To my understanding, once the docs are indexed, the indexer will only look out for changes.

Maybe...
I don't know about WDS, but X1 seems to to a lot of work even for minimal changes. But it might be because I have around 57.000 files indexed.
I won't complain to much though : I love the detailed search options I get with X1 and the accurate results.

What are your computers' specs like ?

I know that the post in general is referring to Launchy (which I tried before FARR and didn't like as much) but I just tested the Outlook shortcuts listed here with FARR and they work well:
http://lifehacker.co...s-232678.php#c916976

Cool!

I've just created a couple alias with these. Great!

Thanks a lot!

I wonder where we could find other fine commands like these for Outlook ? (like looking for a contact, or stuff like that...)

2604
(My mistake.)  :-[

Sounds very cool. I'll have to check that out.  Thanks for posting it.

I haven't got the time to check it out yet.

The 260 characters limit has always bothered me since I like long file names (i put lots of keywords -- tags --in my file names, BUT I have very simple directory structures : perfect for FARR and desktop search tools...). The problem is that I always fear that i'll do something stupid with my directory structure at somepoint, and access to my files would become... difficult.
Anyway...

Did you try NTFSpath?

Hi mouser,
Hope you're doing well! :)

I've been happily trying your new beta for Clipboard Help+Spell for a couple weeks () to insert Tags in files (see https://www.donation...90.msg61986#msg61986)

But... I was wondering how could one use the a virtual folder to show the contents of a clipboard list (a "tag list", for instance) by alphabetical order so that terms are very easy to spot ? (I don't know much about "sql conditional expressions based on database fields"... Is there any simple intro to the sql thing, somewhere?)

One feature which could be interesting would be to add icon identification to each clip. But maybe "Clipboard Help+Spell" is not the right tool for what I'm trying to do (Insert tags rapidly...)... Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

Armando

Had a look again at tag2find and Tagg's features. Seems nice.

Tagg:
http://www.taggtool.com/taggfeatures.php

tag2find :
http://www.tag2find.com/feature.0.html
(tag2find might see a neat feature included at some point : "tag parts of documents (paragraphs, sentences, equations)". It's been suggested to the developpers : http://forum.tag2find.com/ftopic326.html)

Anybody tried these ?

Since tagging is a long, repetitive and tedious process, What I'd worry about is the precariousness -- so to speak -- of the tags attached to files with these type of software. What do you think... ?

And one last question : anybody uses acdsee to tag files?  :)

Clipboard Help+Spell could actually be used to tag most things effectively

How?

I'll try to explain my simplistic strategy in more details later, but the general idea is that to be able to find any tag rapidly in documents, I use special (and easy to remember) abbreviations (following rules) not confused with "real" words (example : for theatre, I'll use, THETHE; Software, SOFSOF; etc.). I also have a list of the tags I use.

"Clipboard Help+Spell" can include the list of these tags so that I can paste them relatively rapidly in a file name, as I type a text in word, etc. without making any spelling mistake. Of course, "Clipboard Help+Spell" is not exactly meant for that (I haven't found a way to alphabetically sort my tags in the context menu to find then as fast as possible, etc.), but, right now, it's the only tool I found for that. Anybody knows a better tool ?

Tagging in this way (inserting "real" text) is effective to find ideas quickly -- one can use any Desktop search software (X1,Copernic, Archiarius, etc.) to list the documents which include the tags.

Right now It's not very elegant and there might be other ways to achieve what I'm trying to achieve -- like using Tagg or tag2find. But it's the only way I found that almost guaranties I'll be able to recover my ideas rapidly whatever the Desktop search software I' using (or even the OS : using beagle in Linux, for instance).

It's good to be able to do normal "word searches", but, as everybody knows, it's even more powerful to use some kind of tagging on top of it. More about it after work... maybe! (and especially, Evernotes' ability to transfer its tags to an email, MS word document, etc....)

(edit : trying to correct my frenchy english a bit... Sorry!)

General Software Discussion / Tags tags tags...
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:11 AM »
1) I just played with a trial version of OneNote (comparing it to EverNote and other note taking software -- have been reading the gigantic thread one "note taking software") and was trying figure out the potential of its tagging system.

I must say Evernote is pretty good at tagging ; seems much more sophisticated than one note. But one thing that "bothers" me is that I'd like to extend its tagging system (or at least its tags...) to tag... everything, not just notes -- but also documents, files, images, etc.

So, following that logic, I was wondering if other applications of the office 2007 suite (especially word) use the same tagging system OneNote Uses ? I haven't been able to really find out, but that would be a strong point. Maybe.

Anybody?

2) Am trying to devise a way of tagging everything. Almost. Evernote and Clipboard Help+Spell could actually be used to tag most things effectively, and permanently, without depending on yet another "super specific" application to actually read the tags -- am thinking "cross platform tags". But I'm still in the process of thinking about it...

Anyway... I'm wondering what kind of general system you guys use to tag stuff.... If you do.

(I'm aware of at least two applications meant to tag : Tagg and tag2find. Anybody Using these ?)

Thanks a lot! :)

NTFSpath : Has anybody used that ? Could be an interesting tool.

http://libmaster.com/ntfspath.php

The LibMaster.com NTFSpath library (0.1 beta)

As you know length of path in NTFS file system may reach 32767 characters but most of functions in Windows API permit a maximum path length 260 characters.

The LibMaster.com NTFSpath library allows to work with a maximum path length 32,767 characters which is allowed in NTFS.

It contains most useful functions for working with path strings and NTFS file system.

Both of separators "/" and "\" are equivalent for all of the functions in the library.

Also no one of the functions do not trim spaces before the begin and after the end of an input string because NTFS allows space characters at the begin and at the end of filename or directory name.

This library used in The Libmaster.com TreeWalk library.

The archive with the library have an application with examples of using for the all functions in the library.

You can use this library for free.

Hi to all, my first post here so please be gentle  ;)

It works a treat in XP, I hope you find it as useful as I do.

Welcome to DC !

I like FileNote. Have installed it today and already used 10 times.

Hey Z, I just bought DirSync a week ago (mainly due to your recommendations).  Is SFFS better than DirSync in your opinion?

Never listen to Z when he's overly enthusiastic over a newly discovered software.

Have you tried Evolution for Windows ( http://shellter.sour...forge.net/evolution/). The Linux versions is quite good. I don't know about the windows version though.

There's....... Outlook...  :-[ (That's what I use for my customized GTD implementation. It's a bit overkill, but I've learned to like it...)

I tried Calendarscope a while ago. Pretty good (feature page : http://www.calendars...pe.com/features.html:up: You might like it.

2614
I don't know, I don't think I need to be able to index it with another program.  After all, it is "private" so I don't want to be as accessible as all my other normal documents.  The search options in the Journal are pretty extensive, so I shouldn't have a hard time finding anything.  If people are going to snoop around in my journal, at least make them work for it!

I guess you're right. My personal journals are encrypted...  :-[ But I have many other "journals" on different subjects, less intimate, and I love the fact that everything is indexed. Anyhow : If the search options in the journal software are good, well...

I wonder : what kind of stuff one might really need in a journal that's not already in a word processor (or that's not possible to create with macros, AHK, etc.) ? i'm not saying it would be useless or anything, I just wonder...

(edit : oups, mistake)

2615

I think if I'm not mistaken, Windows Desktop Search does index Onenote files.

True. I just don't like Windows Desktop Search very much. But, Yes, it's good to mention it does actually index OneNote files!

(I didn't specify it but I mainly use X1 and Copernic, which I find superior... And I don't want to have 3 DS programs to run at the same time.)

Edit : actually, there are many pages on the web analysing some of the problems that preoccupy me : Long-term Accessibility of files, "easiness of search", etc. `. Here's one that's pretty representatives of my anxieties  :) :
http://pigpog.com/node/1001

There are many others, of course...

(edit : added the web page link)

2616
I've tried different software and I came back to Word and Ultraedit (or even jedit) (it could of course be any word-text processor)... When I write a journal, I don't want to be bothered or distracted with a thousand new fancy options. I just want to be able to insert the date and time, write, change fonts, etc., and insert various objects (pictures, graphs...). There's one thing that I'd eventually like to do though : to "mindmap" inside word, and to be able to draw quick sketches. I might buy a Wacom pad for that.

I tried OneNote at some point -- fun but I disliked the fact that none of the desktop search applications I was using could index my documents' content. I'm getting a bit tired of all these different proprietary file formats on my computer. I 'm looking more and more for cross platform file formats, if possible.

(edit : added the "ultraedit, jedit" part...)

2617
But being the kind of person that I am, I believe that it's better to find a piece of software specifically designed for the intent of journals.

Being the type of person you are, you also probably want something that's "indexable" with a desktop search program (X1, copernic, archivarius...)  :)

steeladept:
I didn't realise that, in your Reply #6, the generic drivers you were talking about were only (or mostly...)for the hard drive and the network adapter.  :-[
So, yes, that's easy to do.
Thanks!

2619

I am looking for the exact drivers now that are generic by name, but the steps are to go into the device manager and find your hard drive.  Open the properties and go to the driver tab.  Then you update the driver.  Most likely you are using generic drivers anyway, at least if it is a brand name hard drive such as Seagate, but this is if you have special drivers for your hard drive, or if you switch from ATA to SATA drives (for example).

You can do a similar thing for the NIC, though I think I spoke before thinking on this one.  To my knowledge, there is no lowest common denominator NIC that you can use as a generic.  However, Windows does a pretty good job of matching one that will work.  If I remember right, Dell has only been using Intel and Broadcom chipsets for some time, so unless your model is really old, you will probably be fine with the ones already in Windows (as long as you didn't delete them to save space on your hard drive).

If it helps relieve a little anxiety; HP, Dell, Toshiba, IBM/Lenovo, etc. all tend to be VERY good about keeping exact hardware on hand for these fixes.  It is when you go to a repair facility that is not company owned that I have found in general seem to occasionally replace parts with "like kind".

Again : thanks so much steeladept. That was an amazingly quick answer.

It's amazing how many great minds there are in this forum !

I love DC !  :-*

Armando - I do this for a living at a rather large enterprise and I can say from my experiences, you only really need to worry about two drivers (Assuming Windows here, don't know enough about Linux or Macs yet).  The hard drive driver and the NIC driver.  As long as you can get the system up with these two drivers everything else can be retrieved after you get the machine back.  The way we accomplish this is to ensure generic drivers are installed and used before making the image.  Once that is done, you make the image.  Then, whatever equipment they send back, you should be able to place the image back on it and get it booted.  Once that is done, just update all the drivers and you are back where you were.

Thank you very much for these advices ! Especially that I haven't sent my laptop yet, and I'll be able to apply them if it gets fixed or replaced.
(I Have to call the Dell tech before -- I did a bunch of tests and none of then shows a faulty ram module or anything. Weird. I hope I get this BSOD figured out soon because it really makes me nervous : every time I'm working on my thesis, I'm afraid I'm going to loose some wonderful ideas.  ;) )

Anyway.

I have a question for you steeladept : what would be the best way to ensure all the generic drivers are installed and used ?

Thanks in advance !

A.

You're right, tinjaw. Unfortunately, my current project is so far removed from computing (though I am using a computer to do it!) that I'd never be allowed to switch to computer science (also don't have the background, sadly). I keep wondering if the university would just give me a PhD for time served! Nope. Apparently they feel that I should work on the project I outlined at the end of my first year. Hard asses!

 ;D ;D ;D

Armando, I'm glad that you and I (and mouser, vrgrrl and lilly to name but three others that I know of) are not alone. We're in good company, too, and we can look for inspiration to at least two people at donationcoder who have actually finished their PhD's - Zaine and Ken. Obviously, they've managed to balance a love for computers with their academic workloads, so it can be done!

Good to here that.
I love computers too.  :-[
I'm thinking of taking a looooong break for the summer.

Working on a PhD thesis (theory of theatre ; now, that's useless) can be a pretty lonely walk. Not to mention that I'm not even sure I'm in the right domain anymore... (and... like you Darwin... I won't be able to switch to computer science.... or evolutionary psychology... or biology, or management... or all the other things I'd consider doing if I had five or six lives...).... and I'm tired of these French universities (I speak French myself; I'm from Quebec, canada's French province)... :)

More about all that later. I'm actually going to meet my thesis supervisor.

Yes, welcome !

With the "Partial File Updating" -

Lets say I do an incremental/versioned backup of a file every day using that feature.
Presumably I can go back to the version saved, say, 10 days ago.

Is this difficult to do - has anyone had any experience/s here or tested it in that way?

When I tried the trial version, a couple months ago, it was easy to keep multiple backup versions Of each file.

My understanding is that partial file updating is only for synching.

But... try it and tell us.  :)

You could also contact the software creator.

Computer use for me is an avoidance strategy - I'm avoiding using my computer to do what I am supposed to be doing with my computer... Chiefly working on my PhD dissertation. I spend the majority of my time in front of my computer, pursuing this avoidance strategy. I've been spectacularly successful at this and see no end in sight.

That could be me...
