But Norton might have got better (said optimistically), and this freebie NIS could be useful.

I've had lots of history with Norton products and I have had a policy for quite awhile of never letting their software touch my boxes.  However, after some research, I decided to relent and try Norton Online Family to help corral my daughter's Internet use.  Not without trepidation, I installed and configured on three PCs.  Within a week I had removed it, after its filtering did not allow the access it should, it refused to update its settings, and it blocked sites even after it was set to monitor only.

So maybe a leopard can change its spots, and an old dog can learn new tricks, but there are just too many other options...  friends don't let friends run Norton...

To add to what Carol said, don't forget to look on the Volume tab at the options in there and in the Advanced buttons and see if anything looks odd.

this will happen if you do the Ctrl+C while you are in object selection mode

I bet that's it, I'll check it out.

I've had some weird stuff happen recently... I usually want arrowheads at the end of arrows I add, so I always uncheck Start Arrow and check End Arrow.  But the last couple days the arrowheads have been showing up at the start anyway.  Most of the time... sometimes I can exit SSC and start it back and it's fine.

Also it seems like when the arrows go wonky, I can't copy the image to the clipboard - I click on the image and do a ctrl-c and the box says the object was copied to the clipboard, but there's nothing to paste when I'm in the other application.

I've just noticed it on my main work pc (win 7, 64 bit) and just now duplicated it at home.  I don't know that I've used many arrows since I upgraded to 3.04.01 but I know it was working fine at some point before now, I'm just not sure when.

Definitely odd...  maybe I can pull down the previous version to try?  Although I would hate to give up the sweet cursor capture options...

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: 1-action Unzip
« on: April 24, 2012, 06:53 PM »
Install 7-zip and set it in tools/options to associate with zip files.  Then just right click your zip file and you can unzip it right there, unzip to a folder named like the file, etc.

Oh yeah, Haozip does the shell extension thing too (as do probably lots of other compression tools); one of the places I visit suggested trying it, and it seems to be as fast as 7-zip, but with a fancier looking interface.  Of course if you just click-and-extract you don't ever see the interface...

Living Room / Re: List your (wireless) router and experiences
« on: April 19, 2012, 02:44 PM »
I've had/maintained over a dozen routers - Linksys, Netgear, Dlink, Belkin - some on the higher end and some on the lower end - and my experience is that most all of them go bonkers in odd ways within a couple years.  Ports fail, the radio fails, name resolution starts giving bizarre results, etc.  Currently I have a pair of Dlink DIR-615 routers, one at each end of the house, and they have actually lasted well - in fact I ran the cable and installed the second one two years ago, after the first one had behaved itself for two years.

It sounds like your needs are modest so I'd say most any model should suffice; just check first to see if there are any vulnerabilities reported (that goes for replacement software too, google "dd-wrt i know where you live" for example).  I use a separate gigabit switch for everything wired, but given radio speeds and internet link speeds I don't worry about getting gigabit on the router.  (That might come into play if I had more internal-to-internal wireless N traffic instead of internal-to-internet.)

(FWIW, the routers that break end up going in to work to use as dumb switches if some consultant says they need another port right away ;D)

Ymmv, my $.02.

Look at Agent Ransack.  It does not continually index files, it searches on request, so if you would rather have something that eats cpu cycles and memory and disk space continuously then this may not be for you.

That would be cool - I'm not sure how the alternative file managers intercept calls that would normally go to Explorer but anything that can help them do that would be nice  :)

Works in win 7 x64 as well - very handy!  So the app opens Explorer, is there any generic way to have it open the location in an Explorer alternative like xplorer2, xyplorer, or what have you?

Does the software let you do an export to a text format, so you could massage the exports together and merge back in?

I had forgotten how much crap proprietary software Toshiba includes.  Spent much of my time researching what I can discard

So... since you've done the research, which of the Toshiba "value added items" did you do away with?  I still need to do some decrapifying on mine...  ;D

I didn't get these steps at the end... did you use Paypal?  I just clicked the paypal button under the family option and paid by paypal and that was it...?

I did Paypal, and after it said it couldn't quite figure out what I bought, I filled in the name I used in the Winpatrol spot, and then it popped up the code page:

Did you not get a page like this?

I snagged a Family Pack as well, not just because it's good stuff but to encourage more of this sort of thing :-)

Interesting... just saw this thread after your post, and the nncron program looked very tempting.  When I visited the web site, I found that it hasn't been updated since around the time of your first post, in 2008 ;D

Yep, and it works great!  I posted kudos in the other thread (sorry I didn't find it before I started this new one :(...)

You have so much great stuff in here, I should spend a day figuring it all out...

I have seen most often the lowest-performing subsystem is graphics, however with pressure on hard drives due to the flood in Thailand most manufacturers are using fairly slow drives.  It's easier to get a faster hard drive on a laptop (i'm saving up for a hybrid for mine), somewhat harder to upgrade the video...

I love the new cursor options for region captures!     Unmatched flexibility - just awesome work!!!

I'm of two minds (heh - two more than normal I think) about the traveling zoom magnification panel - that's a lot of screen redraws if there's a background image in its path.

But if I beg and plead can we set one of them to default on LeftClick? Pleeese?  ;)

If you had the option, would you want just the simple left-click configurable, or would you want to allow shift, ctrl & alt combinations too?  That would give you four methods with a click or key + click.
