]

which gives

Comparison of metadata editorsw

Evidently just the Wikipedia page is needed.  Putting in the whole URL gives a Wikipedia error:

[wiki=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_metadata_editors]Comparison of metadata editors[/wiki]
wikie_err.png

Please can
[wiki][/wiki]
in the reply box either be replaced by a dialog similar to the plain URL one, or otherwise be a bit clearer about the correct form to put in?

<sigh>  I seem to have made a meal of this...

If you use Windows Photo Gallery, or IrfanView, or whatever image file viewer, it will present a series of images in the usual alphanumeric filename order.  Often I wouldn't want to do that, but to present a series in the logical order of telling a story, as it were.  Of course, you can easily rename images, but it's not quite so easy to rename a series and get the sequence right.

What I think I'd like is a program that presents a screen of thumbnails, or a bit bigger than thumbnails, and lets you drag and drop them into a visually pleasing order regardless of their current filenames, with, please, keyboard means of doing the same thing.  When they're ordered to one's satisfaction, press a button that would rename/renumber them by prepending numbers in the new sequence to their existing names.  That should make them play in the right order in any image viewer.  As a valuable refinement, the ability to click or press Enter on an image and have IrfanView or one's preferred image viewer present the image full size.

Is there such a thing, please?

40
I use KeePass, KeePassDroid, and AI RoboForm for Windows; I'm aware that lots of people like LastPass, and DC has mentions of others, e.g Password Depot.  I've recently seen references to 1Password and Dashlane, both of which seem cloud-based.  Please, does anyone have experience of these, especially compared to the ones mentioned above?

41
All my passwords start in KeePass, and I use KeePassDroid on Android.  This works well enough, probably because I also run Clipper+ , but I'd quite like to have an automatic form-filler like RoboForm - preferably without having to pay an annual subscription...  Any suggestions, please?

Found Deals and Discounts / DxO photo software 30% off January 2015
« on: January 24, 2015, 03:35 PM »
The February 2015 edition of NPhoto magazine contains reviews of a handful of image editing programs.  DxO Optics Pro from DxO Labs compensates for distortion, fringing, edge softness and vignetting caused by digital camera lenses, but it also contains a RAW converter that NPhoto's reviewers consider arguably the best RAW converter in the group they tested (reading between the lines, PhaseOne's Capture One Pro 8 might be even better in some ways, but more expensive).  Until the end of January 2015 DxO have a sale that offers around 30% off their products, including the complete suite of three.  Apart from Optics Pro, they offer ViewPoint for geometric perspective correction tools (e.g. wide-angle distortion) and FilmPack, which emulates the look of a wide range of films, and to some extent of old film camera lenses.

Looks like the latest version, DxO OpticsPro 10, needs Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 64-bit and doesn't support Vista or earlier.  See Help Center/Frequently Asked Questions/DxO Labs product operating system compatibility.

I run Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, UAC On, user account.  Lately I've had a number of BSODs.  When Windows finally crawls back into action, I usually find the tray has been partially scrambled.  The Network icon is usually missing, and the icons whose notifications I've customized are all set to Hide when inactive.

Please, is there any way to save the tray configuration for these, so I don't have to change them back to the way I want them by hand?

TIA...

General Software Discussion / The most stupid Windows error?

Breevy is a text expander for Windows that helps you type faster and more accurately by allowing you to abbreviate long words and phrases -- saving you time and money.

Simply define an abbreviation for a longer piece of text, like eml for [email protected].

Then, in the future, instead of typing that longer piece of text, type the abbreviation you associated with that text in any application, and Breevy will automatically replace it for you, instantly.

I'm looking for a simple image comparison tool.  That is, if I make several variations on a digital photo, I'd like to be able to see them all on screen at the same time, in their original aspect ratios, tiled, and sized so as to fill the screen as much as possible (i.e. be as big as possible, rather than thumbnails).  The attached image is from Faststone Image Viewer 5.2, the first such application I've seen though 4 images is the maximum.  Are there any alternatives, please?

From a post in the Crimson Editor Yahoo! Group:
Since development of the Crimson Editor ceased several years ago, I decided it was time to create a new project with similar features and functionality.

I am officially announcing the Diamond Editor.

I've never seen this happen to a software license before  :o  My italics:

Happy birthday Frog!
Posted by berry – July 10, 2014

The Frog is 6 years old. Not too bad for the amphibian. Not bad for most software either.

In celebration, we’re offering a NoteFrog license at the incredible price of $9.95 and also introducing – NoteFrog “friends and family” licensing.

From now until the end of the promotion, licensing is an “in perpetuity” (Lifetime) license. You may use NoteFrog forever and will be entitled to any and all future versions offered. And, yes, there will be future versions offered. We use NoteFrog ourselves and will continue to improve it and add features. Version 3 is currently in beta testing and features AES128 database encryption as an option for those of you concerned about the privacy/security of your NoteFrog library. We are also working on the inclusion of HTML data in the library. These and other improvements will be available to all registered users.

All NoteFrog development will continue to be made available to our licensees, but following this policy transition we will no longer be actively marketing/selling NoteFrog. All NoteFrog upgrades will be limited to the existing “family” of users.

Quite a few of our current licensees are word-of-mouth customers. They’ve joined the NoteFrog family as a result of a recommendation from a family member, friend or associate. We appreciate the loyalty of our customer base, so we will continue to make NoteFrog available to your “friends and family” based on a recommendation from you, our customers. Simply send us the email address for your NoteFrog “friends and family” license request using your NoteFrog registration email account and we will send them an email link allowing them to purchase NoteFrog at the “friends and family” license price, currently $15.95. This “friends and family” referral will be the only way to obtain a NoteFrog license after the current promotion period.

Help spread the word, and the word is “The Frog is having a sale.”

But don’t delay. When the sale is over, it’s over.

No time period quoted for the promo?

** Introducing CintaNotes Lifetime PRO License
------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a CintaNotes PRO license, you're probably not exactly jubilant about having to renew your license every year to continue receving new versions.

Many users have requested us to provide an option for a so-called lifetime license: pay a bit more upfront, then receive free updates for life. No more worries about the license key being not valid for a new version - only stress-free note taking.

We have pondered on the idea and have finally decided to give it a try. So I'm glad to say that, effective today, we make the CintaNotes Lifetime PRO license available!

The price for this license is higher than for a regular license: 119 USD for new customers, and 79.99 USD for existing customers. Why is it so much higher? Because we've learned from mistakes of others: in the past, many good software products disappeared because their authors had set the price of a lifetime license too low. And then had to abandon any further development, because the flow of new customers just wasn't strong enough. We wouldn't want this to happen to CintaNotes. So I'd like to stress this out: we offer this more as a convenience option, not as a discount.
Feature-wise there is no difference between PRO and Lifetime PRO. The only difference will be that Lifetime PRO license holders will enjoy priority technical support.

AJC Active Backup Version 2.0.0 Released 21 Feb 2014

From the e-mail:
We have just released AJC Active Backup v2.0.11 after successful beta testing.

If you are a v1 user please reply to this and you can get a 30% discount for v2.

Download it from our web site but we would prefer if you can get it from Microsoft here to help our download count:
http://visualstudiog...90-917e-40224827ba93
Just click on the purple "Get now" button.

If you feel appropriate you could give us a review on the "Reviews" tab which would be very helpful.

A few things have been added since our last news:
+ You can now pick an alternative external diff program.
+ A "saved me" button has been added to the toolbar so you can let us and your friends know if you have been saved from losing files.

For anyone who missed it, below are the AJC Active Backup details again:

Version control for your hard drive!  Protects you while you work, from mistakes, file corruption and gives great peace of mind.  A must for anyone who values their work.

AJC Active Backup constantly monitors your computer for changes to your files and archives them as soon as you save.  It keeps multiple versions of these files in a compact archive because it only stores the changes each time.  You can compare your files to earlier versions to see what has changed and go back to any version.  It does not slow your computer down because you only backup important files.

AJC Active Backup v2 has the following improvements over v1:

  • Complete rewrite with a modern UI.
  • Restore partial file changes back from your archives using built in AJC Diff v2. This lets you edit files while you are comparing them.
  • More visible overview of what folders you are monitoring for changes on the Home tab.
  • List of recently archived files is now kept when restarting the application.
  • Easier to set up and access file patterns etc.
  • You can change options live without having to stop monitoring for changes.
  • File patterns tester tool so you can test if a file will match your patterns.
  • New archives explorer lets you navigate through your backup archives more easily.
  • Its now easier to restore multiple files and you can see exactly where each file will go.
  • Includes the new AJC Revision Archive v2 archive viewer.
  • Compatible with AJC Sync backup archives.
  • For programmers: AJC Diff v2 offers code syntax highlighting.
  • For programmers: Visual Studio add in for you to access your archives more easily while you are coding.
  • Diagnostics mode lets you see what is happening when a file is detected. This helps if you don't know why a file is being backed up.

IMPORTANT NOTE for Active Backup v1 users:
It is best to uninstall v1 before you install v2.  When you are asked to choose the archive destination base folder it will be best to pick a new location because v2 will upgrade the archives to a newer format that v1 cannot use.  This is just in case you want to go back to v1.
