How about a zero-distraction editor like Dark Room (a Writeroom clone), for a start?

dark_room.gif

I personally think it makes a lot more sense to boot into DOS and start one of the bygone era editors. There was a geeky charm to those babies the MS Word just can't replicate. Switch off your cellphone (Good luck!) get those phones off the hook and you're all set!

Solid advice from Matt. I have seen several friends/relatives lose money at the stock exchange which they view as some big get-rich-quick arena. If you must gamble you may as well go to the races, horses are more fun to watch than stockbrokers. The trick is to not speculate but get in for the long run. It seldom hurts to invest in Blue Chip stocks and then keep it there.

Thanks for the description Ralf. Sadly, most of my knowledge of Halloween can be attributed to John Carpenter's 1978 cult classic. ;D

General Software Discussion / Oscar - Subtitle Download Client
« on: October 30, 2007, 03:12 AM »
Since there was some discussion relating to subtitles earlier, I just thought I'd give subtitle users a heads-up about Oscar, a really nice subtitle download client that makes an otherwise tedious task much easier.

I wonder how he'd fare if he fixed the price to USD 9.00, which is what most people seem to think is a good bargain for the software. 40 Euros is over six times that amount and not a very good pricing model to compare against.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: MP3 player with copy/move feature
« on: October 27, 2007, 08:06 PM »
Using Foobar2000 you can drag and drop songs to (another/several other) tabs - you can then select several/all songs under a tab and run a file operation like copy or move on them. Just to clarify, tabs are basically playlists and when you drag-drop a song it's replicated on the target playlist.

No, really! Cross my heart and all that...

My Windows installs would probably average less than 6 months before I started using imaging software. The current image has been built on + backed up + restored over 20 times since the initial install :)

Living Room / Re: How do you tag (or even organize) your files?
« on: October 25, 2007, 02:41 PM »
I like to think I'm organized but I can see I'm out of my depth here with you super-organized dudes.

Anyway, just to share...

I personally have two ways, as an X2 user I can color code files and even folders depending on any kind of attribute or metadata so it's only limited by the imagination.
I use a few tags that I set in the file comments, rather than filenames coz I prefer to keep the original filenames.
x2 lets me:
1. add/edit comments in bulk
2. display comments in details view (though I see no need for this coz I don't have an overly complicated system of tags and color coding is good enough, not to mention a lot of fun to eff with  ;))
3. search on comments.

Clipboard01.jpg

If I want to rate a bunch of music files (1-5), I just rate them as they play in Winamp and then batch edit the comments from within winamp using the ml functions, voila! - the files immediately show up with their rating colors in x2. The ratings can be imported back if winamp ever loses its data.

Putting your tags right into the filenames is definitely a safer/more reliable way, though if the names get too long it may actually end up being counterproductive if you're seeing a whole lot of files at once (not that you'd see that many to start with if they have such long names!). My method targeted mainly at comments is not as robust or as effortless as I would like it to be, but it serves the purpose. And colors, did I mention colors!!  :-*

Another relatively simple favorite of mine is to have ahk text replacements for current date+time, this way say if a friend regularly sends me pix I just have one main folder for the person and sub folders named something like "20071026 005818", I like the Japanese date format coz it's best for sorting, v.sharp those guys! :)

General Software Discussion / Re: foobar...honestly...WTF?! WTF?!
« on: October 25, 2007, 05:55 AM »
I think the beauty of Foobar lies in its simplicity and speed. What's the point of downloading something that's meant to be lean and mean and then pig it up to resemble an ugly looking winamp mod? Why not just run a retro (pre-bloat) Winamp version instead? I've actually started using playlists (the drag-drop functionality is awesome!) since I started using FB2K... integrates directly with my iPod too in the simplest possible way and  I just _love_ the fact that the damn thing opens nearly as effortlessly as Notepad on my system.  :-*

Tried the 0.9.5 beta and didn't particularly care for its look out of the box, other than that I'm a fanboy!

Handy little utility, ak_!  :)

A couple of tweaks that come to mind:

1. If a file has periods in the base name, the folder name gets truncated [everything_beyond_this.will_be_aborted.txt]

2. Extensionless files - not that these are very common but it'd be nice if they could be handled anyway.

Thanks.

nosh: by Visual SVN, do you mean Ankh? Friend of mine has had bad problems with it, and I've had some minor glitches myself - plus it slows down VS startup time humongously.

What Tinjaw said.
Ankh was next on my list to try but after I gave VSS a shot I really didn't feel like bothering. Glad I didn't. :)

Neat on removing the close button, nosh. I'll bite. How did you do it?

A combination of MenuX which adds buttons with additional functionality ("incompatible" since the last several (2.x) versions of FF) & Menu Editor (lets you hide conventional menus) if memory serves correctly, coz I did this way back and haven't touched these extensions since. The screenie depicts the top of my display with FF active - the title bar and menus are hidden, not cropped out of the image.

And thank you for your post Ralf, coz I was wondering the same thing about compression vs efficiency and the downside (if any) to it all and you've shed some light on these matters.

MrCrispy, I'm with you on never shutting FF down, I've even customized it by removing the close button and replaced it with minimize so I don't close it by accident, one of the best decisions I've made, in retrospect. Even so, I do have to start FF atleast once a day and any time I can shave off its long (to put it mildly) loading time is a good thing. From what I hear FF3 is an even bigger memory hog, now _that's_ an achievement!

General Software Discussion / Unique way to make Firefox load faster
« on: October 22, 2007, 01:47 PM »
This one's apparently been out there for long but I couldn't easily find a reference to it on DC.

The tip basically asks us to use upx to compress *.exe and *.dll in the main Firefox (installation) folder and *.dll in the "components" and "plugins" subfolders.
I haven't timed it but I'm pretty certain Firefox actually does load faster after I upx'd the files.

If any of you go for it please note down your FF load time before compression so you can observe the difference and post your results here.

SVN does seem to be the tool of choice but I've cursorily tried the Tortoise SVN + Visual SVN combo and then VSS and as far as intuitiveness is concerned VSS wins. There are developers who have used it for years without a problem. I don't know if it was Visual SVN mucking up but I had some real issues going back and forth old/new versions in my test runs. VSS did exactly what I wanted/expected it to. It has the rather annoying quirk about discarding all changes if I rollback but there are a couple of workarounds for that. These are just my first impressions which are very possibly faulty.

#2 = nice to know.

If I'm not mistaken you have a 2GB pagefile. Have you considered disabling it completely to squeeze that little bit more out of your system or do you think you'll hit the 2GB limit occasionally?

Update: Swapped out the 512 MB sticks for 2 x 1GB. The step up in performance, if any, is negligible. Was really tempted by the Core 2 Duo 2.6 upgrade *drools* but couldn't go for it, so was feeling a bit let down.  Treated myself to a nice 19" LCD monitor as a consolation prize. :-*

I swapped out both sticks of RAM (512MB each) and replaced them with two 1 gig sticks.

That's exactly what I plan to do. I always have around 15 icons in the system tray, I don't really need to run too many power-hungry apps side by side but I've done that and the system holds just fine. On the (rare) occasion that I fire up a 3D game, I tend to shut down as many other programs as I can - this is something I'll probably be doing even after upgrading, to spare the CPU. But I'd rather get it done and stop wondering than not and keep rationalizing to myself that I have x00 megs of free RAM. Like you, what I really need is a dual core CPU running alongside. I believe Mr.Hyde just had an idea and Dr.J seems to be playing along. :)

Everything just *feels* more stable, more responsive and MORE! When I upgraded this laptop from 512MB to 1GB RAM the diference was not nearly so profound (I was actually a bit disappointed).

That's really strange coz you're actually utilizing over 512 MB so the jump from 512 TO 1 GB should have (theoretically) made a substantial impact. The tests on Tom's Hardware attest to this. And you'd have 400 MB of free RAM even if you hadn't upgraded so I'm wondering how much the placebo factor is actually contributing here. Did you swap out your old RAM or just add a stick or two?

Edit: Reread the first page of this thread and I think I'm going to go for it. Nothing much to lose really. :)

Thanks Darwin... it depends on whether your RAM was maxed out before the upgrade, I suppose.
Knowing myself, I'm aware I probably won't be able to resist going for it, I'm just looking for one good reason to do it. My system's functioning pretty smoothly in general and I've had teething pains almost every time I've added new hardware to the box so I'm a bit circumspect. The results posted at the Tom's Hardware link I posted don't do anything to help.

I'm running 1GB on a P4-300MHz. The RAM never seems to get maxed out, it's always the CPU that seems to be the bottleneck. Would it make sense for me to go for 1 GB more considering I'm not even using my current capacity to its full potential? Will XP or any apps behave differently if they detect considerably more RAM?

On a somewhat related note the only sluggish apps are Winamp (hardly used since I discovered Foobar2000) and Firefox (42 extensions  :-[, but none of them unused.) FF consumes something like 80-140 MB RAM on average, is there some way I can actually get it to use more and speed up?

Edit: This article is an interesting read. It recommends 2GB for "heavy users" but their benchmark graphs show a marginal difference in performance between 1 and 2 GB. Some unexpected results too - like, it's faster decompressing a large RAR file with 512 MB RAM than with 2GB. :)
