Hey, I really like the name of that toy! :)

p.s. Just to be clear, I have no affiliation with it at all!

Living Room / Re: Amazon.com == AMAZING!
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:00 AM »
I use Amazon a lot and have done so for many years. Their customer service is top notch and is something to consider when picking a merchant.

Recently, I had ordered a couple of books and was told to expect delivery on a particuar date. On that date, I checked with "where's my stuff" and learned that it was "out for delivery."  Later, in the evening and noting they still had not been delivered to me, I checked again only to find out that the package had already been delivered. Thinking that one of my neighbors had taken delivery, I asked them about it and, no, none of them received the package.

I called Amazon's service department and it was eventually determined that UPS had mistakenly delivered the package to another part of town. Amazon's response was to send out a duplicate expedited order which I received two days later - at no charge!

I'd call that exceptional service.

I use Aeris Calendar (http://www.aeriscalendar.com/). I got it for the calendar features but it's nice to have its nice weather monitoring.

There's another part to the lifetime license equation. Many of the people who buy lifetime licenses do not use them forever. Their needs change or they find something better and therefore don't require lifetime support.

It's a little like those mail in rebates. People base their purchasing decision on the lure of those rebates but something like only 25% of them ever actually end up mailing in the rebate request. Mail in rebates become a profit center for a business.

This is timely. I just downloaded the TUU 2009 update and came across your message. Fortunately, I hadn't installed the update yet and, now, I don't think I will. Thanks for the info.

Clipmate will let you do that. You can turn on "Append Mode" and specify any separator character you want.

General Software Discussion / Re: FileBox eXtender Alternatives
« on: August 01, 2009, 02:49 AM »
I have been using Direct Folders for years and I think it's best in its class. Unfortunately, it it is not compatible with ESET antivirus.  :'(

I have just replaced FF with FileBox eXtender and it seems to work pretty well. I haven't had any problems using eXtender with OpenOffice.org Writer.

Do you use the version 3 of Open Office ?

I have problems with Calc in this version . With Writer I don't Know.

Contro,

Yes, I am using version 3.1 of OpenOffice. I just tried Calc and I see no problems with eXtender. I don't know what the problem could be with your system but, if you're running Windows that probably says it all. (Yes, I use Windows.  )

General Software Discussion / Re: Search with Bing
« on: July 01, 2009, 01:02 AM »

P.S. i did a search but couldn't find any topics on this offering by Microsoft. :)

Microsoft called it the "Decision Engine" but debuted it as "Bing" named after the lead developer. I guess they thought "bing" sounded better. Visit http://www.decisione...ine.com/Default.html for more info or just bing "decision engine"

Funny how that works. I waited a long time for a UE discount and finally bought it. If only I had waited a couple more weeks! :)

I agree with tinjaw. I can't imagine a supermassive spreadsheet with any kind of structure being able to look stuff up in a reasonable time to say nothing of recalulating.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors
« on: May 28, 2009, 01:22 PM »
Thanks, all,for the feedback. I would still think that the need for a text editor to handle humongous files would be rare but I'm sure it's a lifesaver when you do need it. I probably haven't even read 100,000+ pages of text in my entire lifetime let alone having read that much in a single text file.

Very often, I see text editors advertised as being able to handle huge files (100+ Mb) and people commenting that they work on those incredibly large files. It boggles my mind and I wonder what kind of files are you working on that are so hefty? That's equivalent to 50,000 pages or more of text. Is the capability of editing 100's of megabytes all that common as a requirement for a text editor?

WolframAlpha should be available within a couple of weeks. From the demos I have seen, I am very impressed by it. No doubt it will take some time to iron out the wrinkles but I am very much looking forward to it.

There's been a lot of hype about wolframalpha displacing google but I think that's a misrepresentation. Google is a great search engine that is designed to find sites for you that MAY have the information you're looking for. Its success depends on how well you phrase your search and the extent to which the site loads keywords, i.e. it is a hit and miss prospect.

Wolframalpha, on the other hand, is intended to provide you directly with the information you seek. It's a completely different paradigm. The early design appears to be geared toward quantitative information (How tall is the Eiffel Tower? What is the longest river in the world?) which is a natural endeavor for the creator of Mathematica.

We'll have to wait and see how it evolves and whether it can cut it as a general information search engine. In any case, I can't wait to try it out!

Jussi,

You are, of course, free to use whatever version numbering scheme you wish.

All I can tell you is that from this user's perspective and experience I didn’t see real value in upgrading. I upgraded to version 3.94a from 3.93 for which I paid full price less than one year earlier. I regarded the upgrade price to be too high and was very disappointed to find that the two versions were virtually indistinguishable to me.

So versions 3.95 and 3.96 come along and my experience with previous Zeus upgrades tells me the upgrade cost is far too high relative to the improvements and feature set. Can you see how a user might arrive at that conclusion? I suspect you might sell more copies/upgrades if you were to adopt versioning that is more in line with the rest of the world.

I know I would happily have upgraded (at least twice!!) had I perceived value in doing so. Now I just feel left out in the cold.

In any case, thanks for taking the time to explain your position even though it's not one that this customer can agree with.

The Zeus 3.96 version has had free upgrades since 19 th Jan 2007: http://www.zeusedit....um/viewforum.php?f=6
As it stands, minor upgrades should be free to registered users.
They are ;)

I have one complaint about it. Revisions come infrequently with trivial or barely noticeable improvements and upgrade prices are way out of line with the meager improvements.

Excuse me, but I am running the five year old version 3.94a and now you're at 3.96r? That change is in the SECOND DECIMAL PLACE of the revision number. That's supposed to be MAJOR?

Your upgrade page says

"This upgrade option is available to any Zeus user running the older 3.9x version who wishes to upgrade to the latest version."

and the cost of that would be $49.95.

Jussi,

While Zeus is a very capable text editor and I do like it a lot, I have one complaint about it. Revisions come infrequently with trivial or barely noticeable improvements and upgrade prices are way out of line with the meager improvements.

I am a registered Zeus user who paid for my last upgrade about four years ago. I would be far happier knowing that my text editor were under continued development and improvement. I would gladly pay for upgrades in that case. As it stands, minor upgrades should be free to registered users.

I'll second Curt's recommendation. I've been using AnVir for a while now and it is fantastic! It's the best process manager I've seen and it's great for debugging software that doesn't work. Anvir shows you all the exe's and dll's called by a program in realtime while it's executing. And it has a host of little niceties such as a listing of most recently launched programs and opened folders for easy access to them. And it monitors a number of processes including cpu usage and the temperature of your HD!

General Software Discussion / Re: quiet down the prompting
« on: March 27, 2009, 05:51 AM »
If you're worried about your memory in five years then be thankful for messages like "Are you sure you want to format Drive C:\?" :)

But seriously, many programs have options that you can set to remove those prompts and, otherwise, your fingers should learn to navigate through all the minor roadblocks so that it becomes automatic and really takes a negligible span of time. It's not like you could grow a beard or wax the car in that interval.

There are solutions however. You can use AutoHotKey or similar package to monitor those popup events and program it to dispatch them immediately.

I decided against the Resolver One deal. I don't think it's quite ready for primetime.

First, it's an incredible memory hog using up almost a 250 Mb on my system. And that is before I do anything!

Second, and most importantly, it's SO SLOOOW! It takes ages to load. Simple navigation about a spreadsheet should be snappy and prompt but Resolver One is like watching those slow motion replays on Monday night football. Even the simplest calculations such as copying a basic formula to a handful (fewer than 20!) of cells takes several seconds! I can easily lose my train of thought while waiting for Resolver One to perform.

And, finally, I have to wonder why even basic graphing/charting is not included in the program. To create a plot you have to first download and install a third party dll and then write code to produce a plot. Yes, I realize that the programming part is extraordinarily powerful, but, please, I shouldn't have to write my own code in a spreadsheet program just to get a quick view of my data. And I wouldn't have a clue about how to create a sophisticated plot (pie charts, pictographs, etc.) for publication.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think this program has tremendous potential with power far beyond any conventional spreadsheet program. I can also understand how a publisher might be cash-strapped and anxious to get the income flowing. However, with all the free or cheap conventional spreadsheet programs out there, I expect them to at least nail down basic performance and capability issues before I plunk down cash.

I hope they are able to resolve these issues and come up with an equally attractive offer when they do. I'll be first in line on that day. For now, I'll settle for quick over potentially powerful.

22
Miles, it sounds like you'd just LOVE NBASIC! (sylvaware.home.mindspring.com) :)

I bought version 9 at the end of June last year. What happened with v.10 was that when I checked the upgrade price I missed the "fine print" on their front page indicating free upgrades for a year. That was only valid with the maintenance upgrade but I only caught the "free upgrade" part.

They corrected me when I inquired about it but they were nice enough to offer an additional discount anyway. I would almost certainly not have upgraded without that discount.

24
I just haven't gotten around to setting up a keyboard shortcut to TCC but I already had one for v.8. I'll get around to it. :)

And, yes, I got a good discount on top of the half price upgrade. Perhaps DC could talk them into passing that along to members here?

25
I just took a quick look at PostBox. I didn't find any capability to create and use templates. Has anyone else found this feature or am I just out of luck?
