In that case, I'll stick with AVG Free. It seems that a <a href="https://www.donation...99.msg84129#msg84129">conclusion</a> I came to some time ago is quite true : A decent Anti-Virus Program without strings attached is becoming harder to find.

Also, AntiVir Free and AVG Free have both started to show advertisements upon each database update.

General Software Discussion / Re: A Firefox Lover's Guide to Opera
« on: December 31, 2007, 09:16 AM »
I have Opera installed to test out new sites I create. While Opera is faster than any other browser I've come across, I don't find it to be lighter than Firefox as far as RAM usage goes. Both of them consume well over a 100 MB of RAM with a dozen tabs open. I like several of Opera's features such as inbuilt torrent downloading (though I'd still probably prefer utorrent). I feel that Opera could seize a much larger share of the browser market if it went Open Source. I feel it still cannot match Firefox's customizability out of the box due to its closed source nature.

And of course, there are lots of sites that don't work properly with Opera for some reason. Gmail used to be among them.

Living Room / Re: What's the best registry cleaner? Ask Leo says: none
« on: December 31, 2007, 09:07 AM »
Another vote for Regseeker from me. I've tried using jv16 Power Tools in the past, but while its a good program, its risky and deletes several important registry keys. Well, its screwed up my PC before. I've also used the registry cleaner on WinXP Manager, which is likewise, very powerful, but risky. The best method is to use applications that can simply be unarchived and run and only create .ini files. Thinstall applications are also another option, but Thinstall costs a lot of money. Other good registry cleaners I've come across include EasyCleaner and CCleaner's Registry Clean Function.

I've heard many tech site authors strongly recommend registry mechanic. I tried the demo, but did not find it to be all that impressive for a shareware application. Any other dc users tried it?

Does anyone know how long it will stay free or is it just a one year subscription?

FARR is really starting to appeal to me with all these plugins. I wish someone made a plugin for foobar as well.

White text on a black background, guess I'm in the minority then.

I tried searching for these threads but could not find them except for the first one. I guess this must be a joke then.

General Software Discussion / Re: Launchy 2.0... and something else
« on: December 23, 2007, 05:32 AM »
I agree with tide. I was using Launchy till recently when it asked me to upgrade to version 2. Several Version 1 skins are not compatible with version 2. And its now much slower to start up when I press the hotkey. I've been using slickrun alongside launchy for about 2 months now and have decided to stick to slickrun in the future.

Of course, I am also waiting for FARR to hit stable.

If you use <a href="http://www.snapfiles...m/get/tweakuixp.html">TweakUIXP</a>, there is a setting to prevent applications from stealing focus. Instead the window will blink a fixed number of times (you set the number) in the taskbar to alert you.

I tried using Slickrun, which is actually a program launcher like FARR. But when I press Win + J it gives a scratch pad called Jot which saves to the hard disk automatically after each key stroke. Not as full featured as evernote, but okay for quick and dirty work.

General Software Discussion / Re: Keyboard Navigation for Google
« on: December 12, 2007, 07:18 PM »
Neat work. On Firefox, I use <a href="http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6575">Google Ctrl+Arrow</a>, which loads as a Greasemonkey script. Haven't tried it on Opera.

I was thinking the white snorting rather than the brown drinking kind, though :)

(iirc the drinking kind has pH close to stomach acid levels?)

Of course, its the other coke. ;) Sometimes the context of the sentence just misses me.

I don't know the pH of coke, I was guessing it would be around that of a weak organic acid like acetic acid. I just avoid soft drinks and caffeine altogether, which makes me different to most other computer folk I know.

Hm.

Almost small enough to make putting RFID tags in coke viable... keeping track of your clients, eh? :)

The digestive system is a nasty place, few things (living or otherwise) would survive in there. The stomach has a pH of battery acid and is likely to dissolve the plastics on this thing.

General Software Discussion / Re: Top 3 programs you use
« on: November 18, 2007, 06:56 AM »
Not including programs that run in the background,

1. xplorer2
2. K-Meleon
3. GreatNews

None of those 3 are on my computer anymore. Its now :

1. Total Commander
2. Keepass
3. Firefox

and will probably change again by early next year as I am trying out alternate shells.

Living Room / Re: Laptop or Desktop — which are you?
« on: November 17, 2007, 01:50 AM »
Depends on the situation. I own both laptops and desktops and use them for various needs. When I'm away in another country, I prefer laptops since they are easy to carry around for presentations and meetings. But, I agree that nothing beats having a large 19" screen and 4GB RAM with a good graphics card for gaming. I never really understood the rationale for a gaming laptop, such as those made by alienware.

Living Room / Re: Is the new Zune upgrade really an upgrade?
« on: November 17, 2007, 12:20 AM »
Eh, the Cowon is only 8GB at best, which sells for $ 219. IPod is available in 60 GB models, even the older ones. When using flac, more space is needed to carry the same number of songs. I think that the only way I can be convinced to buy a cowon is if they make 60 GB models. 8GB is far too less for flacs.

What's the Best? / Re: Package Management for Windows
« on: November 17, 2007, 12:20 AM »
I think this is as good as any to explain one reason why apt-get, yum, etc. work. It is not apt-get, yum or any other program if its nature. It isn't even because they are *nix-based. The only reason it works is, well... It's the data, stupid!

tinjaw, while the *nix level of close integration will be hard to achieve, what I actually want to achieve is far simpler. I just need

1) A system to check for new software updates and inform me
2) The system should take me to the corresponding page and let me download the programs
3) It should show me the list of add/remove programs and let me uninstall what I don't want
4) It should list programs based on category rather than as a single long list

The neat thing about *nix package management is the way it handles dependencies and automatically gets the required modules to run the program as well. I am not looking for this feature since most windows programs automatically check and tell you if any other tools (e.g. JRE .NET Framework) are needed.

The grouping of packages is already done by some of the tools listed above. I am having exams over the next month, so I will probably write a review on this by early January, unless someone else wants to do it.

I didn't know about Cowon, they don't seem to advertise much. Thanks for the information; I will be looking into their products now.

I don't seem to have it and I just updated my database.

How about someone Diggs the real list?

I don't mind digging, even though I have no respect for Digg any more as its proven to be nothing more than a breeding ground for fan boys/girls of various OSes.

I'd suggest StumbleUpon and good old fashioned links from various blogs/sites to improve the pagerank.
