:D BortherS, Glad you liked it.

The whole mind mapping/note taking started me thinking about what I really want out of this type of software.
I think I want topic association vs. categories.  The difference is subtle.

To me categories are centered around database thinking and the need to make binary (true/false) relationships between an item and a category.  While I understand this need, my brain tends to assocate items with a topic (category) on a graduated scale.  I'm not sure how you develop an interface that let's you do that easily.

Some of the super searchers may do that based on content.  Google does it to some degree with it's engine.  Google for complete failure and several articles about Pres. G. W. Bush show up.  (No comments please)  The reason is that there are a lot of articles written about Pres. Bush and some of them call him and or his efforts a complete failure. (Again, please do not comment on this; not a political discussion forum) Once these articles are indexed by Google and start getting hits, they go up in rank on the results page.

Just adding to the confusion discussion here.
Freemind is a mind mapping/note taking application. http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/
I think the concept deserves consideration if only for understanding how to think about designing UI's.  What we really want is an application that works the way we think.  I'm not saying these guys have nailed it, but I think they started with a good perspective.  ;)

FDA Is Urged to Ban Carbon-Monoxide-Treated Meat
"Picture two steaks on a grocer's shelf, each hermetically sealed in clear plastic wrap. One is bright pink, rimmed with a crescent of pearly white fat. The other is brown, its fat the color of a smoker's teeth.

Which do you reach for?

OK, they pretty up the meat.  So?  The CO does nothing to harm the meat or the humans that eat it.  It just makes it look better.  They are trying to make it more attractive so they don't have to discount/discard "dingy" looking meat.  It is still fresh and safe, it just looks unattractive.

Martha Stewart will tell you to squit lemon juice over you freshly sliced apples to keep them looking nice.  It's the same thing.

Hirudin, so you're a fellow java hater also?  I'm not a programmer or anything, but why do java applications suck so much?  I don't know why, but they just do.
Hmm... must be that they're written in Java!!!
My issue is that it trys to be everything to everyone and is so complicated to develop with and distribute, that it ends up being fairly worthless.

Your mileage may vary. ;)

Aha!  How about this?

at 23:28 "%systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe /c k:\status\test.bat"

The at command schedules commands.  See cmd /? for the explaination of /c.  Be aware that each command runs in its own environment so you need to fully path the cmd.exe and the command that you want to run.  See at /? for details on scheduling the commands.

The test I ran worked without anything showing on my screen.  No focus change, etc.

Detach under OS/2 would have been easier   ;D

Cody can provide counselling if required ...

Alternatively drinking can distract you long enough to go cold-turkey.

Carol, I think I love you  :-*

It's your little bits of humor (and the twirling girl skater) that just do it for me  ;)

@allen - I love your sig line.  I get a kick out of reading the bits of trivia.  I think it's like a contest to see which ones I already knew.  Stuff like 2x4 is realy 1.5 x 3.5 I know.

I also enjoy coming up with equally factual tidbits when possible.  For example, the one I'm seeing now (not sure if they change) is: "Go is the shortest comlete sentence in the English language"  While I agree, I contend that it shares it's title with "Hi" -- also the shortest complete sentence.   ;)

Peace ...  :D

I was ready to give you the quick intro to the detach command.  Then I remembered, it's an OS/2 thing.

You can run a cmd.exe window minimized with no output, but that's not quite the same.

Once again, if OS/2 ruled the world, things would be better  ..  ;)

I said that backwards by the way... ESX runs on the hardware... GSX run inside and OS.

« on: February 13, 2006, 06:00 PM »
VMWare Server & VMWare Workstation 5 are not the same.  Basically the (now) free VMWare Server is the former VMWare ESX.  It requires a Host Operating System to run; GSX does not, it runs on the Raw Hardware.

See their site for full details.  http://www.vmware.com/

While I appreciate the information, I'm not sure what to do with it anymore.

Way back in the 1970's we learned about Red Dye #2 and all of it's cancer causing effects.  Prodcuts disappeared off of the shelves to be destroyed.  Red M&M's were MIA for many years.  Suddenly saccharine and 1/2 the worlds products (slight exaggeration) were found to cause cancer... at least in rats.

"Latest breaking news: Gov't reports on cancer causing agents found to cause cancer."

A few years ago I heard that most of the hype around red dye #2 and saccharine was bogus.  Turns out that the rats used in the dye #2 test were prone to cancer anyway, so the test didn't prove anything.  It's been rumored for years that Nutrasweet was more dangerous in other ways than saccharine ever dreamed of being.  It was interesting to see how fast this new "wonder product" made it thru FDA testing... almost like it was ready to go before the saccharine downfall.  (What exactly is nutritional about this stuff?  I think the name is way misleading too).

Anyway, with all of this seeming mis-information, we add MSG to the mix as the nicotine for food.  What can I eat anymore?

Everyone who produces one of these reports has an agenda.  Who is behind this one?

Again, thanks for sharing; I just don't know who to listen to anymore.
