Living Room / Re: Reddit Leaving GoDaddy because of SOPA Support

It infuriates me how bad policy in the US seems to get exported... Monkey see... monkey do...

I'm offended, man! You don't give Indian politicians enough credit to be assholes all by themselves.

BTW Mahesh, I hope you aren't buying the "religious sentiments" line. It's a way to get a toehold into the machinery for future political censorship, pure & simple.

Disclaimer: 3 shots down.

To avoid this problem, avoid mom-and-pop projects that don't take your money! You might call this the anti-free-software movement.

I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't the 1st of April.

Why is everyone doubting this guy? People are so cynical these days.

I feel for you, Jafiq!  :-*

*nosh hands out +1s (don't sue me, Google!) to everyone who's posted*

One of my scarier Google moments was when they introduced chat into their web mail and someone I was trying to avoid messaged me :'(
I was signed in by default, Google had decided who my friends were and who was I to argue? :)

I'm going to disassociate my main gmail ID from any Google service I use - create new, unrelated usernames for each service. I plan to extend this to other non-Google services like Twitter too. People tend to use the same user ID across services for the sake of convenience and it makes it hellishly simple for anyone to connect the dots.

- New: Users can set default file manager now

- Fixed: Mouse lag (mouse hook conflicts with some software)

I've been waiting for these!

Living Room / Re: RIAA Doesn't Like the "Used Digital Music" Business
« on: November 18, 2011, 06:44 AM »
RIAA and all its sliminess aside, Redigi seems somewhat shady to me.

From their press release:
Part of its genius is in its revolutionary technology that transfers an eligible
digital music file from one user to another without allowing multiple copies to exist at the
same time.

So if I buy a music file from an online store and transfer it to multiple music players, back it up to an external HD or online - and then put it up for sale, Redigi in all its genius has the capability to delete the file from all these places? Looks like the RIAA has met its match! Hehehe! Clownfight! I'm lovin it!  :P

100 Essential iPad Tips and Tricks

Thanks. It looks powerful enough to get the job done but would take some doing & would need to be manually integrated into the context menu. I'm hoping there's something with a GUI out there.

338
I frequently remove hearing impaired tags from subtitle files, so regex support is essential.

I currently have to load the subtitle file in my text editor and
replace \[.*?\] with "" (blank)
replace \(.*?\) with ""
save + exit

The process could be a lot quicker (2-3 clicks) if I could add these two search and replace commands to a batch profile that shows up in the system context menu.

Any utility that supports this?

I'm way too late into this thread and it has way too much information for my vodka-shotted brain to digest but there's only one coherent point I want to make: app103 has won my undying respect (fwiw) FOREVER!  ;D

I'm returning a 1TB external WD with bad sectors tomorrow. The warranty still applies so it should be interesting to see how soon I get a replacement.  :)

Living Room / Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
« on: October 29, 2011, 06:17 AM »
This article has some serious WTF elements.

The Most Anal CEO Ever

Even when he was barely conscious, his strong personality came through. At one point the pulmonologist tried to put a mask over his face when he was deeply sedated. Jobs ripped it off and mumbled that he hated the design and refused to wear it. Though barely able to speak, he ordered them to bring five different options for the mask and he would pick a design he liked. The doctors looked at Powell, puzzled. She was finally able to distract him so they could put on the mask. He also hated the oxygen monitor they put on his finger. He told them it was ugly and too complex. He suggested ways it could be designed more simply. "He was very attuned to every nuance of the environment and objects around him, and that drained him," Powell recalled.

I'm going with the "he was delirious" line of thought. :|

Thanks for the heads-up. I updated and it didn't do anything obvious. Not knowing is the scary part. Rolling back and preventing it from updating now.

You could hunt for an older .xpi if you don't find a suitable replacement.

From what I've heard, it could take upto six weeks for the waters to recede.
A 2TB Green that I picked up for around $80 earlier this month, is listed at $150 on newegg.

Pity for Thailand, they already have their share of troubles! :(

And that got lots of hits, including this very discussion in DC.  So perhaps DDG doesn't support the +?

It does, try a simple query that's sure to get hits with a plus. Also, the second query I listed has a plus in it.

dog vaccination swelling +betnovate

[I feel the need to explain :P - Sparky routinely gets a bump after his shots, I was 99% sure the vet has prescribed Betnovate for it, but wanted confirmation.]

I initially thought DDG didn't support the + operator, but that's not the case. I'm sure the difference is not that big, still, it's enough to stop me from using it.

Edit: Funny! If I just swap words and turn the query into:
dog swelling vaccination +betnovate  - I get hits.

Apparently, it's the word order that's important but I can't find any place to toggle that setting. Does NOT inspire confidence!

Edit2: More weirdness: Clicking the query (in this post) from Firefox doesn't get hits but on the iPad it does.

Duckduckgo has 0 results for a search query that got 200,000+ hits on Bing and 400,000+ on Google.  :-\
I love the minimalist interface + customizability but I'd feel like I was constantly missing out on stuff if I made it my primary search engine.

Bing seems like the only viable alternative, ATM.
