Found Deals and Discounts / Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 super offer
« on: June 06, 2008, 07:54 PM »
Paragon offers its "Drive Backup 8.5" (updateable!) at 9,95€. That's 75% off.

The page is in French -- it looks like a France/European offer, but I didn't see anything officially saying that other countries couldn't benefit from the offer.

Anyone?

DcUpdater / DcUpdater/Google translate "loop"
« on: May 11, 2008, 01:03 AM »
DcUpdater always says that my "Google translate" installed version is 1.01.02 and that version on the web is 1.01.04, even after several updates.
Any ideas?

(Chose to post that here, but could also be posted in the DcUpdater "Google translate" section)

Anybody experiences that sometimes ? It only happens in firefox, not opera or ie. Seems like a Firefox bug, but can't nail it down.

General Software Discussion / Searching encrypted archives
« on: February 27, 2008, 09:30 PM »
Today I realized that a pretty useful file disappeared from my hard drive and so I was forced to search my incremental backups from the last 2 years. (Yes! Finally, I get to use them!  :) )

And then I realized that many indexer don't even index the file names in encryted archives, even if the file name itself is not encrypted. ie : Archivarius wouldn't index the unencrypted filenames of encrypted archives. I didn't examine too many options before finally trying winRAR's "find" feature. Beautiful. Worked like charm and found my file in a sept. 2006 archive. Took maybe 15s.

Which other solution do/would you use/recommend for such a task?

Living Room / How can a RAM module suddenly go *%$!?!#<!!
« on: February 09, 2008, 12:23 AM »
I just had a very bad day. You know, when your computer problems just eat all your time (errrr... yes, it happens way too often)?

I had to successively reinstall 3 images (backups), wipe my drive, check it for defects, etc (NO f0dder... i didn't use spinrite). I thought I got a virus spreading everywhere, things went baaaaad. One document even got corrupted.

Well, after the third image and my system not event booting correctly (registry problems, firewall not even firing, word having not enough memory to start (!!!), etc.), I decided to check my RAM...  :)  Yesterday, it was working perfectly well (BTW it's "new RAM I bought a month ago, cheap, I admit, but it passed all my tests back then...) and today it started to crumble more and more (it seems), and, to finish, i couldn't even run a Dell memory test for 1 sec without an error!!! WTF.

What happened? What could suddenly kill a RAM stick ?? Not a virus, could it??? Bad Mobo?? Personal electromagnetic superpowers??

General Software Discussion / https by default?
« on: January 30, 2008, 12:45 PM »
Is it possible to configure a browser to use https by default? And if not, why? Thanks.

I lost my "screen tips" in Word 2003.

They're really useful because of all the comments I insert in my documents : these comments are normally instantly available via "screen tips" (or tooltips) when i hover my mouse on top of the highlighted portion of the text.

1- I've enabled (+ disabled and reenabled...) "screen tips" in Tools --> Customize --> Options.
2- I tried reverting to the original normal.dot template... (just in case).
3- I tried exiting word, reboot...

They do work VERY briefly for manually inserted screen tips  (via the "insert bookmark" option), But still don't work for comments.

 :wallbash:

Any ideas???

Living Room / Vista : included backup and security software
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:16 PM »
This is a simple question for those currently running Vista. My parents just bought a laptop. I'd like to help them a bit but I'm no Vista expert/user. Therefore, before I uselessly send them looking for extra stuff, I'd like to know what Vista is already capable of, in terms of :

- backup (imaging, incremental...)
- Security (firewall, antivirus)

As it is, is it enough for someone who's NOT very computer litterate to safely browse the net, and backup files efficiently?

Thanks!

PS : any other tangential recommendations will also be appreciated!

Here's what I got when I wanted to re-enable my disabled plugins :

Screenshot - 2008-01-16 , 18_51_52.jpg

and then, after pressing "OK"

Screenshot - 2008-01-16 , 18_52_13.jpg

It's now impossible for me to load farr's plugins. What should I do?

60
Every 6 launch/close ( :o), farr will freeze for about 5.5 seconds (usually when launching something or just before being "closed"/hidden...). I don't know exactly when this has started, but it's been like that for a little while... probably since I changed my Launch history value to 999!

Anyway : I've discovered that the freeze corresponds to when farr saves changes to its ini file and creates a backup. Needless to say, my ini file has lots of lines... hence, it's pretty "big" (for an ini file... 69.5 Kb). But why on earth would it take so much processing power and freeze farr for a full 5.5 sec to save an ini file and create a backup?

I tried reducing the ini file's size  (by cutting the "LaunchHistory" section to 30 items) : farr's 6th satanic shutdown is much quicker : there'll be a slight freeze :1-1.5 sec maybe). The devil is in the ini size, it seems -- in this case, bigger isn't better, it seems...

(PS : just in case, I also tried stopping my antivirus and firewall -- they don't seem to be guilty of anything here. Maybe a "faulty" plugin? I tried deactivating them all, but it still does it. I could try reinstalling everything, but don't have enough time tonight [edit : see next post].)

(computer specs : laptop, core duo 1.8ghz, 2GB RAM)

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / WinManagement Snap & AHKSnap !
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:42 PM »
Ok, so here's a modified version of jgpaiva's WinManagement AHK script (my first try at a "real" AHK script).   :)

It doesn't need farr to work and is now a kind of FreeSnap clone... without the undo feature (sorry...) and the incremental resizing (I think that this can already be dealt with properly with Grid move anyways...)... BUT, of  course, with some other features (already existing in WinManagement) : 1-Maximize vertically or horizontally, 2-Toggle On Top/Not On Top, and 3-Maximize/Restore window

Here 'a description of the hotkeys/features (these are mere suggestions : to modify the hotkeys, just modify the script) :

Snap window's borders to edge of the screen :
--------------------------------------------------
WinKey + Up  : snap top window border to screen edge
WinKey + Down : snap bottom window border to screen edge
WinKey + Left : snap left window border to screen edge
WinKey + Right : snap right window border to screen edge

Move window to screen corners :
----------------------------------

WinKey + Home : move window to upper left corner
WinKey + End : move window to bottom left  corner
WinKey + PgUP : move window to upper right corner
WinKey + PgDn  : move window to bottom right corner

Maximize vertically or horizontally :
---------------------------------------

Ctrl + WinKey + Left or Right : Maximize horizontally
Ctrl + WinKey + Up or Down : Maximize vertically

Other common window management :
------------------------------------------

Ctrl + WinKey + PgUP : Maximize/Restore window
Ctrl + WinKey + PgDn : Minimize window
Ctrl + WinKey + Home : Toggle On Top/Not On Top

Here' the compiled version + the AHK script. To run the uncompiled script, you need to have AHK installed (download it for free).

Edit : 2008 01 07 : new version to better deal with the taskbar.

Edit : 2012 03 20 : completely revamped script by Lanux. See end of thread.

Developer's Corner / AHK: multiple hotstrings
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:21 PM »
I guess I could post that simple question in a specialized forum, but I know many here are AHK experts so...

I make an extensive use of AHK "auto-replace hotstring" (to expand abbreviations as I type them).

Now, I'd like to know how to have multiple potential hotstrings for the same string replacement.

Example. Let's say I have this line :

:oc:parc2::tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPdoct tgsPThDo tgsPARC2 tgsPat tgsPthée

but I want to have more than one hotstring ("parc2" in that case) to trigger the string replacement "tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPdoct tgsPThDo tgsPARC2 tgsPat tgsPthée". (For example : I'd like to have "parc3" and "parc4" to trigger the same string replacement.)

What would be the proper syntax?

Thanks a lot!

Living Room / Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« on: December 18, 2007, 09:36 PM »

Yet another hard drive question. :-[

I'm going to buy a new HardDrive for my laptop. I'm looking for a 160gb SATA (Seagate),  instead of my current 80gb.

I was going to buy a 5400 rpm model (ST9160821AS). The recording method of that drive is supposed to perpendicular, which is considered a good thing (but I'm no specialist...)

But now I'm hesitating : should I go for the 7200 rpm (ST9160823AS )?? This one uses similar technology (perpendicular), but Seagate also mentions "16/17 EPRML" (I thought that was pretty standard, ….. anyway). Seems faster according to the specs, but I wonder about 2 things :

- Heat (will my laptop run significantly warmer ?)
- Battery life (will the battery life decrease significantly ?)

Anybody ?

Thanks!!

I don't know if this is a good idea, but I thought of creating a thread for all our farr tips and tricks : plug-in configuration, general usage tricks, etc.

Edit 2 : It would nicely complement this other thread (thanks lanux!): Alias sharing
Edit 3 : And here's a link to all aliases and plug-ins (thanks lanux!): https://www.donation...user/findrun/addons/

So, farr fans, here's the opportunity to share your farr knowledge :

Find And Run Robot / Very very simple suggestion
« on: November 26, 2007, 12:44 PM »
Hi mouser, I was wondering if increasing the default value for the "max. files to keep in launch history" could be a good idea.

I don't remember the exact number of the default value, but I do remember it was quite low, and since stuff already in the history is found much much faster (especially if the system is low on ram), I believe it would do no harm and wouldn't slow down anything to increase it to 500 or something like that (mine is at 999 -- so it's almost like an index...). I'm not sure how much new users realize how much this speeds up the search.

Find And Run Robot / Written changes to farr's ini file
« on: November 04, 2007, 07:49 PM »
Hi mouser,

I'm trying to find out when exactly does farr writes changes to the ini file. Seems to me that it does periodical saves? But when? Is that modifiable?
I'm wondering for backup planning purposes.

Thanks!

PS : sorry if that's explained somewhere -- couldn't find it.

2- Maybe that has been mentioned before : farr finds but cannot launch a file if it has a space as the last character of its name
(e.g. : E:\Doct\xLC-.Moreno,Jacob L.__Théâtre de la spontanéité__+tgsPat tgsPthée+ .doc)

That bug hasn't been added yet to the "FARR v2 - Official Bug Tracking Thread".

Thanks!

Living Room / How do you tag (or even organize) your files?
« on: October 19, 2007, 11:40 PM »
This thread was created to answer a question about the way I tag files (I didn't want to hijack this other thread). But maybe we could all share our systems! [edit : just added that part to make this thread more... encompassing]

Like I said in the other thread, after much pondering, I've decided to append tags directly to filenames.

Some of the reasons for that decision are :

1- they (the tags) are always there and <b>visible</b> ("Filename tags" are "tangible" : can see them all the time, in explorer and any other desktop search tool), (tangibility)
2- they are compatible with any search tools (farr, X1, etc.) (compatibility),
3- they're available in any other modern OS (portability)
4- they're not that cumbersome to manipulate (change, add, remove, modify) with a good renaming utility (BRU, Flash Renamer) and a little bit of RegEx knowledge, and they're also VERY easy to add to a filename on the spot (in the "save" window, or in the "property" window) with AHK's help.. but more about that latter. (flexibility)
5- they're realiable (reliability and... robustness?)

So… Some details: as it is now, my tagging scheme is built around the abcz abbreviation system. I actually used this system awhile back, then stupidly abandoned it because of some wrong language considerations, and then came back to it (on rjbull’s advice — thanks again!).

The syntactic structure of my tags/categories is :

1-   "tgs" (a fixed string that indicates that the word is a tag — it could be something even shorter, like two numbers, but it’s not as convenient with farr)
2-   "X" (a capitalized variable which indicates a metacategory)
3-   "abcz" (the abbreviated theme, following the abcz system).

Following this model, here are some tag examples (just for illustration, won't go into too much detail...):

tgsOimpt (something important)
tgsOru (something I’ve already read)
tgsPphie (something related to philosophy)
etc.

These tags are placed at the end of my strictly formatted file names in which all “info fields” are delimited by specific characters.
e.g.: “Tags strings”  always start and end with a “+” sign. These characters facilitate file renaming, readability, and other file name related operations.

So, a fairly typical filename would look like :

xAR-.Eagleman,David M.(2005 11 09)__Time and the Brain__,,in The Journal of Neuroscience,,[No 45 vol 25]+tgsPscie tgsPbioe tgsPneue tgsPat tgsPthée tgsPPEP+.pdf

That’s 160 character just there. But I don’t care because my work flow has improved dramatically with that technique : I access everything in seconds with farr (or even X1 or Archivarius).

I use AutoHotkey’s help to implement that system. Using AutoHotkey allows me to :

1- make sure I never ever make orthographic mistakes,
2- never use a tag that "doesn't exist" in my "registry",
3- easily search through my tags (just use "search" in my AutoHotkey script) which are classified hierarchically (easy to do in AHK’s script),
4- easily add new tags or modify them,
5- have some tags to always appear together, grouped ; example : if I write "perl", I want AHK to write : "tgsOmi tgsOPERL" (which means : "something personnal, written by me...)
6- …etc. possibilities are uncounted

Of course, I organize my AHK script so that it’s easy on the eyes and pleasant to use (with lots of commented lines -- essential)!

My only gripe with that system is that, compared to a complete software solution like tag2find :

1- it's probably not as easy to replace/edit/change/erase tags once they're in the names,
2- it’s not as sexy as using a nice GUI,
3- and, mostly, there are limits to how many tags I can append to a file name (I've yet to have big problems with that, and hopefully, the 260 char. limit will be obsolete in a few years) …  Like I said in the other thread :

It's not perfect: file names tend to become gigantic and it's pretty important to keep them under control because of the windows 259-260 max path limit (IMO a stupid limitation, even if I understand why — when will that change!!! Amiga’s SFS allowed 32000 ack in 1998)... In my case, the 259 character limit is especially a problem for documents names — I put a lot of info in there : document type, author, date, title, etc. + tags ; I do that for very good reasons (don’t want to hear about windows files metadata capabilities : too inconsistent), it's extremely helpful. For applications, file/folder names length are not as preoccupying since I don't write anything else in the name but the program’s name  +  the tags or categories.)

Anyways, I still manage to be pretty efficient using software like BRU (Bulk Rename Utility) or Flash Renamer.

Regarding the visual aspect & the “folder problem” vixay mentions

But you know. I find that there is a difference in paradigm between tagging, and folder hierarchy. Tagging almost always requires you to search, and doesn't give you a good folder level view, but gives you quicker access to stuff you need. Whereas folders, give you good views, allows exploration, but makes finding things a bit harder. I think when we reach the tags = folders in explorer stage is when it'd be great! (like the delicious extension in firefox!)

yes… I know what you mean. It is a problem. I currently use X1’s ability to save different type of searches in a folder tree, and I do create temporary folders I windows’ file system for current projects. (I usually destroy the folders once I’m finished though). It can make it easier to follow a project, depending on what I’m doing.

I’d actually really like to use “true” virtual folders more, but I found ALL the “virtual folders” solutions that I’ve tried are unreliable : change the name of the file inside the virtual folder, move it to another location in the true folder, etc. and weird things start to happen (e.g. :  tried the “file collections” feature in Directory Opus : I trialed it a while back and it didn’t work as expected).**

Sorry for that long post.   :)

So... How do you tag YOUR files?

**
Spoiler
Actually, yes the best potential solution I found is tag2find (it could also be used to create virtual folders). But it didn’t pass my compatibility tests and portability requirements. To me not only a “certain degree” of portability is important, but I also want to keep some kind of control over my data (even if created with a piece software that's proprietary). In that spirit, I find that file identificator/metadata/tags shouldn't be just lost in the advent of file transfers, file backup, etc. (a likely possibility with all current tagging software I’ve tried). Also, aside from portability, one thing that "bothered" me with tag2find  was that I couldn’t see the tags while I was in explorer (or any other desktop search tools or file manager for that matter) : tags were pretty much invisible unless the tag2find explorer was opened. That made the tags and the "tagging endeavor" a pretty abstract thing... they could only be used with tag2find, but not with X1, farr, etc.

Some of these criticisms might be addressed in the future beta release (end of Octobre, actually), and APIs might be released for software like launchy — hopefully, farr will be able to tap into that opportunity too… We’ll see.

General Software Discussion / Managing projects with OUTLOOK
« on: October 08, 2007, 12:33 AM »
I was kind of satisfied with my home brewed project management system in Outlook until… now.

Question :

Do you know any affordable or free add-on/application to help managing projects in conjunction with Outlook’s “tasks” feature?

Here are some of the options I’ve found, googling around (maybe some will find it useful):

TrackerOffice :  Just mentioning it, even if not really an option : expensive and… “Minimum licensing begins at 50 named users, with a beginning price of $15,000 for a single module.”  Ouch.

- EasyProjectPlan (Excel Project Plan) :  Price:   $ 219.36 (CAD); pretty expensive if you ask me… [edit : 2007 10 25 -- 13 10 : Only expensive for a single user, not teams, since : " Each license includes UNLIMITED DISTRIBUTION to project team members" -- it should be noted though that "Each person accessing the EasyProjectPlan© Admin Screen must purchase a license".]  But seems to ingrate nicely with Outlook, lots of features… Excell oriented. A bit overkill for my needs, most probably.

    EasyProjectPlan features include:

- Track project tasks, action items, issues, bugs, defects, risks, change requests.
- Import over 30 MSProject task fields – custom select from over 700 MSProject fields.
- Create and Print Gantt Charts directly from Excel – MSProject NOT required.
- Synchronize EasyProjectPlan© tasks with Microsoft Project.
- Synchronize EasyProjectPlan© tasks with Outlook Tasks/Calendar/Email.
- Automatically assign and send Outlook tasks and calendar appointments.
- Merge EasyProjectPlan© data with MSProject and maintain Dependency/Predecessor/Successor links.
- Merge multiple EasyProjectPlan© files into a single master file.
- I-mport MSProject tasks with UNLIMITED number of levels into EasyProjectPlan©.
- Schedule tasks Finish-To-Start.
- TIME support for Start and Finish dates.
- Supports Import/Export for any 3rd party product including Project Viewers.
- Group tasks by project plan hierarchy - collapse and expand task groups.
- Email task information directly from the spreadsheet.
- UK date formatting (dd/mm/yy) is automatically detected and set on open.
- EasyProjectPlan©  file is only 2MB (the entire project plan can be emailed as a single 2MB file attachment).
- Track changes on the spreadsheet.
- Advanced version control features.

- EasyTaskSync : same company as EasyProjectPlan. Same price tag. Syncs MS project with Outlook — handy if you’ve got MS project (expensive), I guess…

EasyTaskSync features include:

- Synchronize Microsoft Project tasks with Outlook Tasks.
- Automatically assign and send Outlook tasks.
- Add tasks to team member calendars using Outlook Calendar.
- Email task information directly from Microsoft Project.
- Automated Status Column.
- Post-Sync Reports.
- Re-Link broken task links.
- Outlook tasks are automatically categorized by project plan hierarchy.
- Easy to use Admin Screen with password protection.
- EasyTaskSync© is compatible with EasyProjectPlan©

- Gantt for Outlook
seems to ingrate nicely with Outlook. Aesthetically pleasing??... Seems also a bit expensive for what it is : $121.

•   FREE technical support

- Outlook GTD add-in : well, the name says it all… $69.95.  Not many project oriented features.

Allows 2 levels of tasks, if I remember well?

4Team for Microsoft Outlook : at $49.95, it’s a deal, compared to other solutions… A bit too basic, maybe, as it doesn’t seem to allow nested sub-tasks (hierarchies of tasks). BUT, seems to integrate perfectly well with Outlook and does provide some kind of gantt chart functionality. Not sure if that solution is future proof… would have to try it.

- PLANTRAC-OUTLOOK : haven’t tried it  and have no idea how much $ it is. Also seems a bit overkill and… a tad old fashioned? [edit 2007 10 08 — 21:20 : yes, as Curt mentioned : known to work with windows 3.1 up to...2000. No mention of XP or Vista]
The feature list for this one is a bit long to post…

- Zoot [edit: added 2008 01 06] I just realized I forgot to include zoot in here. Zoot can be synced with Outlook and can be used to manage projects. like I said  here I didn't find it ideal to work with Outlook. Some of the reasons were :
    - Recurrence didn't seem to synchronize well,
    - Syncing seemed prone to errors (don't know why...)
    - "Sub-tasking" is not made much easier and does not transfer to outlook in a way that makes it easy to sync with a palm device (for example).
etc.

(2008 02 11 : decided to add these two as they can work (synced) with Outlook :
)
- My Life Organized (lots of stuff about that one on DC)

- Achieve Planner (there are a few threads mentioning it : https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9698.0, https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9417.0, https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=12247.0)

Iphigenie proposed these two (2008 02 11)

- Jello Dashboard
An open source single person GTD add on. Quite a few people around here are into GTD

- Taskline
I like the idea of this one, it does the "juggle tasks and fit into calendar" that Above & Beyond does, but within Outlook

Anyway…

Anybody tried one/some of these?

Any other affordable options  I've omitted? (Has to interact with Outlook) [edit : added this reminder on 2007 10 08 -- 21:13]

I’m using it right now. It’s got some nice new features…

Dear EverNoters!

It is our pleasure to announce the release of EverNote 2.2 Beta. New features include:
•   Opening and editing notes in separate windows ("out-of-tape notes")
•   Merging multiple notes
•   Google Desktop Search in EverNote databases
•   Enhanced support for international text input, including Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and others
•   Customizable note views
•   On-screen drawing and shape recognition in Universal Clipper
•   Improved keyboard tape navigation

Many more fixes and improvements are listed on the Release Notes page http://www.evernote....ote/releasenotes.php.
Direct download page is http://www.evernote....?file=EverNote22Beta.

 ….and some fixes.

My favorite new feature is probably to finally be able to open several resizable windows for different notes. Very convenient — I’ve been waiting for that one. I might be starting to use EverNote a bit more again. I also like the multiple notes merging feature and enjoy certain bug fix (e.g. : the universal clipper is now behaving properly : before, some web clipped images didn’t show when going through the universal clipper + the fonts didn’t have the proper size  — now everything works well!).  I don't care too much about the Google desktop search thing as I use Archivarius, but it’s a step in the right direction.  Etc.

Living Room / Maxthon 1.6.2 "ctrl + shift + arrow" annoyance...
« on: September 26, 2007, 08:07 PM »
Ok, this is a stupid question...  :-[
I could ask at the Maxthon forum, but I know that many forumers here use Maxthon.
I always use "ctrl + shift + arrow" to select words... But in Maxthon 1.6.2, this shortcut switches tabs. (Except when the cursor is in the address bar.)
It's a bit annoying IF all you want is to select words for editing. I've tolerated this for long enough.
Anybody knows how to fix that (by removing the "ctrl + shift + arrow" shortcut in Maxthon or... some other solution...)  ???
Thanks a lot !!!!
