Hi Hornet,

I mentioned Info Select in this discussion a while ago.  (The thread is so crazy long I'm sure you didn't read it all)  I have not seen the program in 10 years or so. Are you using the Text based version or did they modernize it some?

Also, how fast can you add a note and/or search for one?  When I saw it used, it was fucntion key based and stupid fast for those who used it often.

Welcome to the site.

Great fun.

I will probably end up with Office 2k7 on my system at some point.  It'll be free so what the heck.

Wow that's a weird game.  Kinda cool.  Pretty challenging.  Not sure of the final objective other than survive. :)

I believe this is exactly what you were looking for in the original post.

http://home25.inet.tele.dk/bramsing/

I installed it and it seems to work fine.  It's a system tray indicator or Caps, Num and Scroll Lock keys.

Enjoy!

  Nicely done.

258
How about this:  Cody has to save Allen from his evil twin cousin.  Coins should be there somewhere... Maybe Allen could throw out Keywords to help Cody.  If, Else, .New, etc.   :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Word Search Solver

D'oh!  Sorry.  I read your first post but somehow failed to read the very nice description of the app.  Brain damage I guess.

So this is pretty easy from a cross platform point of view.  Just about any language (except C or C++) has decent enough string processing to do what you want.  For the Ultimate in cross platform look at something like REXX or Perl.  If you want to compile it you could use Free Pascal.  If you want to learn a trendy Web oriented language you could use Python or Ruby.

The biggest problem you'll face with something like Java, is wading your way through the various versions of Java and the many possible JVM's.  Jave is not my favorite  :P

Pascal was supposed to be the next logical step for BASIC programmers.  Of course that was in the 80's :)

Have fun.  No matter what you choose, it should be fun.

What type of app is it?  That might help determine the best language/approach...

Hey Della,

Congrats on your first game.  I started to look at it but didn't get a chance to play.

Which leads to my comment on the game maker:  It's a little rude.  It switch my display to 640x480 or something; messed up my windows and kill my ATI TV picture.

Please don't take that as a hit on you or your game... I blame the game making kit.  ;)

Good luck on your next adventure.

alex3f - How does a social web site differ from the crowd mentality?  I think you nailed the "reasoning" behind the crowd actions (or thinking) but I fail to see how a site like digg really differs.

They still get "caught up" in the moment and stop thinking.... a lot like most 14-18 year olds :)

265
Sorry for not reading all the way through... has anyone offered this reason?

Software is copied because it's easy.  Free serial number and hack sites abound.

Why do they crack it?  It's a challenge... they want to be cool...

Does it make sense to the rest of us?  :-\

266
@mouser: agreed
All of the cool RAD stuff you do in C++Builder and Delphi is still described using regular text based OOP.

Text is a dead-end

Programming is stuck in an evolutionary dead-end: the use of character strings to encode programs. Every other computer-mediated form of expression has evolved beyond text into sophisticated WYSIWYG interfaces to complex data structures. For example, no one still uses textual markup for word processing (except, notably, Computer Scientists with TeX). We need WYSIWYG programming.

I think these guys might be smoking crack.

Their unsupported assertion is that the perfect way to write programs is through a visual interface.  A psudo point-and-click or drag-and-drop answer.

Programming deals with a lot of abstract stuff.  I'm not sure that the best way logic flows can be described is visually.

Developer's Corner / Re: Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby
« on: June 25, 2006, 02:01 PM »
I have looked at Why's ruby book a couple of different times.  This is the first time I've actually looked at his blog.  This guy is whack-o beyond compare.

Either the things he writes make some weird sense to him (most frightening) or he makes stuff up just to see how many people will actually read it.  In either case, his brain is crosswired somewhere.

I don't think he's dangerous or scary, he's more like Willie Wonka nuts.

He'll probably invent cold fusion and save the world....

270
sweet!  I haven't actually had this problem yet, but as I've just started using Opera, I'm sure I would've soon.  Gmail is one of my startup tabs :)

Things like this do really happen.  We have a cell phone for our son and the first couple of months he had it he call calls from the bank, the old users mom, andsome old lady who kept calling.l

I thought there was  a 1 year cool off period for regular phone #'s,  I guess it doesn't exists for cell phones....

Living Room / Re: CPU 100%
« on: June 24, 2006, 11:53 AM »
RAM may not be the issue.  You can see how much is in use by running taskmanager and looking at the performance tab.  By the yellow > in the pic below is your current RAM usage.  If that is more than you physically have availble, the system will use disk to swap.  THAT can increase the CPU load, but shouldn't run it at 100%.

I recently started having problems with FF 1.5.0.4 running my CPU @ 50%, so the combination may be getting you.  The easy fix is to try using Opera or IE to see if that drops your normal CPU load.
