http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4210870/adam-orth-leaves-microsoft

Adam Orth, the Microsoft Studios creative director who came under fire for controversial comments on "always-on" consoles, has left the company. The news was first reported by Game Informer, and Polygon has independently confirmed his departure with two sources. It's unclear, however, whether Orth was fired or left his position voluntarily...

An extremely well attended talk by Hugo Teso, a security consultant at n.runs AG in Germany, about the completely realistic scenario of plane hijacking via a simple Android app has galvanized the crowd attending the Hack In The Box Conference in Amsterdam today.

This was welcome news. It's extremely onerous scrolling through hundreds of crap-apps to find something halfway decent to install on my android tablet.

Living Room / Crowdscribed.com
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:54 PM »
I found the following article interesting, given the number of posts over the last few months about book-publishing, eBooks, the pricing-models of B&N, Amazon, etc. The website that the previous link discusses is here.

crowdScribed.png

When American publishers in the 1820s turned down the opportunity to publish his water colors, John James Audubon raised the equivalent of $2 million from subscriptions, art sales, lectures and even the sale of furs to publish his celebrated Birds of America. If crowd funding was good enough for Audubon, it’s definitely good enough for us.

...The word on the interwebs today is that this 1999 Angelfire page belongs to one Mark Zuckerberg. Yes, that Mark Zuckerberg, which means this could be the very first website that the hoody that made Facebook ever created. If true, it's a time machine into the 15-year-old brain of the most powerful man on the Internet...

Living Room / Advice needed re: locking windows kernel in RAM
« on: March 18, 2013, 03:50 PM »
Someone emailed me this, supposedly from a PC-Mag article issued months ago:

Windows willingly swaps its own code from memory to make room for your other programs. But since Windows code is the most often used when you run your system, swapping it can slow things down. You can save swap time by making Windows lock its own kernel in RAM, as long as you have enough memory (512MB).

Note that the Registry controls all swapping of the kernel, and any erroneous alteration in the Registry can make your PC inoperable. Use the program Regedit (usually found in your Windows or WinNT folder). Click on My Computer | Local Disk (C:) | Windows | Regedit.

Expand the listings to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management in the left-hand half of the window. Highlight DisablePagingExecutive on the right-hand side. Then click on Edit | Modify and enter the value 1. Click on OK, close Regedit, and reboot your computer.

Safe/unsafe? Advisable/Inadvisable?

After all these years, my 2.5 GB Seagate pocket drive still works perfectly. I use it regularly, just to appreciate how fast my USB 2.0 devices are, in comparison  ;D

Just scanned it: no bad sectors, no file system errors...

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / N.A.N.Y. 2013 Pledge & Release: 2x2 List Sorter
« on: December 04, 2012, 08:52 PM »
If you've ever seen a woman try on a dozen different dresses in a store, and then say, "I like this one better than that one, but I really like this other one better....", you'll understand the need for the 2x2 List Sorter. Same thing if you've ever presented a kid with 31 different ice-cream flavor choices at a Baskin Robins. It can be hard to get all your preferences sorted out, when you have to look at all the options at the same time. Along comes the 2x2 List Sorter to the rescue. Just feed it a text file of related choices (dress colors, fruit types, ice cream flavors), and the program will then help you step-by-step to figure out your most to least favorite.

Offers option to export the finished sort to text file.

The minimum number of button clicks required to achieve a sorted list is n-1,
and the maximum possibly required clicks is (n_squared / 2) - (n / 2), where n
is the number of items in the list.

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / NANY 2013 Pledge & Release: KyrTTS
« on: November 17, 2012, 08:03 PM »
I'm hoping to find time to program a more extensive, polished app; but I'm hedging my bets by releasing this small portable program (no .NET runtimes; it can be run from a thumb-drive if desired):

KyrTTS is Kyrathaba's Text-To-Speech application. If you have Microsoft SAPI installed, this program can be used to convert English text (contained in a text file) into WAV audio.

Here is the download link for the non-UPX-compressed application in a zipped file (333 Kb download, 626 Kb extracted).

And here is a download link for a UPX-compressed version of the program (281 Kb download, 286 Kb extracted).

Living Room / fast infrared coming?
« on: October 03, 2012, 07:22 AM »
Besides TV remotes, the technology was last seen on devices like Palm Pilots facilitating the wireless transfer of contact info. But researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS in Dresden have rebuilt infrared—making it better, stronger, and most importantly, faster. It now boasts transfer speeds of one gigabit per second, making it 46 times faster than "convential Wi-Fi" as the researchers claim, and over 1,400 times faster than Bluetooth. The hardware, which relies on laser emitters and receivers no larger than a kid's fingernail, could be easily installed in smartphones so that sharing a large HD-res video could take mere seconds.

Living Room / Is my pen-drive performing okay?
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:34 PM »
I have a 16 Gb Sandisk Cruzer pen-drive, on which I have a suite of portable apps, plus many docs I use at my place of work.

I'm just wondering if the following benchmarking results I got are decent. I know it's not gonna perform like a USB 3.0 device, because it ain't (it's 2.0).

This is a complete C# project demonstrating the algorithm to determine which squares among many are in proximity to one another. Download the zipped archive and extract it to your Visual Studio projects directory. Or, if you have .NET 4.0 installed and simply want to observe the program in action, extract the executable from the /bin/ folder and run it.

Kyrathaba Software / Kyrathasoft C# Screen Capture Demo Project
« on: January 21, 2012, 09:10 AM »
This is simply a small executable demonstrating the capturing of the primary screen in a screenshot, using C#. This isn't a setup program. It's just the plain executable of the program. You'll need to have .NET 4.0 installed to run this program. It permits the user to export the source code that allows the primary screen to be captured.

Application Name N.A.N.Y. Excuse Manager
Version
The most recent version is 0.96q
Short Description Manage your excuses for not producing a N.A.N.Y. application
Supported OSes WinXP, Vista, 7
Download LinkExcuse Manager (zipped) (75.5 Kb) will not check for presence of .NET Framework 4.0
Download LinkExcuse Manager Inno Setup (409 Kb) will check for presence of .NET Framework 4.0
Download Link Although I'm not releasing the entire project source code, here is a download link for the Excuse class  :P
The Big Picture

The program is intended to be used not only by end-users, but also by the developer.  End-users create/edit/email their excuses.  The developer programmatically retrieves Excuse files and downloads these email attachments, where the developer's copy of the program processes them and creates HTML reports of the data, publishing it online for the edification of all program users.

Important Note: Although not yet implemented as of v0.96q, which was my final submission before the contest ended, I do have test-code written and will be implementing functionality wherein the program takes the processed Excuses that it receives by email, collates the processed data into a nice HTML file, uploads it to my website, an then emails users of the program the link to the online report.

Webcast InfoThe following screencasts should be viewed in the order listed, beginning with "Installing the Program"
Webcastinstalling the program
Webcastrunning the program for the first time
Webcastsending excuse files via email
Webcastretrieving excuse files via email
Version HistoryVersion 0.9 (released 12-24-2010)
  • basic creation and editing of excuses
  • serialization of excuses
  • ability to browse for subdirectory of choice for storing excuses
Version 0.91 (released 12-24-2010)
  • fixed three bugs
  • added ability to email excuses to developer
  • added notification, to form Title Bar, of number of excuses found in selected directory
Version 0.92 (released 12-25-2010)
  • added splash screen
  • added menu option to show splash screen infrequently (you're welcome)
Version 0.93 (released 12-25-2010)
  • added the excellent icon by App103 (thank you!)
  • added menu options to vary splash screen duration
Version 0.94 (released 12-26-2010) -- the code to download multiple emails from multiple DC users was quite involved
  • removed unused using statements from source code files
  • added error-checking to method querying DC username before emailing the developer with copies of your excuse files
  • added the ability for the developer to retrieve (after supplying a password) all excuse files that have been emailed to him as attachments
  • added convenient keyboard shortcut: Escape key exits application
Version 0.95 (released 12-27-2010)
  • placed code that retrieves and processes multiple emails in its own BackgroundWorker thread, so as not to destabilize the UI
  • modified InnoSetup so that it uses the correct icon, such that the icon displays prettily (with transparency in the right places) in the Desktop shortcut (see screenshot below)
Version 0.96 (released 12-30-2010)
  • corrected error of omission: program will NOW update title bar with # excuses found, just as soon as you select a directory using Folder button and the BrowseForDirectory dialog.
  • added a mutex synchronization primitive to guard against multiple instances of our program running simultaneously.
  • renamed some #regions and some variable names, to improve source code clarity
  • commented the code more significantly
  • implemented a FileSystemWatcher object, with related event handlers, so that even if a file gets added or deleted (or even changed) from outside our program (say, from Windows Explorer, for instance), our program's UI reflects this and/or alerts us appropriately
  • made the form slightly taller, so that the text boxes could be multiline.
  • used a boolean in conjunction with Form1_Activated() to ensure description textbox gets focus when program first loads.
  • added option to view, via Windows Explorer, the contents of the application data folder
  • added menu item to allow developer to process downloaded excuse files.  Uses a second BackgroundWorker object -- again, to keep UI from freezing.
  • the biggest feature of 0.96 over 0.95 is the addition of the ability to process retrieved emails' attachments and generate a report.  Unfortunately for most end-users, other than the developer, this feature won't be accessible.
  • used an obfuscating routine to better protect a password included in the installation.

Description
The purpose of this little program is to allow you to record the many excuses you've come up with for why you're not writing a N.A.N.Y. entry.  Of course, I've written the program to be able to handle excuses for just about anything, but its intent is as stated above.

Features

See the Version History information above.

Planned Features

I welcome your suggestions.

One idea I had was to have the program check my website for uploaded excuses, and launch the user's default browser to view them.  Perhaps the program would download a local copy and allow the user to vote for their favorites, then email the developer these ratings for later inclusion in the webpage...

Usage
Installation
How do you install and run the Application for the first time?

Use either of the two links above that you wish.  You can either install manually, which merely involves extracting the zipped folder and its contents to your desired location, then running the app.  Or, you can download and run the Inno Setup file and run it.

Using the Application

See the "About" menu for brief instructions.

Uninstallation

Either delete the manually extracted folder, which contains the applications and its files; or, run the uninstaller from your Program Files menu.

Known Issues

You tell me.  Seems to be working well.
