Living Room / Recommendations for small, 4-port USB hub?
« on: December 15, 2008, 01:42 AM »
Can anyone recommend a USB hub for me?  I don't know what to look for and want to make sure to get a good one.  This one from newegg seems to be good:
D-Link 4-port USB hub

Thanks!

LaunchBar Commander / Need undo!!
« on: December 04, 2008, 12:04 PM »
I just accidentally deleted my entire tree, and there's no undo to recover.  I looked at all the backup files, but I can't seem to figure out how to open them.  I go to "open" and double-click on one of the dated backup files and nothing happens.  I'm a little worried.  Please help, thanks.

Tag&Rename has long been one of my favorite programs of all time.  But their newest "release candidate" took out a much beloved feature of min:  check box selection.  There are two modes in the program: you can select the files like you would in a regular Explorer type application, by using ctrl and shift to select multiple files; or you can do it with check boxes.  I always preferred the check boxes because you can select a group of files, then click around to a bunch of other files, or even within your selection, without losing your initial selection set.  Without the check boxes, you lose your set once you click elsewhere.  It's much less productive, but probably more intuitive to normal Windows users.  The option was always there, which mode you wanted.  In the latest version, they took it out.  Why?  I don't know.  You never remove features, you only add!  I'm hoping it's just a mistake, they didn't even document it their version history, so I'm really hoping that's the case.  My only complaint about the program is that there's no good way to contact the authors.  They are not that responsive to emails and there's no discussion group or anything either.  But I still love the program.  Best audio file tagger/renamer ever made, no doubt.

I can't figure out how to do this.  I have an Excel Workbook with multiple sheets.  They all have the same columns, but the number of rows is different in each column.  I'd like to, in a separate sheet, put all the rows from all the sheets on top of one another in one long list.  How do I do this?  I want the big list to be live-linked to the other cells, I don't want to simply copy them.  Any changes to the original cells will be shown in the big sheet.  The big sheet is simply a summary sheet for display purposes.

The ranges in each sheet is named using the Named Ranges feature.  And I've somehow figured out how to make the ranges dynamic (I don't remember how).  That means whenever a row is added to a sheet, the named range automatically adds that row to the range.

I tried using pivot tables, but I'm not very advanced with them.  I also tried consolidating the ranges.  The problem with both of these seem to be that it assumes you want to do some calculation on the data, like summing them or averaging them.  I don't want to do that.  I simply want to just copy the cells and combine them all in one big list.  No calculation, or function or anything like that.

Thanks!!

General Software Discussion / SideSlide...does anyone use this?
« on: November 06, 2008, 04:40 PM »
Anyone use this program (SideSlide)?  I'm trying to get my mind around what it's supposed to be used for, and I can't quite figure it out.  To me, it seems to be some kind of desktop icon and launcher/organizer, but can do other things as well.  I was very curious about it, but I can't find a need for it.  For launching programs, I don't think it can beat mouser's FARR or LBC, and for the other things it does like place notes, alarms, reminders and stuff, there are several programs better for that.  I don't know.  It's definitely a complicated program that seems geared towards powerusers.  I'm curious how people use it.

[edit] Added link.  Sheesh.

I have downloaded a large wmv file that I am trying to cut a segment out of.  Every program I've tried using that has worked for me in the past (Boilsoft, asfbin) gives me the same error "instruction referenced memory memory could not be read" (something like that) and the program crashes.  Why does this happen?  Is there anything else I can do?  I need to cut the so it will be a reasonable size to post on my website.  Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Help me with MS Word styles
« on: October 22, 2008, 02:12 PM »
I don't understand how to use Word styles well (Word 2003):

I'm trying to create a list type styles, and I can get things set up as far as if I want a numbered style or bullet style or no symbol (just appropriate indentations).  However, I can't get any kind of formatting to work with my list styles.  I create a new list style, I set all the formatting as far as bold, underline, etc.  But when I select a group of text and apply the style, none of the formatting change.  The only change that happens is the proper indentations and stuff.  How to I get the formatting to automatically apply?  Even when I go back to modify the style, I see that all the formatting is shown properly, but it never ever gets applied to the actual text when you apply the style.  This has been frustrating me for weeks.

I'm trying to maximize my efficiency in following all this financial stuff by reading the Wall Street Journal.  So, this involves a bunch of things mentioned in the title, mainly referrer links using Google News, and Website Watcher.
So, I've set up Website-Watcher to monitor the search results for WSJ articles.  That works all nice and fine.

Now, for those that don't know, WSJ has much of their content available as Subscription only.  However, if you  use Digg or Google News to go to the articles, then they are free for all (using those referrers).  Now, there's this very annoying problem I've noticed:  the links from Google News to the articles still ask for a subscription more often than you'd like.  What's the deal?  Is WSJ purposefully feeding the wrong info to Google News so it won't work?  It works most of the time, but I'm running into this problem several times a day, it's annoying.

The other way to do it is to snoop the ref, using a plugin for Firefox, but that's kind of wrong.  Snooping the ref always works for digg, but not for google news.  Something is weird there.  Besides I really want to use Website Watcher to do this, so Firefox is out of the question.

I have a feeling this is a problem on WSJ's end, not google news or website-watcher.  If anyone can confirm or suggest a fix, please respond.  THanks.

General Software Discussion / Does The Bat! have a help manual?
« on: October 13, 2008, 07:38 PM »
Is there a help manual available for the Bat! (email software)?  The Help that comes with the program is pretty minimal and I can't find anything else on their website.  There are a lot of features that are not explained at all, and even worse, there are exact phrases and words in the options and settings that are nowhere mentioned in the help manual that comes with the program (if you do a search).  That's a little silly.

For example, I wanted to know what a Common Folder was and what all the options are, but there's no documentation for it anywhere.  Cmon now.  Am I supposed to figure everything out by trial and error?

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / The Superior Software List

The Superior Software List

I have finally begun work on the list of software I recommend.  I modeled it after Zaine's list, and since he doesn't 'do' Windows software anymore, I hope you can rely on my picks as trustworthy recommendations.

PS I know I already posted this in my general website announcement here, but that thread is ultra boring, I know.  This software list is especially dedicated to the members here.  Thanks to DC for hosting my site also.  This is a great place.

Well, it's that time for me again.  I built my current desktop back in December 2001.  It's my workhorse, it's lasted fine all this time, but maybe it's time for a new one.  I know I need to either reinstall XP or get a new desktop PC.  The reason for this is that I upgraded my AV software and it's not working due to some conflicts and I can't figure it out because I have sooooo much software installed.  I want to start fresh.

I haven't kept up with hardware, I rarely do.  What is the latest cpu specs?  Usually with the CPU, I don't get the very latest because it's price is so much, but I'll get the highest priced mid-level chip.  Basically, I look at the prices and get the one right before the big jump in price for the latest-greatest chip.  That usually ensures me a good 5 years or more of solid performance.  I'll probably get a 1TB Seagate drive.  Video cards I know nothing about...I'll just get something decent.  I don't do anything graphic intensive.  Do you guys normally use the built in motherboard sound cards now?  I have my pro sound card for my musician stuff, but for regular audio, should I just use the motherboard audio?

How about cases and fans?  Can anyone point me to a good tutorial about how to place fans on cases and what cases are good?  I never do this part right, I just stick fans around.  There's gotta be a method to it.

General Software Discussion / How do you manage your email?
« on: September 04, 2008, 06:34 PM »
What a great question, right?  I am very curious how all of you experienced users manage your boat loads of email.  I want to hear the whole philosophy: rules, filters, tags, categories, flags, whatever you use to sort through the volume.

As much of a computer nut as I am, you'd think I have a solid organizing philosophy for email.  I really don't.  I have a bunch of rules setup, but now that I think about it, it's kind of chaotic and not very efficient.  So I'm wondering how you guys do it.

What happens to incoming mail?  Do you archive, do you delete when you're done?

Personally, I haven't deleted anything (that wasn't spam) since 1996.  Email is personal history, I keep it all.  But I should organize it better and it should be more automated.

Also, if you know of any good url's to articles already written about this, please share!

After dealing with Novell Groupwise for the past 3 years, this week my work finally switched to Outlook 2007.  And I couldn't be happier.  Using Groupwise was a truly miserable experience, and that program is an absolute embarrassment.  Let me repeat...absolute embarrassment.  No company on the level of Novell should be putting out a product that miserable.  It seriously feels like something out of Windows 3.1.  And I've never been a fan of Outlook, having been a long time Pegasus Mail user and currently a The Bat! user, but Outlook 2007 is infinitely better than Groupwise.

In fact, chalk it up to ignorance, but Outlook 2007 is quite nice!  It's very powerful, pretty customizeable, I think the GUI is nice.  I really don't have a problem with it.  If our company is willing to pay for it and the Exchange servers, then I'm happy...very happy with it.

General Software Discussion / "Open With" alternative for Windows
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:06 AM »
I was wondering if there existing such a thing as an "Open With" alternative software for Windows?  I bet there is one (there's an alternative to everything else, why not this?).

I have no idea how the open with option in the right-click context menu in Windows gets its choices from, but often they are stupid choices or illogical ones.  And there's no way for me to configure them.  Is there something out there that offers the user a little more flexibility or customizeability?

I'm sure a lot of us have experienced the classic struggle between having restricted rights on your computer (on a large network) and trying to have software run correctly.  Is it possible to restrict access to users, yet have everything functioning properly?  I know, for the most part, all of the major software applications will function fine in a restricted rights environment, like Microsoft Office, etc.  However, all those little programs that we powerusers like to use will not necessarily work fine, and it becomes a big headache for the IT to try to fix all of your little problems with, say, programs like FARR or Direct Folders, or other little gadgets.

Of course, with full Admin Rights, there would be no problem.  With the restrictions, however, there are usually restrictions to writing and/or modifying files in certain locations like the "Program Files" directory.  And, I know, settings should be in the Documents and Settings location, but sometimes they are not.  My question is, what is the best way to have all these little programs working fine, not giving IT a headache, and still have restrictions on your computer?  What about updates?  I have to call for support every time a program releases a minor update?  The response will be the update is no big deal, so don't install it.  But that's stupid, I like to keep my programs updated.

I bring this up because this problem keeps coming up at work.  We beg to have certain productivity tools installed in our computer.  But IT doesn't want to approve it because they don't know if it's a "good" program or not...but the real reason is that they just don't want to deal with it.  We finally get our way and get the program.  Then, some things change, let's say the network is updated and that little productivity tool got broken for whatever reason and needs a reinstallation.  Now, the IT will say that "see, we told you it's not a good program."  But that's not really the problem.  If there was full access to the computer, there would be no problem.

I feel this whole admin rights thing gets out of hand.  I mostly feel that IT prefer to not give rights to users because they are lazy.  You see, if they give users full power and flexibility to deal with their computers, they will make mistakes and there will be more errors to fix.  So, instead, they just don't allow anything.

I was just using RegNow to buy something, and there's a $7 charge (optional, but default included) for "Extended Download Service".  I'm wondering what this is, so I click on the info for it and it says:
Because Not Everything Goes As It Should.

Think of this as your digital safety net for those unexpected occurrences - like your hard drive frying or a virus infection. EDS means that with the purchase of your digital product, we'll keep a copy of your file for ONE FULL YEAR. You'll gain peace of mind knowing that we have your program stored and ready for you to download again [for FREE] at your convenience once your computer is up and running again.

A little extra insurance on your order to keep your products safe? Why not!

For full terms and conditions, click here

What the heck is this mumbo jumbo?  I'm an intelligent, literate person and that explanation makes little sense to me.  They keep a file for me?  What file?  My registration code?  My confirmation email?  What could they possibly keep that I can't just email or contact the company I'm buying from and get it from them (in case there was a problem)?

Seems fishy to me.  Keep an eye out people for this when you buy from regnow.  I'm sure most of the people here do anyway.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to manage some personal content in a well-organized website, so feel free to check it out.

I'm using WordPress with the Mimbo theme, which is a magazine style layout.  I like that much better because I don't really care for the chronological presentation of blogs.  I just want to present content like a newspaper or magazine would, with a better visual flow.  Besides, I don't think I'll have enough material to present in a chronological fashion.

Thanks to mouser and special thanks to gothi[c] for the generosity and assistance.

Today on Bits Du Jour, I discovered a new audio tagger software called Jaikoz Audio Tagger.  Now this is a software category that I know pretty well, and I still insist that the best one I've ever tried is Tag & Rename, which I've been using very happily for years now.  When I first joined DC, there was an interesting discussion about this program called the Godfather, but despite its powerful featureset, it was too complicated to use.  After all, we're just talking about an audio tagger, not a freaking programming language.

Anyway, this Jaikoz seems very interesting.  It takes tagging to another level, where it can identify the files on your computer with some kind of musical fingerprint ID from a couple of websites I had no idea about.  I haven't tried it yet, but it seems cool.

After viewing the demo, I don't think it will rename Tag&Rename, but it may be a complementary software by using it to automatically tag a bunch of files (unattended) and then I can use Tag&Rename to put the final touches on the tags and organize the files in the right location (I'm very anal about my tagging, I've turned it into a sort of science).

If anyone has any thoughts on this program, please write about it here.  Thanks.

Introduction and Recap
This is an update to my 2005 review that is titled "Casual User Review" and located at the following link:
Initial 2005 Review

I am still proud to say that I still use the program on a casual basis.  What I mean by this is that the program has a lot of features and options and can do very specific things, but I don't use them all.  MLO is essentially a fancy To-Do list.  That is the simplest way to describe it.  However, it takes the idea of a todo list and packs in a feature set that will allow you to really break free from the traditional checkbox task list.  So, I'll let other users comment more on the intricate features of MLO and I will stick to explaining, on a general macro level, why this program is so useful even for the casual user.

In the past few years, I have had the need to find software to really organize all of my life's information.  For me, it's a neverending quest of trying out several PIMs, notetakers, ToDo list programs, calendars, file indexers, etc.  A lot of programs will try to combine two or more of these functions (which I'm not a fan of).  Now, these To-Do programs are a bit of a touchy subject because so many programs include a task list in their program's features almost as an afterthought or just because it seems like the right thing to do.  You will rarely find a calendar program without a task scheduler.  The same is true for most email suites.  PIM software will almost always have a task list of some sort.  The point is, most people will rarely go out of their way to find a good To-Do program because they probably already have  a few on their computer.  Unfortunately, most of these programs are nearly as efficient and wonderful as MLO is.  If I may generalize, they are just lists with checkboxes, flags and priorities, and some kind of scheduling function.

As I mentioned in my first review, MLO's most distinguishing feature is the automatically generated To-Do list that is distinct from the traditional To-Do list that the user manually sets up with whatever hierarchy and structure that pleases him.  The automatic list takes the information from the overall manual list and organizes it, using the rules and priorities that you have specified, into a dynamic list that is ordered by importance.  In 2005, I thought that I would be using this automatic list 90% of the time, and rarely glancing at the complete list.  You see, when you have a lot of different projects and many subtasks in each project, you don't want to spend too much time thinking about which one has to be done at this particular moment.  So that's where the automatic list is extremely useful.  As long as you trust the information you previously entered in, you can be sure that the automatic list is ordered correctly and you just go down the line doing whatever you have to do.  Also, because it's dynamic, as soon as a task is completed, or the next day comes, the list will update to show the new order of things to do.

It is now 3 years later, and I have found myself using the complete outline view more than I would have anticipated in 2005.  Again, you have to remember that I am a casual user.  There are times that even though the automatic list shows what I SHOULD be doing, sometimes I don't necessarily feel like following it.  So, I'll just pick something from the regular outline for whatever reason (it's easier or I'm just being lazy, whatever).  The point is, I don't completely ruin the benefits of using a program like this by using it a little out of context like that.  The automatic list is still there and it will adjust to whatever changes are made, even if they were done "out of order".  Of course, this is not unique to MLO, most task list programs will be able to accommodate any order of task completion.  The difference is that these programs don't have the automatic list that presents a trustworthy order of tasks.

There is one thing I want to point out that I never did in my first review, and that is the auto-backup feature of MLO.  With any kind of personal information software, it is important not to lose your information (it can be disastrous).  So, most of these softwares come with some way to backup files within the program itself.  I can honestly say that the implementation used by MLO (controlled by two options called "Backup" and "AutoArchive") is the best I have ever seen on a small-scale program like this.  In fact, I have recommended it to a few software developers specifically over the years to show them how to do it "right".  The reason why it is so great is because it is very flexible and customizable, and can practically guarantee that you won't lose any information.  You can indicate where to store backup files, how often to store backup files, what to do with backup files after a certain period of time, what to do with all the old tasks that have been completed.  I just wanted to point it out as it is a subtle thing that is probably not mentioned much.  See the screenshot:
Screenshot_20080111-080929.png     Screenshot_20080626-133930.png

New Features
Onto the new features of MLO.  I'm very glad to see a lot of neat and useful additions to the automatic To-Do list.  One of my complaints from previous versions was that I always had to switch back and forth between the Notes and Properties tab.  Most of the time, I am using the Notes and the General Properties section.  Switching back and forth between the two was always a little inconvenient for me.  Now, I'm very glad that all of the sections can be ordered manually.  Even though the Notes have their own tab, they have always been included in the Properties tab also.  I guess if you have a ton of notes, you would want to use the Notes tab specifically because you have more space to view in there.  However, I've never had that many Notes, so it's much more convenient to have everything in one place, and have the Notes on top.  This is my current setup and I am very pleased with it.  I can only assume that some more serious powerusers will have more notes and might fiddle around with the other properties more intricately that I do.

The other fantastic new feature is the filter in the To-Do list.  Even though the list is already automatically ordered, it can be further customized to exclude items that you don't necessary want to deal with now.  Also, the "Places" field was changed to be titled "Contexts".  This is kind of important because specific tasks can be assigned to different categories.  In my case, as a supervisor, I'm not actually the one doing all of the tasks in my list.  So I can filter my list according to see a specific person's current To-Do list.  So I used to use the "Places" field to really mean "People", but "Contexts" is much better because it can be used for anything you desire.  More importantly, the list can be filtered using any of the task properties and even has a sophisticated rule-based option also.  This is all a bit much for me, and I mostly just use the Contexts filter.  Again, you can use MLO as simply or as intricately as you need to, and the options are never too overwhelming for a simple user like me.  There are examples of other software where the amount of options prevents a user from using it in a simple way.

The other relatively recent feature I like is the new search box.  This is a general search box in the upper right-hand corner of the program and you can search your entire database for specific terms.  It comes in handy often when you can't remember where you put what where and your outline is complicated with long notes and so forth.  Additionally, it is a search-as-you-type box, and as many of you know, that is a personal fetish of mine.  (See my DC blog where I overly analyze several applications' implementations of this kind of searching).

This is also very minor, but I'm glad to see that the scroll bar now works better.  Before, the window of the properties pane didn't actually scroll until the mouse button was released.  Now it scrolls as you pull the mouse.  Not a big deal, but good.

The screenshots below show off the new features I mentioned above:
Screenshot_20080626-110233.png
Screenshot_20080626-113440.png

Another useful feature that has recently been added (and "undocumented" according to the author) is a dependency feature.  This is a welcome addition on my part.  One of the restrictions I've faced in the past using MLO, even with my casual use of the program, is a lack of task dependency options.  Before, the tasks were automatically ordered according to the calculated priority value, and the only dependency option available was the ability to direct the program to complete a certain list of tasks in order (by default, the order of the list doesn't matter).  However, now, you can make individual tasks dependent on others, which allows for much more flexibility.  Right now, this option can only be enabled by tweaking the registry (see dependency link), but hopefully, in a future version, it will be more accessible through the program's options.

**poweruser feature**
MLO has a very cool parsing feature which allows you to quickly add new tasks and set a bunch of the task variables by typing the commands out in a little text window (like a command line entry with parameters).  This is for all of the hardcore keyboard guys out there who like keyboard shortcuts and feel that clicking around with the mouse is highly inefficient relative to using a keyboard.  I believe this feature has been around for a while in MLO (called "Rapid Task Entry").  Personally, I've never really used it, but I have played with it and it is very cool if you need it.  See the screenshot below:
Screenshot_20080710-115726.png

My Suggestions and Requests
MLO's author keeps track of user requests with a formal system, so I won't belabor the point here.  I just want to point out a couple of things here that I feel are important to the more casual user like me.  One of them is the printing template.  Right now, it's functional and works fine for the most part (I use it a lot for meetings).  I wish it were easier to fiddle around with the printing options (color, font size, organization, etc.).  The only way to do it now is to edit a template file using a text editor or something similar.  It would be better if there was some kind of WYSIWYG way to do it inside the program itself, with buttons and visual aids.

The other feature I'm eagerly waiting for is the ability to color and flag task items.  Again, it's not a big deal, but it would help us psychologically since most people are very visual.  I can see that it is already planned for, so that's good.

Concluding Remarks
So, I hope that this updated review will prove to be useful for some people.  I still consider MLO the best of its kind of software available right now, as far as task management and to-do list applications go.  MLO is small, runs very lightweight, very feature-rich and customizeable, is very good at what it is designed to do, and doesn't try to do things outside of its intended scope.

Disclaimer
I am obligated to mention that I have been given a free license for my review.  Hopefully, my past reputation as a reviewer will be enough for readers to trust my objectivity.  I would not recommend, and definitely not use on a daily basis, any software that I don't think highly of (unless they force me to at my job).

Now that Firefox 3 is available, the PowerMarks bookmark program doesn't work with it anymore.  It's really the best bookmark manager ever.  Very simple, very fast, very easy to use.  I know there have been reviews here for other bookmark managers, but they're different.

Someone needs to copy Powermarks and do something very similar.  The author has killed the program earlier this year, so there will be no more Powermarks.

Living Room / Why is all audio on websites so freakin loud?!
« on: May 09, 2008, 11:38 PM »
Why is the audio on websites so loud all the time?  It's always loud, and I'm not talking just a little too loud.  It's more like it's 5 times the volume of what anyone could possibly want.  And it has nothing to do with your local audio settings because that is always set to what you prefer to hear.  Even if you have your local settings to pretty low volume, the website audio is super loud.  Like on youtube, the comfortable setting for me with my local audio settings is with the youtube slider at about 5% with the rare exception.  All flash videos and audio playing embedded on websites are ridiculously loud.  Anything on myspace is crazy loud.

I use IndieVolume to deal with it, but why the hell does it have to be so loud in the first place.  Possibly the most annoying thing about the web.

General Software Discussion / How often do you reinstall Windows?
« on: March 28, 2008, 03:18 PM »
It's getting to the time where I'm thinking of reinstalling Windows XP.  I've been having problems with my system tray, and the latest version of Kaspersky was turned off for a few days because I felt it was slowing down my computer, and I think I got a virus (even though kasperksy has now cleaned it).  Also, my exe file association is broken, so I can't run any exe files until I fix it.
And it's been several years since I last installed Windows, I figure it's as good a time as any.  But I swear, since joining DC, I've installed so many programs on this computer, it's ridiculous!  It will take me a while to reinstall everything.

I've been using the Bat for a couple of years now, and I still don't know what's so great about MicroEd.  I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything, I just don't see any (really, none at all) advantages that MicroEd has over a normal text editor.  All I can think of is hassles.  For example, in a regular text editor, if I didn't type any characters in a space, like the space below or at the end of a line, if I click in the blank area, it won't go past the last character that's been typed.  In MicroEd, the whole space is fair game for clicking, so if I click somewhere empty that's where the cursor goes.  But never once have I had the need to type somewhere, and then type something else in a completely separate location like that.  Why would anyone need that?  That's the only difference between MicroEd and normal editors that I can see:  the fact that you can click and type anywhere.  But it's a hassle, that's all it is.  I'm always checking to see if I'm REALLY at the end or beginning of a line because you never know with MicroEd, the only way to be sure is to use the Home and End buttons.
I just don't get it.  Please tell me the advantages of this, or else I'm just going to turn it off.
