I backup/Sync my files everyday, sometimes several times a day. Hence, speed and space has become a concern.

I did some "loose benchmarking" today. Here are some results.

"Methodology" (if there's such a thing in this experiment):

- Created a backup job which basically syncs a bunch of big files (750 MB, 470 MB, etc.) and a few smaller ones.
- I tried to configure all programs so that they perform as fast as possible, and I did include the delta copying on software offering it + caching of files on database when available.
- All Programs are copying files and folders to the same External hard drive (USB 2)

Red : slow compared to others    Bold and black : Fast compared to others.

NOTE THAT BVCKUP IS STILL IN BETA.

1   Initial Run

Not sure why Super Flexible File Synchronizer took longer here. SyncBack is real fast in that test.

   SyncBack   00:02:16
   SyncToy   00:03:02
   Bvckup   00:03:07
   SFFS           00:03:25

2   I then renamed all the folders to be backed up.

SFFS and SyncToy are able to rename folders and files, so they are incredibly fast in this test.

   SFFS           00:00:00
   SyncToy   00:00:00

   SyncBack   00:02:25
   Bvckup   00:03:05

3   I then renamed a couple bigger files.

Again : SFFS and SyncToy are able to rename folders and files, so they are incredibly fast in this test.

   SyncToy   00:00:00
   SFFS           00:00:00

   SyncBack   00:01:50
   Bvckup   00:02:11

4   Added a new 464 MB text file   to the folder

SyncToy is the fastest, here, SFFS is pretty slow. Not sure why, again (like in test 1)

   SyncToy    00:00:28
   SyncBack    00:00:32
   Bvckup    00:00:33
   SFFS            00:00:39

5   I then modified the content of the 464MB text file to see how Delta copying would affect performance

SFFS and Bvckup are clearly faster here. Must say that in most test I did, Bvckup is faster than SFFS. I tried changing some parameters in SFFS to make it faster, but it was never as fast, except in a few test. I tried to use the  "Use Cache Database For Source" but I got weird results...

   Bvckup   00:00:13
   SFFS           00:00:13

   SyncToy   00:00:28
   SyncBack   00:00:28

6   Made modifications to the 464 MB file and then left it open and tried to copy it.

Bvckup is clearly the fastest in this test, like I suggested in #5.

   Bvckup   00:00:05
   SFFS           00:00:19
   SyncBack   00:00:37
   SyncToy   Nothing was copied

Some thoughts...

As you see, they all have some problems in some situations...

- SFFS is probably the most rounded of the bunch, albeit a tad slow for some rather simple copying tasks.

- SyncToy I won't loose sleep waiting for it to include delta copying and use of VSS. But, it's pretty quick other wise... I you close all files before backup, and don't modify big files too often. And don't care about versioning etc. (which I haven't tested anyway)

- SyncBack is good, but lacks 2 very important features IMO : awareness of file/folder renaming/moving and delta copying.

- Bvckup (BETA) is probably the one with the most potential. It's generally quick, but ignores file/folder renaming/moving

I could've tested Oops!backup, But lacked space and time. Maybe next time. I'd be very surprised if it was that fast for pure syncing though as it 1) always fully backups modified files, 2) and copy the "reverse delta" portion of the file somewhere else. Oops! doesn't seem great when you work with video and music : hard drive quickly fills up if you want to keep a fair amount of versions.... I should do more testing though

IMO, if Bvckup could manage file/folder name changes, file/folder moves, etc. it might be the most interesting of the bunch. Surely, the Delta copying implementation is better than SFFS. But... Still a few things missing as it's beta.

Another font thread. :)

The article isn't exactly new, but I went through it today and tried to find the best font (again... 3rd time in the last 2 years...) for coding.

Screenshot - 2010-10-08 , 00_05_20.png

After a year, I still find Consolas incredible, even at 8pt. Of course, some won't like its clear-type / anti-aliasing...

I admit I sometimes need a  "clear type" break... but, generally I prefer  "clear type" on my laptop LCD.
LCD's are not all the same -- mine has very "sharp" pixels (this could also be due to the graphical adapter I suppose... But I'm far from being an expert in that field).

Other monospaced that I use from time to  time :

Dina 8pt (I love it, but... sometimes my eyes need anti-aliasing. Go figure. It's also a bit wider than Consolas and so doesn't allow me to see long comments as well... ;))

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Problems with fscript 1.20
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:58 PM »
With all my plugins updated to fscript 1.20, I get these problems:

1- farr seems to send strings to the clipboard and strings are immediately pasted to the presently focused apps (e.g. the "search" alias does that, BUT note that the actual search is also performed --> browser opens, shows results, etc.)

2- some plugins just stopped working. (Like the Google Translate one : the farr window flashes briefly and I can see that the internet explorer blank page is displayed in farr's result area)

All my plugins + farr should be up to date... Hopefully.

For now, I went back to v 1.9... Everything seems to be working now.

One of those questions. There are many threads about programming languages here... "What's The best programming language to start with", etc. But...  I don't think that such a question has its own thread.

So :
(1) what's your favorite programming language (whether you're actually using it or NOT, doesn't matter)
(2) and why?

Subjectivity is allowed... [Edit : but... could we try avoiding as much as possible language wars... and so things like "my language is better than yours", and "your language is the worst" type of thing ? Thanks ;) ]

Hi everybody,
I have a few programs (like Outlook) which sometimes have multiple instances showing up in the task manager... against my will.
Are there any utility which could prevent that from happening ?
Thanks.

Find And Run Robot / Reason for the "history list" upper limit ?
« on: November 29, 2008, 12:57 PM »
I'd like to have a longer history list (to mimic an index a bit more).
Is it possible to remove the 990 lines limit ?

Thanks!

I'm wondering how/when to best approach exception handling in a program.

It's not about how to technically deal with any exception in particular, but about strategies to deal appropriately with exceptions, in general.

Might sound simplistic, but my first question would be... When (at what stage of the programming phase/process) do you generally deal with exceptions?

1- As you code, you deal with the possible exceptions right away (before finishing a class, a even a small method), where they seem likely to happen,
2- or once a big block of code is written (e.g. : an entire class, or even the whole program...) then you deal with the possible exceptions...

Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Tagging Files (Tag Everything)
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:57 PM »
Excellent letter, mouser and Darwin.

And lastly, a note about the differences between Find and Run Robot (FARR) and LaunchBar Commander (LBC).  .....  Personally I use both -- LBC for my more common programs, and then FARR for the less common ones.

:D - just goes to show how different we are, as people. I might wanted to say the exact opposite: FARR for everyday used programs, because those names I can remember, and LBC for the seldom used ones, because these names I most likely have forgotten. Anyway, as it happens I can't remember any names at all ~ I am not a 'keyboard maniac' ~ therefore: Congratulations to mouser on the major update of LauncBar Commander.   :)

This is quite tangential, but what you could do, Curt, is to "tag" any program shortcuts (ie : add extra terms to the shortcut name)... especially those programs you use only once in a while. I've been using this technique for a while and I always find rapidly what I'm looking for, even if I don't remember the exact program name. eg : "Gimp +photo image drawing painting photoshop+.lnk". (these are not the tags I use, but... it should work too.)

General Software Discussion / AJC Active Backup ---- at Bits du Jour
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:24 AM »
Liquidmantis wrote that a while ago :

[...] one I bought some time ago, is AJC Soft's Active Backup.  It monitors specified locations for specified file types and versions them automatically at save time.

Bits du Jour offers AJC Active Backup at $17.40 (instead of $29.00 -- you save 40%...).

2008-10-22.jpg

I still wonder if that kind of increased safety is necessary in my case. Still have 12 hours to decide ;).

Any how... some might want to try it, or buy it.  Liquidmantis seemed to like it. :)

AJC Active Backup
Product Features

  • Compatible with Windows Vista/XP/NT/2000
  • Instantly backs up files as soon as you change them.
  • You choose which directories and file patterns to backup.
  • Protects you from mistakes and software bugs or file corruption by letting you go back to any previous version of a file.
  • Multiple versions of each file are kept so you can undo to any previous version.
  • Once the initial setup wizard has been filled in there is no more effort involved. The system is completely automatic and requires no regular attention.
  • Your backups are always up to date, up to the second. No more restoring to last night's or last week's backup.
  • You can add descriptions to particular file revisions in a backup archive to mark a specific important point in a file's development or a safe point to restore back to, e.g. "Updated copyright section and proof read by JP".
  • The setup wizard makes it very easy to install and trains you as you go along. By the time its setup you know how to use it.
  • Read about the features of the revision control system here.
  • Built in file comparison facility so you can see what has changed. Read about the built in diff features here.
  • Operates silently in the background with very little extra load on your PC.
  • Status bar indicator tells you what the software is doing.
  • Very compact archive size only storing changes to files each time.

Hello, I'm having problems with certain  strings containing diacritics.

1- paste this line in an AHK script.

:oc:ppr1::tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQÀM tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1

2- Run the script

3- type ppr1 in farr's entry box (do trigger the automatic string replacement).

Weird stuff happens.

1- first, only "tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQ" appears in the text box (where it should be : "tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQÀM tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1")

2- second, farr will search and match the first corresponding file with the truncated "tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQ"

3- it will seemingly select it (but don't have the time to see it) and have it appear in the text box AND will append the remaining part that was cut from the original string

So, in the text box I'll end up with something like : MyMSWordFile tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQÀM tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1.doc tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1

... where the first part (MyMSWordFile tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPUQÀM tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1.doc) is the actual file name, and "tgsPCeIn tgsPordr tgsPlogl tgsPpron tgsPPr1" is the second part of the truncated string talked about in point 1.
Why is that ?  :tellme:

 >:(

I'm tired of closing all my apps everytime I want to make a backup with SyncBack SE -- older version, maybe, but still...

I think it used to work in the past. Tried to have it work gain, not able to.

The service is enabled, everything should be okay. WHY are some files still locked ? Is it because I'm using XP Home?  :(

I searched the web and saw that some people have a "shadow copy" tab in the drive properties window. I don't. Should I?

Anyhow... Any help with the VSS service would be appreciated...

General Software Discussion / Mathematics symbols OCR
« on: September 14, 2008, 01:54 PM »
I wonder if anyone knows of software capable of recognizing mathematical symbols... Properly.
The free OCR soft that came with my scanner a while ago certainly can't...  Mostly garbage :)

This would probably be one costly app (judging by the price of top notch OCR software).

But I'm wondering if it exists, and if it performs well.  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Font managers reviews and opinions
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:42 PM »
I've had to play with fonts recently and I realized I was ill equipped...

So started to look for good font managers -- Will be downloading and installing Veign's Cfont Pro and check it out (looks very good BTW ). I used to have Bitstream Font Navigator, a long long long while ago. I was young in these days.

Anyway. I found many rather recent and informative global (even if incomplete) reviews. Here are 2 of them :

http://www.techsuppo...ree-font-manager.htm

http://www.smashingm...ment-tools-reviewed/
fontexpert1.gif

But no reviews are good without some DCers comments and opinions... I know there are a few threads on fonts and realted stuff around here. But it's always fun to ask : what's your take, font experts ? Any all time favorite ?

Living Room / Hard Drive electrical failure... trash it?
« on: September 04, 2008, 06:49 PM »
When I came back from my holidays, I plugged in my external drive. It briefly lit up, then stopped. I thought it was the enclosure, so I bought a SATA/IDE to USB adapter, and... It's dead. Yup. Nothing happens.

So it really seems like something burned in the hardrive external circuits... It smells, well, funny.

Now what? Should I try to bring it back to the store for "recovery"? It's only a backup drive, but I fear there might be something important on it that I forgot about and in a year I'll go : ooooooh noooooo!!!!! It'd be very very surprising though as I'm pretty well organized. It also might be very expensive to recover the data...

I could always keep it in a drawer, just in case...

Anybody with similar experience?

Living Room / Hey, Fonts experts...
« on: September 03, 2008, 10:56 PM »

Looking for a special font. One that'd be similar to this one :

Screenshot - 2008-09-03 , 23_52_27.jpg

Any ideas ? Who knows... Maybe someone here has seen a similar font...

Thanks a lot.

(Am trying to help a friend with a CD launch... Doing the Press Release etc.  :o)

[Edit : that thread's title used to be :  "USBDLM -- deserves a thread!" But I decided to cover change to cover a broader spectrum...]

I discovered USBDLM (USB drive letter manager)

I downloaded this program a while ago because it's been mentioned quite a few times. Never installed it.

Finally tried it yesterday. Wish I did that before! I love it.  :-*

   What it is

USBDLM is a Windows service that gives control over Window's drive letter assignment for USB drives. Running as service makes it independent of the logged on user's privileges, so there is no need to give the users the privilege to change drive letters.
It automatically solves conflicts between USB drives and network or subst drives of the currently logged on user.
Furthermore you can define new default letters for USB drives and much more.

So many times, after using many different USB drives (HDs, USB sticks...), windows gets all mixed up and starts assigning unusual letters to my drive, which makes backuping, errrrrr, an interesting experience.

In some occasions, I had to reboot to be able to restore the letters to their usual drives (yup : sometimes, it's just impossible to reassign letters using "computer management", as you might all know).

And this is where USBDLM does its magic. Assign letters to specific drives (defined either by their size or by Device ID, for example), and bingo. My USB stick is always U:, and all other drives don't steal each other's letters anymore.

You just need to edit an INI file to configure the app. Not as user friendly as some would like, but quite simple in reality.

Try it out if you haven't! It works very well. Free for private use.

What's your favorite USB External Storage Device Manager -- and why?

43
I don't really like chm files. Probably because I'm ill equipped to deal with those -- [edit] can't annotate or bookmark anything [/edit]. Do some of you use/know special readers with light annotating features (eg : bookmarking and highlighting)?

Here's some of what I found on the DC forum about CHM editors and/or readers (not always perfectly related with my problem -- reading, bookmarking, etc, and not necessarily "complete authoring"):

how do you write a .chm file?

A decent CHM viewer for Windows
Help authoring
Help Authoring Gem (cool software, but only chm creator, really... absolutely not a reader... Well, I don't think so)

[edited for more clarity...]

I realized I have some sensitive info there... How do I permanently and completely erase it. Just by erasing the database completely ?  :)

General Software Discussion / Graphics corruption -- Why?
« on: August 24, 2008, 08:20 PM »
Often, after resuming from standby I get that kind of graphics corruption :

- for windows buttons

Screenshot - 2008-08-24 , 21_03_37.jpg

- in firefox, only in certain web pages

Screenshot - 2008-08-24 , 21_04_53.jpg

Refreshing the web page will not clear graphics problems.
As for the garbled windows buttons, I have to reapply my custom theme to get my windows buttons back.

Any ideas of why these graphics problems occur? It's been going on for a while and, unfortunately, I can't really remember when it started.  :-[

I thought it was an interesting read. I was surprised at java's fairly high performance (unless I'm not interpreting the numbers correctly...), especially compared to C++. But... as I'm just starting to get into programming (Java and Python), I'm NOT able to grasp all the implications/applications/limitations of that article (and the method used...).
Any educated comments are welcome.  :)

I want use the "+" symbol in some of my hotstrings "expansions", but... as a "normal", literal character, not as a the usual symbol for "shift". What's the convention for that (eg : RegExp uses "\") ? (Oh, and if there's a web page -- other than the AHK WebSite -- where I can find that info... and other useful info). Thanks a lot!

Developer's Corner / help ! With RegEx
« on: July 04, 2008, 12:06 AM »
OK. I'm ignorant in that matter.

I have a bunch of file names looking like that :

xLC-(2003).Someones,Name.__ The Greatest. Book.In.the World 12345__+tgsPma tgsPorgn+.doc

I'm trying to get rid of the "." inside inside the pairs of "__".

How can I define that area comprised between both "__" (__that area__) so that I don't remove any "." situated outside of these?

PS : With my renamer (Flash Renamer), I tried all kinds of simplistic combinations like :

Find:
(.__)(\w*+\s*)(\.*)(__\+)
And replace with
$1$2$4

.. to match all "." inside the "__"

Obviously, it won't work... I know.
