Living Room / current tasks/windows switchers solutions
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:19 PM »
I’ve approached this (small but annoying) problem in this thread, and there also... Please let me approach it differently here (don't worry, Ken, I'm not trying to compete with world hunger here  ;) )…

One problem that does not seem to be very well addressed by current windows/task switchers solutions (correct me if I’m wrong!) is the difficulty to work with multiple windows (let's say more than 10) of the same application AND... with similar names.

Exposé and alike solutions work well when you only have a few pretty different windows (easily and rapidly differentiated by their colors, shapes, icons...) . But If one creates multiple new windows of the SAME document in MS Word (to work on different parts of it "at once"), or if one work on multiple spread sheets sharing similar names an content, it can be very hard to find them rapidly and to work without headaches (... especially on a small screen). Exposé, making the thumbs bigger, organizing stuff on the task bar (eg : using taskbar shuffle), etc., don't seem to really solve that problem.

IMO, one thing that could solve the problem – (for me at least) and I'm a bit repeating what I already said elsewhere -- would be to be able to rename windows as one see fit (BUT the renaming solutions that I've tried don't work in certain situations -- e.g. : multiple windows or views of the same document), and use something like farr to swiftly jump from one to another!

But maybe there are already solutions (or possible solutions) for similar problems… Anybody?

Living Room / Change title bar name (in any application)
« on: September 05, 2007, 03:25 PM »
I'm sure I saw a little script somewhere that can do that -- here maybe?
Does anyone knows if it exists?
(I often open multiple windows of a unique documents and if I could retitle each of them, it would be easier to switch between them rapidly, using Justice's efficient AHK "task switcher" script for farr.)
Thanks!

Living Room / encrypting an already encrypted file
« on: September 05, 2007, 02:51 AM »
Hello...
I haven't found much on that subject (encrypting -- mistakenly or not... -- an already encrypted file).
Is it something bad to avoid? I'm specifically thinking of encrypting an allready encrypted Word files with another "encrypter" (TrueCrypt, AxCrypt, whatever...).

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / A "Wiki Word" add-in for MS Word?
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:20 PM »
Does it exist? Would it be hard to implement?

Managing hyperlinks in word processors can be quite a pain. A system similar to the one wikis use (the famous CamelCased or "[[ ]]" Wiki Words) would probably be convenient. Anybody knows if such a functionality can be implemented (through a plugin or a macro) to MS Word (or other word processors - TextMaker, OpenOffice.org...)?

I've been testing Achieve Planner (AP); I don't remember seing anything on DC about it (when and if I have more time, one day, I might do a mini review) : it's a great application in active development; + the developer is really nice and responds himself to comments. Of course, AP's got some flaws (I've posted about some of them under zarmando at AP's forum), but what are flaws for me might not be for someone else...  :)

There are 3 different versions. $49 for Achieve Planner Standard, $79 for Achieve Planner Pro, and 99$ for the Achieve Productivity Suite. (of course, there is a fully functional trial download - 30 days). I found that the Productivity suite is the real deal for anybody looking for an Outlook/Covey/Allen mix... AP doesn't do email per se, but synchronizes with Outlook in special ways (will transform emails into tasks, etc.). For a features comparison see http://www.effexis.c...ature-comparison.htm

(Right now, I’m not using AP, but might be in a few months. Am waiting for the next version. I want to see how the search function, outlook integration and contact management will evolve.)

Linked to AP, there are also these 2 web sites :  http://www.timethoug...com/goal-setting.htm and http://www.goalstoaction.com/. Some nice stuff, well synthesized. [edit : but, shall I add, a bit too salesmanish for my taste...].

Some Screenshots. (I will post some more personal ones in a little while)

I’m willing to answer questions about AP, if any. There’s also the Achieve Planner forum : http://www.effexis2.com/forum/ .

I’m really struggling to find out the best way (softwarely speaking) to work with big amounts of flexibly structured data, mostly text and some images(sections, chapters, etc. but that are movable).   :stars:

I have thousands of pages on acting techniques. Presently, they're all in a Word document (sometimes, I like having big files because otherwise, I tend to duplicate data and get lost if I have to many loose files on the very same subject)… But using MS Word for huge files is just not very convenient (if not downright dangerous — “corruptionly” speaking. Although I've never experienced that...).

What I need is to be able to have:

- a unified view of all the data (one reason for that is that I want to be able to zoom out and see a lot of material at once, I want to be able to jump from page 1 to page 1052 in a second, etc.).
- an outlined view of the chapters, parts, sections, etc., (MS Word does that : Outline View, and Document Map)
- a very easy way to reorganize the order of the different sections,
- a file format that’s indexable (or a database that’s indexable – X1, Archivarius are the Desktop Search solutions I use -- It's just not a good way to use an internal searching engine, separate from the rest of my files!!!),
- an editing solution which allows the same kind of formatting ability, Bold, Italic, bullets, cross referencing, etc. that MS word, OpenOffice or any advanced word processor will provide (to me, formatting is not just fuss : it gives the document a hierarchical outline, makes it easier to read, find info... to me it's not just a matter of content first, form after...),
- the ability to access my data and READ it on an other computer relatively easily. (I might be willing to cede on that one though...)

There are already strategies that I’m not sure I want to try… Unless someone has an effective and safe way of implementing them :

- I don't like the idea of using a Word Master document -- it just doesn't have a good reputation (“corruptionly” speaking...),
- I don't like the idea of using the explorer "folder method" (dividing the document in pieces, placed in a hierarchy of folders) : it's not easy to reorder files and have a global view of the data. (There might be ways to do it in an orderly and efficient way though... Any thoughts? The programmers among you probably know ways I ignore...)

So... What are the other possible solutions? Using some kind of database? :myBase, Ultra Recall, Surfulater? Other softwares FrameMaker, OpenOffice.???

I've superficially tried some of these other strategies, but I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter before I commit to anything…

Thanks !

[edit: I've added some explanations and, hopefully, some clarity...]

I've been using a lot of  "periods" (and also commas) in my file naming lately, and, reading this http://msdn2.microso...ibrary/aa365247.aspx, this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115827, and other stuff, I'm now wondering if that could cause problems, eventually.

So, here are my questions :

a- If one wants to use (create) long file names (to avoid elusive descriptions or complex abbréviations), what would be the characters that should be avoided at all costs to 1- allow better compatibility in the long term, 2- and to insure seamless interoperability between 3 of most popular oS (Linux, Mac OSX and... Windows)? (of course, I'm not talking about the well known < > : " * ? / \ |)

b- should I avoid using periods ?

I'll welcome any good references too!

Thanks!

Mouser seemed to suggest that there are some good tools to easily organize and/or keep track and insert "text tags" in documents, files, etc.

Anybody knows of such tools?

(For a description of what I was trying to do... with Clipboard Help. + Spell, and some thoughts about tags, see these threads : https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8605.0 and https://www.donation...90.msg61986#msg61986 )

Help would be very much appreciated!

General Software Discussion / Semi-Automated file naming
« on: June 03, 2007, 01:40 PM »
Hello to all,

I’m trying to use a specific naming protocol for all my documents, but... I often fail to apply it consistently and properly when I'm in hurry or just working on too many things at the same time. So I'd like to automate it in some ways.

Example : when I save a document, it would offer me different fields, separated by columns dots periods** [sorry... still learning!] or other appropriate punctuation marks : type of document, author, title, date, keywords... And the final name would appear almost like an "MLA" or "Author-Date" formatted reference

Example such a formatted name : "CB-TH-Amado, Carlos Augusto Agon. 1998. OpenMusic.doc"
(in my example "CB-TH-" means "complete book" and "Thesis"; "Amado, Carlos Augusto Agon" is of course the author; 1998 is the date; and "Open Music" is the title.)

There might be ways to do that, or there might be an "Open/Save Dialog Box Extenders" software which could do that... I don't know...

Any ideas?

Thanks

** Not a good idea, it seems. Please see https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8820.0

Hi mouser,
Hope you're doing well! :)

I've been happily trying your new beta for Clipboard Help+Spell for a couple weeks () to insert Tags in files (see https://www.donation...90.msg61986#msg61986)

But... I was wondering how could one use the a virtual folder to show the contents of a clipboard list (a "tag list", for instance) by alphabetical order so that terms are very easy to spot ? (I don't know much about "sql conditional expressions based on database fields"... Is there any simple intro to the sql thing, somewhere?)

One feature which could be interesting would be to add icon identification to each clip. But maybe "Clipboard Help+Spell" is not the right tool for what I'm trying to do (Insert tags rapidly...)... Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Tags tags tags...
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:11 AM »
1) I just played with a trial version of OneNote (comparing it to EverNote and other note taking software -- have been reading the gigantic thread one "note taking software") and was trying figure out the potential of its tagging system.

I must say Evernote is pretty good at tagging ; seems much more sophisticated than one note. But one thing that "bothers" me is that I'd like to extend its tagging system (or at least its tags...) to tag... everything, not just notes -- but also documents, files, images, etc.

So, following that logic, I was wondering if other applications of the office 2007 suite (especially word) use the same tagging system OneNote Uses ? I haven't been able to really find out, but that would be a strong point. Maybe.

Anybody?

2) Am trying to devise a way of tagging everything. Almost. Evernote and Clipboard Help+Spell could actually be used to tag most things effectively, and permanently, without depending on yet another "super specific" application to actually read the tags -- am thinking "cross platform tags". But I'm still in the process of thinking about it...

Anyway... I'm wondering what kind of general system you guys use to tag stuff.... If you do.

(I'm aware of at least two applications meant to tag : Tagg and tag2find. Anybody Using these ?)

Thanks a lot! :)

NTFSpath : Has anybody used that ? Could be an interesting tool.

http://libmaster.com/ntfspath.php

The LibMaster.com NTFSpath library (0.1 beta)

As you know length of path in NTFS file system may reach 32767 characters but most of functions in Windows API permit a maximum path length 260 characters.

The LibMaster.com NTFSpath library allows to work with a maximum path length 32,767 characters which is allowed in NTFS.

It contains most useful functions for working with path strings and NTFS file system.

Both of separators "/" and "\" are equivalent for all of the functions in the library.

Also no one of the functions do not trim spaces before the begin and after the end of an input string because NTFS allows space characters at the begin and at the end of filename or directory name.

This library used in The Libmaster.com TreeWalk library.

The archive with the library have an application with examples of using for the all functions in the library.

You can use this library for free.

Hi everybody,

I think I'll have to send my laptop to Dell before my warranty is over (too many BSODs — memory parity errors).

However the idea of loosing more than a week of work, waiting for a replacement laptop and than reconfiguring everything makes me shiver… The reconfiguration part is actually the part I dread the most. So, here are my questions:

-In the eventuality Dell sends me a slightly different laptop (different Mother Board) are there any effective ways to transfer my actual system (win XP) or configuration (with apps, etc.) to the new one ?

I know a bit about solutions like PCmover, and Universal Restore by Acronis… But I wonder if they really work. Any experiences to share? I know ZRidling wrote about some…

Thanks a lot ! I'd really like some advices on this one...  :-[

Find And Run Robot / FARR + Linux + Wine
« on: April 24, 2007, 12:43 PM »
Briefly, since I have a busy day : I tried to install FARR on Ubuntu Linux with Wine. It... RUNS ! It searches correctly, etc. The only problem is that I can't open any file with it or run any program (but can copy the path, etc.) ... So, a bit useless as it is, but interesting that it basicaly runs.

So... Mouser, if one day you decide to port your app to Linux, the Wine way might be an interesting shortcut!

(I also tried to install AHK : it runs too, but haven't really played with it)

I lost a whole day of work. I was using AXcrypt to encrypt certain files and when my computer crashed the files where still in AXcrypt cache folder. So.... guess what happened next ? When I opened one of my encrypted files, it just erased the cache containing at least three important not backed up files, and showed me the old -- so old --  file !  >:(
I guess I should get into the habit of closing my documents more often -- so that AXcrypt re-encrypts the "cache files" and replaces the old one !! -- but it's not always convenient. :tellme:

Since I don't want that to ever happen again, I'm thinking of finding another solution.

Advices ?

Thanks !

General Software Discussion / Outlook tasks/Calendar
« on: April 19, 2007, 06:38 PM »
I've always disliked the idea that tasks (todos) and calendar items should be dissociated.
Or am I missing something ? Is it possible to link them ?

To me, a better "organizer" should have tasks that can be calendar items -- if needed. (This way of doing stuff would be much more convenient and, in many cases, prevent duplication of data). It should also visually organize tasks with colour codes, hierarchies, etc. but that's another story...

MLO (MylifeOrganised) has some nice features, and I might look into it, but  does anybody know if it's possible to link calendar items to tasks in Outlook ?

Thanks

Find And Run Robot / Blue Screens : FARR? just wondering...
« on: March 24, 2007, 08:33 PM »
Hi people.

I've been experiencing Blue Screens since I got my new computer (Dell inspiron 6400, 9 months ago). "Memory Parity" errors, to be more specific. Now, I've tried pretty much everything I know to resolve my problem (changing RAM modules, removing drivers, changing the page file size, reinstalling windows...). But these damn Blue screens still appear once in a while. Recently, I noticed they always seemed to appear while using FARR. It could really well be mere coincidence. But, in my exasperation, I'm wondering if any of you experienced freezes or similar Blue Screens which could be related to... FARR. I'm hoping not, but at the same time, I so much to resolve that problem -- I've waisted so much time and lost data. i'm fed up.

many many thanks for any advice.

A.

Is there a way to do that with FARR?
Right now, each time I want to see a contact (for a phone # or whatever), a "Todo", calendar entry, I need to open Outlook or use x1.
It would be nice if FARR could do something like that (I believe QuickSilver can do that type of stuff) ... Maybe a plugin?
Cheers

Find And Run Robot / FARR and X1 (or other desk. Search tools)
« on: January 04, 2007, 11:27 AM »
Hello,

I was wondering if it's possible to add a group alias to search in X1  -- the same way we use the "search" command  to activate google, amazon, etc. ?

Also... Non-standard caracters, like é, ê, ë etc., don't seem to work with the "Search" alias. Does someone know how to fix that ?

Many thanks!  :)

Find And Run Robot / Stalls for 3-4 sec
« on: December 15, 2005, 11:23 PM »
Hello.

I'm an avid user of F&R Robot. Great software.

I realized today that when search in the "recent" folder is enabled, it slows things down -- it could also be a because of specific file in the recent folder or something else, I Don't know.

More specifically, when I wanted to start the calculator and used the down arrow to immediately select the calculator, F&RR froze for about 3-4 sec. and then resumed. Like I said, the "recent" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Recent) did it... when I removed it, it was okay. Putting it back (in the "Search Folder" area) recaused the problem.

Thought I'd share that...

P.S. :Not that many files in the recent folder (around 30). I've got a P4 1.8Ghz, 512mb ram.
