Living Room / What a wonderful piece of art ...
« on: May 19, 2006, 04:14 PM »
Somebody recently told me that (in his opinion) the object of art was to question, even attack, one's beliefs, points of view etc - that if a piece of art really annoyed you (he referred to something titled "Piss Christ" which, I guess understandably, rather upset some people) then it had succeeded.
This forum is a work of art!
Have a good weekend all.

Living Room / Re: Skype users: beware

Yep, probably wasn't a good idea to start a grammar discussion as I'm sure there's somebody out there who will dissect my posts and explain how awfully written they are - bring it on!
I totally agree with you about initially informing Skype of this problem. Maybe they did?
I visited Skype's website and could find no mention of problems or that document.

Living Room / Thanks ...

Thanks to all of you.
This forum has entertained and amused me - most I've laughed all day!
I think I love listening to people arguing!
I think you need to turn this around and ask people what they suggest.
Of course it's illegal ... but would you be happier if all of those many faulty products (and we're not just talking about software) were never highlighted and made to be fixed?
What about the bigger picture?
I'm sure the "outing" of corrupt politicians, companies, etc is probably done in a rather questionable manner but would you prefer if they were never brought to light?
Most products (especially physical products e.g. cars, fridges, tvs, etc etc etc) are reverse-engineered by the competition to see how it works so that they can then make a better product without a lot of the development cost. Of course it's illegal but everybody does it and it's become "accepted".
Beware the government which makes it illegal to question what they're doing. Something the UK Labour government have been trying to do in some absurd situations in the name of anti-terrorism.
Why should software companies be able to do this?
Anyway, back to the real point of this forum, enlightening us all ... does anybody know if Skype are doing something about this? Should I stop using Skype (for the time being)?
Nick
PS  This one really bugs me - it's "you're" - it means "you are" - "your" refers to possession as in "your views are questionable" which is different to "you're talking rubbish" - get it?

brotherS,
Maybe NOD32 does interfere with P2P programs ... but I'm not using any.
I contacted them about this and they asked me to re-install it in SAFE MODE and then run a full scan.
I did that, ran the scan which took over an hour, no problems.
I left NOD32 installed but within a day the processor slow-downs were getting irritatingly noticeable so it's gone again.
Shame, as it's meant to perform it's virus-scanning very well.

I'm impressed.

Carol! How long ago did you do it that you've already forgotten which program you used!?!
Having written that, I can't remember what I did this morning, I have to write little notes so that I don't forget all the things I need to do.
How's the blog/forum going!?!

7
Mouser,
I downloaded 2 files
 - star_wreck_in_the_pirkinning_subtitled_xvid.avi - 554,257 kb
 - XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe - 621 kb

I ran the Xvid software.
I then tried watching the movie with WinDVD6 and Windows Media Player but it looks like it's got a funny negative colour filter on it and is super-fine grainy - if that makes sense!

Carol,
What did you use to trans-code the movie onto DVD?

I've never used forums before - very time-consuming ... but (as BT used to say) it's nice to talk!

Nick

8
Morning All,
(Well, it is where I am).
I downloaded the Star Wreck movie and the xVid driver.
But when I play the movie it's super-grainy.
Is there something else I need to do or a specific player I need to watch it with?
Thanks for the help,
Nick

Mouser and Carol,
Drupal looks VERY nice.
I can't figure out what's in it for them to give away this beautiful product - any ideas?
It's PHP based so unless you want 2 servers that will dictate your programming language ... if you're going to do any programming!
I'll be looking into this ... now what kind of site should I set up, hmmm.
Later,
Nick

Carol,

I'm inclined to advise you to take the easiest route  i.e. let other do the hard work and just use their tools.

If you insist on writing code then I can't really advise as to which you should use as I've only used ASP & VBScript.

Mouser has obviously done PHP which a lot of people rave about.
For PHP development I haven't got a clue - I'm sure there are free development kits out there (please tell me because I need to know) but I don't know where they are.

To develope ASP at home you'll need Windows XP Pro with IIS installed and a text editor - yes, you could use a fancy editing tool (e.g. Dreamweaver) but a text editor will get you started - I use jEdit which is a fancy freeware editor from www.jedit.org - but there are loads of editors out there.
And if you want a content-driven site then you're going to have to opt for XML or a database ... or both - Microsoft Access will do to start with.
I suggest taking some demo code and making light changes to see the effect.
It's very gratifying seeing the results of your first script - and the beauty of database-driven (and something which people don't always understand) is that once you've written the code it will work with 2 entries or 200.

Have a play with all 4 options
 - WIKI, Forum, etc
 - Site Builder (your domain may have a free one)
 - PHP
 - ASP
and decide which works best for you.

All the best and good luck,

Nick

Mouser,

Jeez, when do you get any work done, are you monitoring EVERY forum!

I didn't really look at the page text properly, yes, I assumed they were credit card buttons.
Don't worry about it if I'm the only one who's experience the problem.

By the way, I want to include PayPal into my online store which is based in Spain so the text has to be in Spanish but I don't yet speak Spanish. I noticed that the only way I could get the PayPal screen to be in Spanish was to change the PayPal admin screens to Spanish. The admin option indicates that you're changing the admin screen language but it also changes the front-end language. I contacted PayPal about this but they weren't that helpful. Am I doing something wrong? Do you know of any way of setting the admin screens and the front-end screens to different languages?

Thanks for your help ... and don't forget about the PHP books, sites, etc advice!

Shangnyun,
What do you use to put those nice (shadowed) ellipses on images?

Carol,
For anything other than a standard static "here are my holiday" pictures site, going down the content-driven is definitely the best thing to do.
I think it's a toss-up between development and content
 - being a programmer I prefer the development of the code which will drive the site and it's features than I do the entering of the content
 - but without any content it's going to be a pretty boring site!
I'm currently working solo on an online catalogue and also an online shop and the above is definitely the case so I find myself concentrating on the wrong things  i.e.  code.
Have you decided which language you are going to use for the back-end code?
Or maybe you could just go down the site-builder route - definitely a lot quicker though less freedom.
Ok, got to get on. Have a good evening,
Nick

Carol,

Thanks for the mails.

Donation now made.
hadn't looked at the click-buttons properly, I thought they were credit card buttons, once I'd clicked through I found the PayPal and Amazon buttons.
How silly do I feel? Don't answer that.

Slow process - I had decided (at about the same time that I got a mail from Mouser) that it was something to do with the NOD32 (virus) scanner. I've now uninstalled NOD32 and re-booted the PC and it's been running fine (no 100% CPU use) for the last 20 minutes.

Thanks,

Nick

PS   Now stop reading these forum messages and get those websites finished!

Mouser,
I've now uninstalled and re-booted the PC.
It's been running for about 20 minutes with no slow-downs or 100% CPU use.
So I guess it was something to do with NOD32.
Thanks,
Nick

Mouser,
This is rather cheeky of me but I noticed the word PHP in your post.
I might have to do some PHP coding in 2006.
Could you recommend any good books, sites, etc which would helpful.
Thanks,
Nick

18
Mouser,
Thanks for the reply.
I have already been thinking that NOD32 is the culprit as this is a recent phenomenon which coincided with the installation of NOD32!
I haven't got time to try working out which driver may be causing the problem so I think I might completely uninstall NOD32 and see if that improves things.
And maybe I should drop them a line to see if they can offer any advice.
Thanks,
Nick

Excellent. Made me laugh. Thanks for that.

Living Room / Windows XP - system process - high CPU use - any ideas?
« on: October 19, 2005, 09:04 AM »
HELP!
I've just downloaded Process Tamer in the hope that it might help to tame or explain the high CPU use of the system process on my system - it should run at about 0 or 1 percent but it's regularly (every few minutes) running up to +90% ... which is ridiculous and causes constant system slowdowns.
Note: I'm not referring to the system idle process - this is a separate process which has the name system and which is detailed on various websites as a virus-free Windows counter process.
Rather oddly, Process Tamer doesn't even show the system process but WinTask 5 and the old faithful Windows Task Manager do.
Constantly worrying about viruses, trojans, etc, I've run various versions of the latest virus checkers (Norton, AVG, NOD32, etc) but they all report no viruses, trojans, etc.
Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Nick

Carol,
Bizarre, when I clicked on the donations page it just showed me credit card options!
Thanks for that.
Now if I can just get an answer to the system process cpu loading I'll be happy (or happier than I am right now!).

To all/anybody at DonationCoder.com,

Thanks for the Process Tamer.
May I ask a question? I'm using Windows XP SP2. The "system" process (not system idle) regularly ramps up to +90% CPU usage. I've run multiple virus checks which have found nothing. Any ideas?

I am more than happy to make a donation but I prefer to use PayPal for all of my online transaction - add PayPal and I'll make a donation.

All the best,

Nick
