The latest release of Listary now looks more like FileBox Extender, see attached image.

Listary 3.0 has finally been released!

Listary focuses on improving your file experience now. The most exciting new
feature is the toolbar added to standard file open/save dialogs. You can get
quick and direct access to your favorite folders through it, and yes, you'll
have the "recently opened file and folder list" like Microsoft Office 2010
in almost all applications! (You can turn off this feature and clear the
recent list easily in the toolbar or "Options > Recent", and everything is
configurable just as before.)

Some other changes:
# Automatically select last opened file in file open/save dialog.
# The leading "/" for commands and favorite folders is no longer needed.
# You can always use the hot key Win + W to let Listary show up in Explorer
or file open/save dialog even if the input focus is not on a list.
# The Favorite feature supports submenu now.
# Some new commands.

Download link: http://www.listary.c...download/Listary.exe
Enjoy it!

P.S. You'll notice that some features (like text editing) are missing in
this new version. They will be either packed into separate applications or
added back in the next version according to user feedback. So please let me
know if you miss some removed features.

List Price: $69.95
You Save: 51%

XYplorer home page

Well-liked on DC.  Must be one of the most frequently-updated programs in existence!

BdJ's extended blurb:
When you really think about it, file management in Windows hasn't really changed all that much since the olden days of Windows 3.1. But the way that we use our computers, coupled with the explosion in the number of files that we now store, has made dealing with file management an onerous, almost painful task! Thank goodness XYplorer is here to inject some balance, order, and fun to file management!

XYplorer is the last file manager you'll ever need to install! With XYplorer, you get multiple tabs to jump quickly between folders, a powerful search function, a preview feature that should have been part of Windows years ago, and a highly customizable and intuitive interface. Even better, XYplorer offers this to you in a very fast, very light application that doesn't require any installation or make any system or registry changes. Intrigued? Read on.

If you're a fan of tabbed browsing, you already know how to work the tabs in XYplorer! Click between folders, rename them, reposition them, and drag and drop files onto them -- a whole lot easier than using Windows Explorer, that's for sure. You can even create a tab dedicated to a search filter! The Dual Pane makes it easy to move and copy stuff between folders, plus there's Manual Sorting to enable you to view files exactly as you like. And when you quit XYplorer and come back later, your tab configurations are there waiting for you!

Combine this extraordinary functionality with intuitive Tree, List, and Mini-Tree views, and you're all set with XYplorer. The Mini-Tree contains a history of files and folders that you've actually used, so it's easy to jump to something you've been working on. Ever wanted to create a magic button to launch files in your app of choice? Custom Toolbar buttons makes that happen! You can color code your files, tag files, highlight and bold favorite folders, or use the Catalog function to combine folders and items from all over your hard drive, LAN, and the Internet under a single heading. There's even support for file names longer than 260 characters, an impossibility in Windows! Plus, aliases make typing long directory structures into the address bar a thing of the past!

The robust features just keep on coming with XYplorer! Imagine one-click previews of any of your media files, plus multiple (up to 100) level undo/redo for your file operations that persists from session to session. An advanced Recycle Bin that leaves your default Windows Bin in the dust! You can even enable queuing in XYplorer and stack file operation jobs without even waiting for the first few to finish, then continue working as your jobs complete in the background!

The latest and greatest version of XYplorer offers Select Special, which lets you modify selections in one pane based on items in the other pane, synchronous scrolling and sorting of both panes, the ability to bring back accidentally erased selections, item name editing, and a quick way to bump selected files up in the folder hierarchy!

Please, what is or are the best dialog box enhancer/extender(s) on recent versions of Windows?

The excellent DonationCoder Review: Best Open/Save Dialog Box Extenders was written in 2005 and last updated in October 2006.  Many things have changed since then, in particular, new versions of Windows; XP has been replaced by Vista (I have 32-bit Vista) and Vista itself replaced by Win 7.  Some of the programs mentioned in the review have been updated while some seem to have been more or less abandoned.  New ones may have appeared; the author of AcFolders even announced his program here and said that he had taken note of the DC review in making it in AcFolders - new file-open dialog box extender, but it has only one other brief mention on DC that I can see, in Any dialog extenders (like FileBox Extender) for 64-bit Win 7?.  Other DC threads on dialog box extenders include:

I run Listary, the Pro version which has favourite folders, but its main focus is on improved searching through file lists, and it doesn't have a recent folders list.  Development might have stalled, too.  I could go back to PowerPro, but it's not as happy on Vista (at least with UAC On) as it was on XP, and the thought of wrestling with its configuration again is daunting.  Further, neither Listary nor PowerPro support Total Commander like some of the others do, notably Direct Folders.

As I'm going round in circles, I'll repeat the first line: Please, what is or are the best dialog box enhancer/extender(s) on recent versions of Windows?

I run Fanix Software's Hilitext on Vista Home Premium with UAC On, but it doesn't fully work as it did on XP.  Quote from Fanix's Web site:
Hilitext - The super-powered text finder tool

Hilitext is a powerful OS-level text finder tool that works with all Windows programs to help you find what you are looking for easier and faster. Powered with an innovative text highlighting technology, Hilitext automatically scans your screen and highlights every instance of your keywords in all open desktop windows including web pages, e-mail messages and other documents to help you find information more quickly and easily. It continues to highlight all instances of your target terms automatically as you surf from web page to web page or e-mail to e-mail.

Well, it doesn't work properly any more, as can be seen on the screenshots.  The first is on Magic Mail Monitor and the second on the DC forum's Recent Topics page, viewed with Firefox.  Either Hilitext misses things completely, or it messes up the highlighting and/or the text underneath it.  It does seem rather better on text editors, but that's only a limited use.

I think I e-mailed Fanix a long time ago, with no reply.  Is there anything I need to check, or, please, is there an alternative software to do the same job?

Site/Forum Features / List of DC-SMF features?
« on: January 19, 2011, 03:30 PM »
I compose most of my postings in an editor, currently NoteTab Pro.  From time to time I use font effects, lists, URLs etc.  Please, is there a consolidated list of the [codes] that you need for this, including what font faces, sizes, etc. are available?

USB Safely Remove 4.4 final is available now. We have improved user interface, made its icon more nicer, restored Win2000 compatibility and fixed some other bugs. Besides we added one important and frequently requested feature: the ability to power off USB drives after their stopping in Vista and Windows 7. Download the version 4.4 right now or read further about new features.

Note! The license policy for USB Safely Remove has changed since this version. The license will include one or two years of upgrade subscription. However user can still use the program for lifetime and use one license for every computer you own. Of course this change doesn't affect those who already purchased the license with lifetime upgrades. For a limited time licenses with lifetime upgrades are still available to sell. See new pricing on the order page.

Here the SafelyRemove people are giving fair warning (the heads-up came by e-mail)* and still offering true lifetime licenses for a limited time: kudos to them for honourable behaviour.  Compare Upgrading RoboForm from v6 to v7: worthwhile? for user irritation on a poorly-handled change of license policy.

>>Edit 2010-12-27
* Apologies.  It didn't come by e-mail.  USBSR popped up its own message saying a new version was available, did I want to go to the Web site.  So I did.

I just tried updating RoboForm to the 6.10.1, which doesn't (yet) work.  It just brings up the URL but doesn't fill anything.  The installation process loaded the RoboForm page as usual, but didn't say the copy was registered.  Instead, it's showing that they upgraded from v6 to v7, which would be a paid upgrade for me, and fairly expensive, especially as I licenses for two fixed-PC copies of AI RoboForm v6 plus one for portable RoboForm2Go v6.

Has anyone upgraded, and if so, what do you think, please?

Living Room / How do I test router vs. Internet connection?
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:53 PM »
I'm in the UK.  I use a laptop via a wireless router, a US Robotics Wireless MAXg ADSL Gateway, Product Model 809108.

Lately I've been getting poor Internet connections.  Watching the router's status lights; Power ON, wireless transmission ON, ADSL ON, Internet ON; then after a bit the Internet light goes out and I lose connection.  In the last couple of days, I've had all four lights ON, but no connection, except that the Internet light has been flickering a bit, which I assume means a poor connection.  When the Internet light goes out, I usually have to switch the router off and back on again to get it to reconnect.

Please...  how can I test whether the problem is with my router, or with the telephone company/ISP?

I only have one router and one ISP, so I can't easily eliminate one from the other.  If the problem is likely to be the router, what replacement would you suggest?

<sigh>  nearly typed witless for wireless...

Thanks in anticipation!

Living Room / Tracking new books by your favourite authors
« on: August 29, 2010, 11:28 AM »
If you want to check what other books your favourite authors have written, and in particular, keep track of books written in series, try Fantastic Fiction:

Bibliographies for over 30,000 authors.
Information on over 350,000 books. Throughout the site, just click on a book to see its cover picture, description and publication details

Where possible each entry includes author photo, new and forthcoming books, series, novels, anthologies, short stories, awards, links to authors' Web sites, author recommendations, links to searches in UK and US bookshops for the particular author, and "Visitors to this page also looked at these authors" lists.

Sanity check: I don't know who owns and operates this site, so I don't know what degree of authority its entries have.  But it looks right, our local library uses it, and it's a valuable resource for book lovers.

There have been mentions of similar services on DC before, but this seemed a useful up-to-date summary.  The current edition of New Scientist magazine, dated 5 June 2010, No. 2763, has an article entitled Me and my Avatar: Upload your mind and you could live forever, by Linda Geddes.  The complete article is currently (2010-06-08) online as Immortal avatars: Back up your brain, never die.

The third and final page has a box entitled Death and the net: How the web can help you log off gracefully for the very last time... listing the following services:

  • My Last Email
Enables you to leave letters, photos or video messages for friends and family, as well as write your own obituary
  • Deathswitch
Imagine you die with a secret that you longed to reveal. Deathswitch is an automated system that prompts you for your password on a regular basis. If you repeatedly fail to respond, it assumes you have died and emails pre-scripted messages to nominated addresses
  • Legacy Locker
You create a master list of usernames and passwords for all your online accounts and social networking sites. Once your death has been verified by Legacy Locker, the list will be emailed to a named beneficiary
  • Seppukoo
Samurai warriors preferred to commit ritual suicide rather than allow themselves to be captured by enemies. Seppukoo.com enables you to commit "virtual suicide" by deleting your Facebook account - or at least it did until a legal wrangle with Facebook, though the service hopes to be up and running again soon
  • Slightly Morbid
If something terrible happened to you, who would tell your online friends? This service enables users to consolidate all their online contacts, allowing a trusted third party to contact them in the event of your demise

General Software Discussion / Recommend disk imaging software?
« on: June 07, 2010, 03:49 PM »
I'm looking for disk imaging software for use on Vista Home Premium.  The laptop came with Samsung Recovery Solution III, which I used to make the original image before putting anything much on the machine, but I don't know how good it is for regular use.  I've glanced at a few other DC threads and am currently inclined to Macrium, though they don't seem to have a free version any more.

Any thoughts, please?

I have some files and directories/folders with badly corrupted names on my USB HD.  None of my three file managers can delete them.  Please can you recommend a tool that will?

General Software Discussion / Windows shortcut hotkeys broken?
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:22 PM »
If you make a shortcut, then click on Properties, you get a window with several tabs.  The Shortcut tab lets you set a "Shortcut key" hotkey to activate the program.

These hotkeys don't work for me.

I checked with Nir Sofer's ShortcutsMan shortcuts manager, which reported the hotkey set, but pressing the hotkey didn't activate the program.  Nothing happened, though sometimes the foreground application would lose focus.

Do other people have problems with this, and is there a cure?  I'm running Vista Home Premium with UAC On, and routinely a User Account rather than an Admin one.

This problem has got worse recently.  Because I couldn't get hotkeys to work natively I use Hoekey to supply them instead.  This works.  However, I also run Online Armor Firewall.  Until recently I ran with HIPS Off, and things were as acceptable as they ever are with Windows.  I just turned HIPS On, and now it takes ages for the hotkey to operate.  This is particularly important because I mostly use Horst Schaeffer's PopSel to launch programs and use a Hoekey hotkey to pop up the menu, so loading programs is currently maddeningly slow.

I just posted a query about HIPS slowing things down in the Online Armor forum, but can anyone shed any light on the non-performance of the native WIndows hotkey feature?

Thanks...

Copy of an e-mail I just sent to Hyperionics:

I have a single-user license for HyperSnap, so I installed it on my USB stick.  I just upgraded to the most recent version 6.80.01, installing on top of the last one on my USB stick.

1) Installation process thinks you want to install to hard disk, even though the box for portable USB is checked. That is, the Browse for the target  installation directory seems to point to the c:\Program Files etc. and one has to take extra steps to navigate to the USB stick.

2) Installation put a Hyperionics toolbar in IE. I didn't see it ask for this - granted, I may have missed it - but I certainly didn't see it, I absolutely do not want it (I check on new versions using WebSite-Watcher) and it's taken me time and effort to remove it. I'm still not sure I have it completely removed.

Please, don't do this.  I got so angry I've deleted HyperSnap altogether.

I should add, it installed the toolbar for both Firefox and IE.  The Firefox add-on was easy enough to uninstall, though I then had to re-start Firefox to complete it.  The IE toolbar was much harder to get rid of, as mentioned above.  The toolbar seems mostly about checking the latest versions of Hyperionics products.  I'm not prepared to waste screen space on that and resent having to waste time on removing it.  This misbehaviour seems new, I don't remember it from earlier versions.

It also means that the "portable" installation isn't truly portable, because it interferes with whatever host machine you install from, setting Registry keys.  I should haved used Total Uninstall; I didn't expect to have to do that with "portable" software.

And instant (as in, sent e-mail, posted here, went to bathroom, checked here, checked e-mail) response from author Greg Kochaniak;

Hello Robert,
Sorry about this trouble. I tried to not offer and not install the toolbar
when the portable setup is selected, but maybe I made an error in my
programming. The setup asks if you want it for a regular installation. I'll
look into it and fix it if necessary.
The toolbar is removed completely after you uninstall it from Windows
Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs (on Windows XP) or "Programs and
Features" on Vista and Windows 7.

Greg

Can't reply fairer than that (and note that I did say I might have missed the option).

Customers of Boots (the UK pharmacy chain) face interrogation over the origins of their photographs, if those photographs look too "professional."  The company's attitude appears to be that if a photo is good, it can only have been taken by a professional, and a customer wanting a copy is engaged in copyright infringement.

This came to light when Boots refused to print pictures taken by a photography student because she couldn't prove who she was, either with a letter of introduction, or headed notepaper.

Another example of the abandonment of the principle of "innocent until proved guilty," the use of copyright as a blunt instrument for beating money out of people, and insane oversensitivity to legal issues?  A patronising insult to capable photographers in the UK.

General Software Discussion / Undelete utilities?
« on: March 11, 2010, 04:36 PM »
Has anyone any further thoughts on undelete utilities since this 2007 thread, File-Saver (file undeletion utility) $40 off TODAY ?  Specifically, is it really worth paying for undelete utilities, or are the free ones good enough now?

Please, does anyone know of a Firefox extension to copy plain text with URLs in one go?  What I mean is something like this:

Hotlinks for ICT Systems Support Level 2

   Unit 401

<http://www.pat-testing.info>Page 3
Explains the UK legislation covering the legal duty to carry out PAT testing.

<http://www.grisoft.com>Page 26
Grisoft website, from which you can download the free version of the AVG anti-virus.

when the Web page looks like the screenshot below.  The page itself is Heinemann Hotlinks - ICT Systems Support Level 2.

At present I'm using an extension that copies the marked text as HTML, then stripping it in an editor, NoteTab Pro; just wondering if it could be made more seamless.

Boxer Software have just released version 14 of their Boxer editor.  It's a paid upgrade; $29.00 to existing users (if I read it correctly, of any Boxer Software product, not just the editor) or the full price of $59.99 otherwise.

... we're pleased to announce Boxer 14, which adds dozens of new features to the editor you already use and enjoy:

VISUAL WRAP - also known as word wrap - is a passive display mode that wraps long lines to the window width, or to another user-defined margin. This makes it easier to work with files that have just one newline at the end of each paragraph.  The new Soften Line Enders command can be applied to a text file which has unwanted line enders, thereby making the file "flowable" and eligible for Visual Wrap. The Harden Line Enders command does the opposite: it converts soft line enders to hard line enders, effectively "locking" the current on-screen formatting into the file.

USER-DEFINED TOOLBAR ICONS - it's now possible to assign user-defined icons in BMP or ICO format to any of the commands that reside on the toolbar.  A collection of 64 sample icons is provided, and you're free to use others you can find or create.  Some users may wish to assign distinct icons to any User Tools or Macros they've placed on the toolbar, which would otherwise share the same icon.

XML FORMATTING - This new feature can be used to apply and remove formatting from XHTML and other XML-compliant text files. If you've ever opened an XML file and seen one long, flowing line extend off the right edge of the screen, you'll appreciate this new feature.  Format XML adds newlines and indentation intelligently to any XML-compliant file to create a neatly formatted document. Options are provided to control the amount of indent, whether to indent with spaces or tabs, when and whether text and tags should be wrapped, when to suppress newlines, and other formatting nuances.

EFFICIENT LINE NUMBER DISPLAY - Boxer will display its on-screen line numbers using the minimum number of columns possible, expanding and contracting the line number margin automatically if the file's line count grows or shrinks.

... and many more.  See the full list here:

  http://www.boxersoft...re.com/changes14.htm

Please note that Boxer 14 is fully compatible with Windows 7.

I abandoned Boxer mainly because it didn't have text wrap.  $29.00 is quite a lot to pay to get it.  It's a powerful editor, of course, but I'm not a power user  ;)

General Software Discussion / Recommend anti-spyware, please?
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:24 AM »
I run Online-Armor firewall, F-PROT Antivirus, and WinPatrol Plus system monitor.

Do I need any extra anti-spyware/anti-malware protection?  If so, what, please, are the best current recommendations?

Thanks...

Some versions of Windows let you send the text in error message boxes to the clipboard just by focussing the box and pressing Ctrl-C.  Earlier Windows versions were served by Thyante Software's CopyMessageBox, which you could set to make both a screenshot and extract the text. Last time I tried, CopyMessageBox didn't seem to extract text on Vista Home Premium, though it did keep screenshots.

Does anyone know a way to capture such text, please? HyperSnap can do it by TextSnap, but is there an easier way?  (Yes, I know, this is Windows).

General Software Discussion / Vista blocking some Internet access
« on: February 23, 2010, 05:02 PM »
My laptop has the misfortune to be lumbered with Vista Home Premium.  I've been looking at NoteFrog, and it thinks I have no Internet connection.  I also asked HippoEdit to check its Internet version: it said "Connection to Internet could not be established!"

I was running in a user account.  When I changed to the admin account, both worked, Internet connection was made.  But I've also set permissions on both programs to give full control to the user account.  So why can't they access the Internet?  I checked my firewall, Online-Armor, and WinPatrol Plus, and they don't list either program (as far as I can see).

What do I have to do to make my computer do what I tell it to do?

125
Does anyone know a way to encrypt a USB drive, without having to have admin rights to read it again?  As far as I can see, TrueCrypt only works if you either have admin privileges, or if TrueCrypt is already installed on the host machine.  In other words, TrueCrypt isn't truly "portable" as you can't guarantee either situation in a college or library, say.  The TrueCrypt docs point out that it has to install a device driver, hence the need for installation rights, and that admins can "see" what you've been typing, including your passwords.  In fact I'm more interested in securing the drive against students and casual users rather than admins gone to the bad.  I doubt I'd outwit those anyway...

By contrast, AxCrypt, from reading their Web site, seems to work file by file, though at least they offer a portable decrypter.  I'd rather encrypt the whole volume in one go.  Is there a reasonably easy way to do this, please?

Thanks...
